1 | Why was Cain's offering not acceptable? | Gen 4:5 | jawz | 48131
Abel offered God the "firstfruits" of his labour, while Cain did not. Abel offered the best he could and Cain kept the best for himself.
2 | How is comunion only symbolic? | 1 Cor 10:16 | jawz | 48125
It is not symbolic. Everytime we have communion, the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross is "made present". It is not a repeat of the sacrifice, it is that very same sacrifice. That is how the disciples could take part in the body and blood of Christ before his crucifixion. God is outside of time, since time itself is merely a part of his creation. The early Church always understood the bread and wine to be the literal body and blood of Christ. Justin Martyr wrote as much in his First Apology around the middle of the second century. Ignatius in his letter to the Smyrnaeans around the end of the first century (or the beginning of the 2nd) says the same and Irenaeus (towards the end of the 2nd century) writes much on this subject. They are just a few of the earlier writings we have from the church.
3 | I KNOW OF JUDE BUT IT SAYS "WHEN" SO... | Jude 1:9 | jawz | 48123
The Jude passage is one example of the Apostles quoting tradition, you will not find it anywhere in the Old Testament, the same with verses 14-15. Paul also quotes tradition in 2 Timothy 3:8 and Acts 20:35

5 | God does create evil. | Is 45:7 | jawz | 48121
In his discourse entitled That God is not the Cause of Evil, Saint Basil the Great writes the following: "But one may say, if God is not responsible for evil things, why is it said in the book of Isaiah, 'I am He that prepared light and Who formed darkness, Who makes peace and Who creates evils' (45:7)". And again, "There came down evils from the Lord upon the gates of Jerusalem" (Mich. 1:12). And, "Shall there be evil in the city which the Lord hath not wrought?" (Amos 3:6). And in the great Ode of Moses, "Behold, I am and there is no god beside Me. I will slay, and I will make to live; I will smite, and I will heal" (Deut. 32:39). But none of these citations, to him who understands the deeper meaning of the Holy Scriptures, casts any blame on God, as if He were the cause of evils and their creator, for He Who said, "I am the One Who makes light and darkness", shows Himself as the Creator of the universe, not that He is the creator of any evil.... "He creates evils", that means, "He fashions them again and brings them to a betterment, so that they leave their evilness, to take on the nature of good". [St. Basil the Great, op. cit. 7, 94-96. In this particular passage, St. Basil carefully makes a distinction between the Greek verbs "ktizo" and "dimiourgo", both of which are generally translated into English as "create". However, "ktizo" has a long history, beginning with the Sanskrit kshi, which, as in early Greek, meant "to people a country", "to build houses and cities", "to colonize". Later, in Greek, the word came to mean "to establish", "to build up and develop", and finally, "to produce", "create", "bring about". Having in mind these other connotations of the verb "ktizo", St. Basil discerned the proper implication of the word in this context and hence made a point of emphasizing this distinction.] |

6 | Is the Bible filled with TRUTH? | Bible general Archive 1 | jawz | 47975
I can't remember who it was, but someone once said "All translators are traitors". Unless you are a native speaker of Koine Greek living around the time of the first century in Palestine, you are going to have to rely on what can at best can only be second best. It is my understanding though that none of the errors that exist in ALL translations will effect what is important in Christian doctrine. If there are grey areas in one passage, they will be clear on reading other passages. Again, ALL translations fall short. That is the nature of translating. |

7 | jawz, Who's the carpenter, son of Mary? | Mark 6:3 | jawz | 47971
So how do you explain Jesus entrusting Mary to the Apostle John. What is your basis for this if Mary has other children. We see in Acts that Jesus "brothers" believe after Jesus resurrection, so if they really are Mary's children they would certainly look after her. For Jesus to entrust his mother to someone else when she had other children would have been a serious breach of tradition and a serious affront to his "brothers. Can you explain this? No? Conclusion, Mary had no other children. |

