1 | Not my will, but Yours be done... | Luke 22:42 | jg8ball | 70658
Joe, I would interpret this passage in the following manner: Jesus was still human at the time. It's not a sin or even a question of a conflict of wills to ask the Father for something to be done if it's within His will to do so. Jesus wasn't saying He wouldn't do it. He was saying something more like "Father, this frail body I'm in can't take much more of this and if there's any other way to achieve your plan, I'm listening. But you know I'll do whatever you desire of me." (again this is my interpretation) The statement I would make is that Jesus felt the pain and anguish of the world. He probably also knew that His death wasn't going to save everyone because there would still be some that would not choose Jesus even after all He had done. Maybe he was asking for more time to convince the people to accept Him. I don't know if anyone else would agree with me, but that's what I get out of it. Also, the verse says that His sweat was like drops of blood (not actually drops of blood). I would interpret this to mean the sweat drops were large drops falling to the ground similar to someone that just finished a marathon race or eating some really spicy food. --John |

3 | Question not answered..... any help? | Mark 16:16 | jg8ball | 39966
Luke, Forget the Bible for now. You can't use the bible to prove itself. Look more to the people that have truely accepted Christ as their savior and see the changes in their lives. Look at the joy and the peace they have. This is not to say that everything will be happy in your life or that you will get whatever you desire. In the hard times - you will have the peace of knowing that you're not alone. Jesus will be there with you. In the good times, Jesus will still be there with you and you'll want to tell everyone you know what He has done for you. One (of many) examples of what God has done for me in my life is: Several years ago now, I was depressed (thinking about suicide). I had accepted Christ several years prior to that but fell away and put Him to that back of my mind. Granted, He was there, but I didn't let Him out much. One evening on my way home to my empty apartment, I was feeling depressed again and just began praying to God to send someone into my life. Tears became streaming down my face (which is not like me at all). I literally cried out for His help. I didn't tell anyone about this or what was going on in my life. Very soon afterwards, a friend from work asked me if I'd be interested in going on a blind date with his wife's friend from church. I said sure and 11 months later we were married. It's now been 8 years and we have a son. Not only did God bring someone to me, He brought Himself. My life has been getting better everyday. And even though we're currently having financial problems due to the poor economy, I trust that God will help us through it. It's hard to put into words and it is a leap of faith but for me - it was (and is) well worth it. And back to the bible. It may only seem like a another book to you, but to me it makes more and more sense everytime I read from it. The Bible is a tool to help you on your journey with Christ. |

4 | Stay marriaed at all costs? | 1 Cor 7:15 | jg8ball | 38861
I think God would not object to you leaving your husband in this circumstance. If you have tried all that you can and the abuse still continues, then what good can come from staying together. If you were both non-believers when married and you became a believer, you are now a new person (in Christ) and if you are unable to resolve the brutality, then you have no option to leave to situation less you fall victom. If you were a believer and he was not when married, (even though Paul warned against this), I can't believe that our God of Love would want you to remain in this situation if all attempts (including seeking help from others) has failed. If you both thought you were believers when married, then I think you were deceived. How could a true believer in Christ act the way you describe? I hope your example was hypothetical but if not, I pray that God gives you the courage to do what He would have you do. |

5 | The greatest in the kingdom? | Luke 7:28 | jg8ball | 38371
I would interpret it as people that would later be in the Kingdom of God. The least would be greater than John because they would have the opportunity to receive God's grace through Jesus. Unfortunately, John (the baptist) died before the death and ressurection of Jesus.
6 | what are women to do without a husband? | Bible general Archive 1 | jg8ball | 38366
Get a husband. (just kidding) Biblically, I would recommend talking to other women and asking them for guidance. Today's world (assuming you live in the U.S. or other modern countries) I think you would be able to talk to any friend versed in the Bible. If you're not comfortable with that, there is always sites like this you can post your questions. Please make sure though that you back up what you hear by examining what the Bible has to say for yourself. |

7 | How should I interpret this passage? | Mark 10:14 | jg8ball | 38363
Doesn't the next verse answer it? Mark 10:15 "Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all." |

8 | Passover the first of Unleavened Bread? | Matt 26:17 | jg8ball | 32205
To confuse things a little more, I've been told (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that to be considered a day back then it had to be during sunlight. If something happend in the evening (after dark) that it would have been considered to have happened the next day. In other words, the Passover ocurred after dusk and the next day started the feast but it's still only one day.
9 | Is the word 'twilight' confusing? | Matt 26:17 | jg8ball | 32202
Twilight is defined as the point in time when the sun drops below the horizon (sunset) which generally occurs much before midnight. I don't see any way this passage could be confused as to the day. To estimate the hour though, that would depende where in the world you were at. Twilight arrives on the east coast of the US approx 3 hours before the west coast (although it's still the same time relative to the people living on each coast)

