Dear hrnaval, Welcome to the forum! You have to go back a pace there and see verses 22 and 23; On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable. There was a situation in Corinth of exalting one type of gift above another type of gift and Paul is using the analogy of the parts of the body to say that each part is necessary to the growth and well being of the other part in the use of the gifts. Then he starts talking about in verses 22 and 23 about answering the pride he is seeing by stating those gifts in the body that do not appear to be so very appealing, as tongues happened to appear so appealing to them, should be given more respect because they are so very needful. A good example would be this, they were exalting tongues above all other gifts, the other gifts would be those in the list in verse 28 - apostles, pastor teachers, prophets, healings, helps, adminstrations, and in that list Paul list them in order of importance. Note how tongues is at the bottom of the list, but the Corinthians have exalted that above teaching and pastoring and prophecy (which Paul calls a superior gift in chapter 14). So he says in verse 22 that the gifts which appear to be weaker than the outward gift of tongues are more needful to the body. And in verse 23 those gifts that are not being exalted like tongues should have more adundant honor bestowed on them. When we come to verse 24 Paul is saying that the more presentable gift of tongues has no need of being made more presentable, but that God has arranged the gifts so that more honor is to be given to the other gifts which build up the body of Christ which are not yet being honored, so that the gifts that are not being regarded as honorable will be given greater honor than they were before. Hope this helps, God's Day To You, Tamara |

5 | Who are they ? | Matt 7:23 | Tamara Brewington | 205954
Dear lookin, I have heard two theories on this; I will paraphrase John MacAruthur first - he says that these people have a false profession of faith and that they merely claim to have done works in Jesus name and that the good tree bears good fruit and the bad tree bears bad fruit so what ever they were claiming they did in Jesus name was a false claim to greatness, and that they were making claims to salvation based on these false works, and so Jesus says, depart I never knew you. Now here is the other theory I have heard - Did not Jesus send out the seventy in Luke and to heal the sick, and to cast out deomns, and to proclaim the kingdom of God is at hand in His name. Then in John 6 we find that a large number of disciples desert Jesus because they could not recieve the teaching of eating Jesus flesh and drinking His blood, but some of these same disciples were also of the seventy. And then there is Judas who was sent out to heal, to cast out demons and to prolaim the kingdom along with the twelve in Jesus name, but who was a traitor to Jesus and the faith. Between these two we get those who may have very well gone and done great miraculous wonders in the name of Jesus, but who left off the faith having never believed in Jesus but having used His holy name to perform works which made them believe they were saved, but Jesus says to them, depart from Me, I never knew you. Now, doing the will of the Father would include but not be limited to doing miraculous wonders, and it is possible for an evil doer to perform miracles by the power of the devil according to Revelation and Daniel. And it may, I say may, be possible to make a false profession of Christ and run around spouting His name while actually doing miracles by the power of the devil. Just a last thought there, that was a real head cruncher there that one... you got there Lookin, your brain cognates sometimes there... God's Day To You, Tamara |

