1 | Where should I turn?????? | Bible general Archive 2 | javelin | 154488
Yeah I know, I'm long winded - just like all the other preachers I know ! :-) Here are some web sites that can help in establishing the Bible and God's existence. http://www.godandscience.org http://www.geraldschroeder.com/new.html http://www.gnfcw.com/authenticity_of_bible.htm Others may give other web references as there are 100's of God/bible oriented sites out there - one must be careful in choosing though as there are also 1000's of anti-christ sites as well. I suggest you first get a bible in modern english and read - starting with the gospel of Mark and the letter of Paul to the Romans. There are tons of online bibles available as well http://www.biblegateway.com http://www.gospelcom.net May God Himself guide you. blessings |

2 | Where should I turn?????? | Bible general Archive 2 | javelin | 154487
I would note to other posters that daluvapassion15 asked for proof "other than the bible…" Using the bible to prove God's existence is circular reasoning. How can you prove the existence of God by using a book that you must first recognize as being from that God in the first place? daluvapassion15 : I suggest going through the following little bit of simple reasoning first to help you see that there has to be a Supreme Being. 1. Logical absolutes exist - to say they do not is to affirm it - "2 plus 2 equals 4" is always true in any universe and can never be false 2. Logic is conceptual - it is not a property of matter - it does not exist in nature : rocks, molecules, atoms etc. are not logical things - they just exist as matter 3. Since logic is conceptual it can only exist in mind or thought - therefore mind implies the existence of the meta-physical; i.e. that which is beyond the mere physical universe 4. Mind or thought must imply personality like reason implies a reasoner 5. Since logical absolutes exist and logic implies mind there therefore has to be an Absolute Mind from which and by which they exist are defined Simple huh? Furthermore : That Mind must have a personality or self-consciousness We can see then any absolute being necessarily refers the being we call GOD. The Absolute Mind, the Creator. It is quite reasonable therefore to expect that this Being who has created all things in the physical universe, having given every rational soul a mind like unto His own, that He would communicate with us. He would do this to insure that we do not conceive of Him as a mere created existence like some idol or creature. He would also do this to express His own nature to us. Since all humans have a thing called the moral sense - the notion that right and wrong really do exist and are not a mere invention of society -we may reasonably expect Him to have given us this since to know the difference between that right and that wrong. But the human race is full of suffering and evils of all kinds as is witnessed by all men’s experience in this world. The existence of evil, therefore, also gives this God a very good reason to reveal His existence to us in more than just a meta-physical way that our human frailty could easily miss. That revelation is in fact what we call the bible - a series of coherent writings from ages passed by people of different times that give witness to God and claim authority from God. Of course there are a ton of books claiming to be of divine origin these days. So how do distinguish bewtween the true and the false ? A good man named John Wesley once gave a very simple proof for the bible being the true word of God. He said, "The bible was either written by good men and angels, bad men and devils or God. Good men and angels could not have written it because they would not lie and say 'thus says the Lord'. Bad men and devils could not have written it because they would condemn themselves in it's pages. This only leaves God" Simplistic, I agree, but still a good brief proof. This forum's members could give you an excellent start in that books' authenticity and truth as versus the Koran and others. There are tons of posts here referring to biblical authenticity. Remember that there are around 23,000 copies or more of the original New Testament manuscripts MSS around today. All dated to the 1st or 2nd century AD. There are only about 7 copies Julius Caesars "Wars of Gaul" in existence and are all dated around 1000 years after their writing. We have an enormous amount of evidence for the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth from the dead, his works and life. Christianity is the only true "religion" because it is the only one that can deal with a man's past, with a persons wrongs against God and others. It is the only one claiming to have a leader that is NOT DEAD but ALIVE ! I hope this helps. "Look unto Me and be saved all the ends of the earth". |

3 | cursing? | Luke 6:28 | javelin | 154484
For the original question - "...can a pastor do this?" Absolutely not. This is nothing more than religious witchcraft. The so-called pastor ought to be severely rebuked by his overseers for such a thing. This person also should be required to go make restitution to those he cursed. IMO 99 percent of curses uttered by Xtians are totally outside of God's will as the scripture, as noted, teaches the contrary. People like that "pastor" are usually very insecure, proud, mean, hateful and bitter. They are usually occupied with building their own little kingdoms and not Gods. They also usually have unconfessed secret sins that keep them in darkness. So, they don't even realize how seriously wrong their words are. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" "whoever curses his father or his mother shall have his lamp put out in obscure darkness" Proverbs has a lot to say about the words we speak and their ability to give life or death. There are lots of "looneys" out there in the church ! ;) (mr. spurgeon once said that "we are all a little touched") but cursing other xtians for not doing our will is one of the worst forms of sin in the church today. The problem is that cursing does indeed have serious consequences. We need to recognize the power of words and use our big mouths to bless and speak life, health, strength and encouragement to all - not just xtians. |

4 | tongues | Eph 4:14 | javelin | 154178
Been reading through some of the answers to this post - not all of them. So many long hard to read answers, some junk theology and a few corny jokes. Kennyittis, the simple answer to your questions are - IMO and assuming, of course, you are sincere and telling the truth : Q1. are these words a known language? A. certainly known to someone somewhere if only God and angels - ref. "though I speak with the tongues of men or of angels..." - 1 cor. 13 i.e. tongues can human or angelic languages Q2. did i speak in tongues? A. yes Q3. if so why cant i speak tongues when i want? A. you can, whenever you want - it works by using it in faith I also suggest you bravely ignore any anti-tongues, tongues is of the devil, tongues is not for today etc. type answers - they are all junk theology with zero bibical basis Tongues is a gift, a prayer/praise language, and using it is an act of faith. It's for building up your spiritual strength or edifying yourself. mark 16 "And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues..." Again I assume you speak the truth and are asking a sincere question. hope this helps ;-) |

5 | Jesus is God, can Jesus sit at the right | John 3:13 | javelin | 152950
Intersting question. Sounds like a young persons question. This, of course is the mystery of the Trinity. In our feeble human minds it is difficult to understand how 3 can be 1 and 1 can be 3. A common analogy is water. As a liquid, a vapour and a solid (ice) it is always water nevertheless. Or Time - past, present and future. Take away anyone of them and it no longer makes any sense. Or Space - the 3 dimensions of the physical universe - height, width and depth. The text "sitting at the right hand of God" refers to several things : 1. In mid-eastern culture the right hand is the hand is used for designating dignity, power, strenth etc.. If you greet someone in bible lands with your left hand it would be viewed as an insult by many. Therefore when the bible uses this kind of language to explain the authority and dignity of Christ it uses "the right hand of God" - there being no greater power or dignity than that. 2. The text refers to Christ's physical being which rose to heaven literally, as being on the right hand of the Fathers throne. Yet, there are other verses which state that He is seated with the Father on the Fathers throne. Rev. 3:21 - "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne." So there again we have the mystery of the trinity or even just omnipresence - how can God be everywhere at once and yet still be said to be sitting upon the throne of the universe? To which the answer is simple - if He is everywhere then He is necessarily also on that particular place called the throne of God. 3. It may also be viewd symbolically as a reference to the authority, dignity and power of Christ - as being God the Son, yet submitted to the Father in all things. There are other scholars who think these words, and many like them, are actually what are called anthropomorphisms - which means the application of human words and terms to the divine. Things that could not elsewise be understood since so many divine things are laregly inconceivable by flesh and blood. A complete bible study of the "right hand" and the human/divine nature of Christ would be in order here. Hope this helps. ;-) |