11 | Moses killed why was he still choosen to | Bible general Archive 1 | jg8ball | 31186
1) Moses killed an Egyptian that was beating (possibly to death) a Hebrew. 2) There have been many cases where God chose to use people of what we might perceive as "questionable behavior". This just goes to show that no matter what you may have done in the past, it's not too late for God to bail you out and help you get back on track. |

12 | Covenant to Abraham revoked? | Gen 17:7 | jg8ball | 1653
I don't remember the bible talking about canceling the old covenant in favor of the new. I've always interpreted as the new covenant grafted the gentiles onto the old covenant so that all would be included in God's plan. There are many verses that mention Jews and Gentiles... I don't recall anything implying any sort of cancellation. I was always told that contracts could be broken but not God's covenants (of course this could be oppinion). If you know of any verses that people use to state otherwise, I'd be curious to see them.
13 | 'Separation' and 'Experience?' | Mark 15:34 | jg8ball | 1649
Sorry, I thought this was a top level question and didn't scroll down to see that it was part of several postings. I also see that part of my answer included the verse that started this thread so I assume you don't believe that it refers to the separation (if there was one). I guess it's time for bed or a big cup of coffee :) Oh well, I hope the experience part of my answer helps you - it doesn't me. |

14 | 'Separation' and 'Experience?' | Mark 15:34 | jg8ball | 1644
The way I've heard the separation explained is the Mark 15:34 passage: And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? The term forsaken could imply different meanings but one interpretation is that God "severed the link" for moment so that Jesus would be fully able to die for our sins. As far as the "experiencing Hell" part, I think you might be refering to Eph 4:8-10 - This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions ? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) I've heard this verse used to describe that Jesus went to "an area of Hell" that was more of a waiting place for those God favored (Moses, Abe, Josh, Noah, etc...) Jesus freed them from this area and opened the door to Heaven for them and those that believe. As far as if this would be the way I would interpret them, I can't say. I'd have to do a whole lot more studying before I could say one way or the other. There may be other verses that are used to support these ideas but these are the ones that came to mind. |

15 | Jesus and Jehovah-same subject? | John 1:1 | jg8ball | 1611
Thanks again. He believes that Jesus is the Son of God, not God. He can't comprehend how the two can be the same. I've shown him Heb 1:8-12 and he admits that he has no answer for it and will ask his elders (which could get him into much trouble) I'm currently showing him the many verses that tell us that we are to worhship only God and verses that talk about worshiping Jesus. This too has him thinking a little more. Not sold yet, but at least thinking on his own (instead of through the watchtower) He admits that the JW's have been wrong before but points to the many errors other denominations have made like the spanish inquisitions. |

17 | What abt Rom 8 and 1 Jn 2? | Hebrews | jg8ball | 1228
Ok, maybe "really easy" was not the best possible words to use. I was thinking about the exodus from Egypt when it appeared really easy for the Hebrews to forget what God had done for them. The really easy kind of stuck in my mind. If it would make you happy, then I'll change it to "possible". I've already stated my views on the other verses and won't bother you with them again - unless of course you'd again like to see that there is another possible (really easy) interpretation. Also, (and I'm not calling YOU a Calvinist but am using the term to define a group of people that lean more to the general Calvin beliefs) there was another thread which stated that Calvinists believe that children are lost as opposed to the Arminian belief that children are saved. Do you know if this is true? And is this also your belief? |

18 | Did Solomon and Sheba have a child? | Bible general Archive 1 | jg8ball | 1205
Good question. I saw the same show and just took for granted they had a son -- my bad. I just did a bunch of searching and could not find anything stating that they had a son. The closest I found that could be remotely interpreted that way was 2 Chronicles 9:12 "King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for; he gave her more than she had brought to him." although I don't think I would interpret it that way. The host may have researched documents about the Queen of Sheba which may have implied that. I don't know. I just did a search at www.google.com on "queen of sheba" solomon son and found many sites that talk about their son. Whether it's true or not is for you to decide. Good luck. |

19 | When are we 'securely' saved? | Hebrews | jg8ball | 1199
We are "securely" saved when we enter Heaven. Although I can safely say that I am saved now and can't imagine that changing, I don't know my future. |

20 | Is there an age of accountability? | Bible general Archive 1 | jg8ball | 1198
As far as an actual age, the Bible doesn't specify, and I believe rightly so. Each child is different and "understands" at a different age. To say that there is a certain age (ie: 8 years 3 months) that a child would no longer be saved would make no sense. I believe (based on our God be a loving God) that He would not send any child, that is unable to understand what it means to be saved, to Hell. I also believe this holds true for adults that are mentally unable to comprehend this for themselves. Your statement about Calvins beliving that children are lost is a suprise to me. I can't believe how someone could interpret that let alone belive that. The closest scriptual basis I could find is the following: Matt 18:2-4 "He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." |