8 | another hypothetical, applied ethics | James 4:7 | jawz | 47956
Your hypothetical is flawed from the outset. Satan is not the source of evil in the world, it is OUR disobedience, OUR rebellion against God. Satan dying would not remove evil from the world. I would help him. It would heap insults upon his head :) |

11 | was peter the first of a succession of p | Ps 118:22 | jawz | 47708
No other cornerstone (or capstone) is described as being the foundation of the church in scripture but Christ. Jesus is the stone the builders rejected in Psalm 118:22 which Jesus quotes in Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, and again by Peter in Acts 4:11 and 1 Peter 2:4-7. Paul says in Ephesians 2:19-20 "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone." Regarding Jesus giving Peter the "keys to the kingdom", he says the same to all of the Apostles again in Matthew 18:18. This promise was fulfilled in the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. If Jesus had made Peter the head of his church, over all the Apostles, then you would expect the Apostles to obey Jesus in his choice of leader. But if you look at the council held in Jerusalem in Acts 15, we see that it was James who presided over the council and not Peter. Also, if you read the early christian fathers, you will discover that Peter's successors as heads of the church in Rome did not believe that they had primacy over the the other churches, but rather lovingly rebuked those who held them in such esteem. |

12 | Could "me" be John? | John 14:6 | jawz | 47575
I find the opposite is very clear. This is obviously Jesus speaking and it should be obvious to you too if you read the rest of the passage you have quoted. Whenever John refers to himself in his gospel, he always refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. There is absolutely no mention of John speaking in this passage. |

13 | Cain and Abel's sacrifies | Gen 4:4 | jawz | 47434
I don't understand how you conclude they had to give "animal" sacrifices. Abel brought fat portions from some of [!]the firstborn[!] of his flock whereas Cain just brought some of the fruits he had grown, not the first fruits or the best of his crop. That is why his offering was not acceptable, not because it wasn't an animal. Gen 4:3-7 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord . But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." |

14 | Thank you | John 3:16 | jawz | 47431
The Nicene Creed or the Symbol of faith as it is otherwise known was formulated as a succinct statement of the christian faith (as revealed in the scriptures) in order to combat the heresies that were prevelant at the time. It was written by the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325 C.E., with additions by the first Council of Constantinople (381). There is dispute over the addition of the words "and the Son" in the sentence "And I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]" - by the church in Rome which is one of the issues which led to the schism around 1054. The Orthodox church holds to the original wording laid down by the councils, while the Roman Catholic church (and most Protestant churches since they still include much of their Catholic origins) have the addition. Although the Nicene creed is not scripture, it is based soundly on scripture and on the teaching of the Apostles passed on through the church. |

16 | did jesus die for the world? | John 3:16 | jawz | 47426
All of creation fell into decay through the sin of one man, Adam. In a similiar way, all of creation is restored through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I can't think of any verses to back this up right at this moment so take this as simply my opinion until (if) I find my references.
17 | What do you think? | John 3:16 | jawz | 47424
"only begotten" refers to the fact that Jesus always existed, he was not created as we have been created by God. God was always Father, Son and Holy Spirit. John 8:58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" The expression "I am" is the same used by God to Moses in Exodus 3:14 and in many places in in Isaiah. It denotes his eternal nature, the fact that he has always existed. The Nicene Creed sums it up nicely. I believe in one God, Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, Light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one essence with the Father, through him all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man, And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried, And rose on the third day according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, And He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, and Who spoke through the Prophets. In one Holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen. |

Are you certain that it is indeed the spirit of Samuel, or perhaps an evil spirit impersonating him? Leviticus 19:31 " 'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 20:6 " 'I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people. |

20 | Can We Walk on Water today??? | Matt 14:29 | jawz | 46534
Yes, but only to the greater glory of God. It is not something which we should seek after because it would puff us up with pride. Peter did it only because he had his eyes fixed on Christ. Others that have walked on water throughout the history of the church have been exemplary examples of humility and faith. Here are two that I can find: http://www.osb.org/gen/greg/dia-09.html http://www.ocf.org/OrthodoxPage/reading/st.mary.html |