6 | Isa 6:9-10 translated differently in NT? | Is 6:9 | Tamara Brewington | 205919
continuation, Tamara You noted; But then the translation done from the Septuagint to English says: "You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' This people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed eyes" The focus is not on whether or not God makes them dull, it is on that they have choosen this. You noted; In the Hebrew, it looks like God is commanding His people not to understand. I mean, they've been denying Him so long, it makes sense that, like Pharaoh in Exodus, they're out of opportunities. The second version looks more like a prophesy..."you will...never [understand]." Here's the issue: when this passage is quoted in the NT, different versions are used. John 12:40 makes it seem like God deafens people, and Luke 8:10 shows that He accomplishes this through parables. They quote the first form; however, Matthew 13:14-15 and Acts 28:27 quote the Septuagint version and make God seem more passive and less like He forced them into a lack of understanding. When we come across these verses that seem like commands and then prophetic and then passive we should look for the pervasive guiding principles that drive what the authors were saying and what Jesus also was saying about it. The issue accroding to Isaiah was that someone had to be sent to tell the people their spiritual state - that they were not listening and because they were not listening they would keep on not preceiving, and that because of this God would make sure that they would not be saved. That was Isaiah's intent to his audience. Jesus did not change that intent, He upheld it in Mathew and used to parables according to what He said in both Mathew and Luke, to seal their fate according to what they had already choosen to do, not to listen and not to see. Isaiah by the way was prophesying about this according to John's account. Why wouldn't the NT authors quote the same version? I realize that they didn't speak to one another to coordinate, but since the Bible can't be wrong, I don't know how to explain the differences. The NT authors all had the same intent in mind, that in choosing not to listen or see, then God rendered them unable to understand and be saved. The differences are minor in detail, and not contradictory, but the substance remains intact. However, how does this fit with 2 Peter 3:9? Before we come to Mathew 13 Jesus has already preached many times to the crowds about the kingdom and shown them by miraculous wonders and forgiveness of sins that He is God and He knows also who will come and who will not to salvation at this point in time. So how this fits in the picture of II Peter 3:9 is that you have used II Peter 3:9 out of context. II Peter 3:9 is about that the whole earth and the whole heavens are going to pass away and be burned up, and that the Day of the Lord to judge the wicked is coming in the future, so then Peter says two things about this - with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like one day - and that this is refering to that the Lord is not slow about coming back to judge the wicked, but that He is patient toward those who still need to be repent and be saved before He comes back. So this is not talking about what happened to the wicked whom Jesus was addressing in the gospels while He was walking around alive, it is talking about why the Lord is taking so very long to come back before judgment day. What's the purpose in living anymore if God is done with you and you have no chance at hearing or understanding? Jesus gave them a chance to hear Him and come to an understanding but He knew they were rejecting Him and closed them off from the chance they threw away. We now have to hear and make our descision and not turn our backs on Him, Jesus says whoever will deny Me, I will deny him to the Father. Hope this clears it up, God Bless You, Tamara |

7 | Isa 6:9-10 translated differently in NT? | Is 6:9 | Tamara Brewington | 205918
Dear Live, Welcome to the forum! Interesting stuff indeed... You write; Looking for some assistance on the answer, especially the first part about why the translation differs in the NT... The Hebrew form of the text in NIV says: " 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed." I take it this is from Isaiah 6, you said in the Hebrew from the NIV? I found this in the NASB for the same passage perhaps it will help; Go, and tell this people: Keep on listening, but do not perceive; keep on looking but do not understand, render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and return and be healed. Do you see how the NIV says "make the heart of this people calloused", but that the NASB says " render the hearts of this people insensitive"? In this case the KJV comes closer than either translation here; Make the heart of this people fat, and make their eyes heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Notice the word fat, that translation of the word is closer to the Hebrew in the Strong's, and it is talking about being anointed with good things to the point of being fat. It does not really mean calloused, but insensitive does not quite capture it either, it is talking about being opulent, anointed with the things of life and becoming full of life in the heart, unable to hear and see. Let's deal with the problem of God making or rendering them dull of seeing and hearing; Romans 9:18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. He hardned Pharoah only after Pharoah chose to harden his own heart first in the OT right? I believe the same thing is the case with these verses you are studying; it is not that God makes them unable to see or hear, they are already unwilling and so God decides to render them unable to see or hear because of what they chose for themselves. more to come, Tamara |

8 | WHAT WAS THE SUBJECT OF JESUS PARABLE | Matt 13:1 | Tamara Brewington | 205915
Dear d, Jesus says in Mathew 13:11,13 To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while the seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. There are two parts to the audience, those who were His disciples and the those in the crowds who were not believers. It was appropriate to the disciples to reveal to them how the mystery of the kingdom works - Jesus used this parable about seeds not to illustrate seeds and farming, but to illustrate that when the word of God fell in the way of life something came and destroyed it. The subject of this parable is about what happens to the word of God in accomplishing salvation. Jesus reveals this in verse 15 where it says that if they would hear and see He would heal them, He means save them. The explanation of the parable is in verse 18-23; When one hears the word of God and does not understand it Satan comes and takes it away, the man who hears the word and receives it with joy but without a firm root falls away when persecution comes, the man who hears the word and worries about the world and wealth and has the word choked in him and is unfruitful, but the man who hears the word and understands it brings forth other believers some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty. Then Jesus says who has ears, let them hear because only to the disciples was it granted to understand the parables, but to others it has not been granted. It was appropriate to the unbelievers in the crowd because in verse 15 it says that the heart of the people has become dull and they scarcely hear and have closed their eyes and that He is speaking in parables, veiled mysteries lest they understand and be saved "heal them". With the parables sometimes Jesus explains it sometimes He doesn't, you always have to read further to find out if He did. Parables are all about the mysteries of the what the kingdom of heaven is like according to Jesus. They are stories about Biblical truths about Jesus and us, the word of God and us, and our relationship to Him and to God and His relationship to God, and the nature of the kingdom itself - what characterizes it the preciousness of it. Hope this helps, Tamara |

11 | Baptiam of the Holy Spirit | Eph 1:13 | Tamara Brewington | 205762
Dear dscott1, This has been a very hot topic around here lately on various posts, but I will not get into how to go about looking up all those post right now. I will leave that for someone else to do who like pointing people to posts as a answer (no offense anyone please, go ahead and give this person the numbers for the threads, I don't have time to look them all up). Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also, alfter listening to the message of the truth, the gosepl of your salvation - having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise. This verse according to Paul means that as soon as you believe you receive the Holy Spirit. This is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and it happens at the momentof belief. Let's take Mark 16:17 - These signs will accompany those who have believed; in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues. This passage is in brackets because there is a discrepancy as to whether or not it actually belongs in the NT at all according to the translators. I however believe in the essence of what the passage is saying as elements of it can be found to be said of Jesus elsewhere and this text does not contradict the whole counsel of scripture, rather it falls in line with it, which is why the translator keep leaving it in. I believe it is safe to say that all of these things did happen in Acts except the part about being poisoned. Okay, now lets' deal with Acts. Acts has been used for a very long time to uphold the belief that when one believes in Jesus there is to be a baptism of the Holy Spirit that is evidenced solely by the speaking in tongues because of the history of pneumatic infusion in Acts. However there are other schools of thought about how the Holy Spirit give evidence of Himself in the believer. There is also a discrepancy to whether or not He necessarily must give a visible evidence of any kind that He is in the believer at or near the moment of belief. Jesus sent the disciples to witness to groups of people as a commission in Acts. In Acts you will find that four groups of people received the visible sign of speaking in tongues when the apostles either preached to them, and or laid hands on them after preaching to them. In fact there were groups of people that got preached to who did not receive the Holy Spirit until the apostles showed up to do this very thing - like those who heard Philip and were baptized, yet did not yet have the Holy Spirit. The four groups are the Jews in 2 who were of the promises, the Samaritans in 8 who believed in the right God the wrong way, the Gentiles in 10 who needed to hear about who God truly was, those who only had the repentance and baptism of John in 19. Each of these four groups had to be brought into the body of Christ by the apostles and when each of thes four groups got brought in the evidence came that had received the Holy Spirit by the speaking of tongues. After Acts you do not see this same sort of activity pervasively happening because all the types of people that there are on the earth that could be brought into the body of Christ fit into these four groups and are all ready included as a group in the body of Christ, this is true even today. Either you are a Jew, or you believe in the right God the wrong way, or you are a Gentile, or you have only repented of sins and been baptized in water but you have not believed in the Christ and recieved the Holy Spirit at the moment of belief with or without evidence. There is not one group or indvidual today that would not fit in one of these four groups just as it was true then. There are instances in Acts like at the end of 2 where it does not say that there was evidence of tongues just becuase they now believed. Does not Paul say in I Corinthians 12 that not all have tongues do they, etc., but one and the same Spirit distributes the gifts severaly as He will and we are all baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ, but not all have the same function. How then is it that tongues is the only or primary evidence that one has received the Holy Spirit when according to Paul it is not? I do not find scriptural support for the belief that the gift has passed away any where in the Bible, nor do I find any evidence in the Bible that any other gift has passed away except being an apsotle. Paul states clearly that he is the very last apostle. This is not a popular belief amonsgt confessig Evangelicals because so many of the charismatice gifts have abused and misused and misrepresented in the churches. This does not mean that these gifts don't exist for real, it means that they have misused. God's Day To you and welcome Minister dscott1, God's Day To You, Tamara |

12 | Can Christian teach unsaved about ghost? | Bible general Archive 4 | Tamara Brewington | 205749
Dear heart, Don't explaim anything about what you know about why evil is doing anything to a child, you are right it will only scare. The best thing to do with a child that may or may not be able understand the salvation of Jesus Christ is to tell her that Jesus loves her and read her passages of the Bible that speak about God protecting from evil. I would only do this if you are already close to the parents and have a relationship with the girl. The parents obviously have to be given the gospel in order to get the real spiritual guidance they need in order to have a godly peacful home. Don't get discouraged about helping the best help you can give them my dear is your prayers every day and by encouraging them to come to church to hear the gospel and by continuing to be friends with them and be a real support to them by telling them that you are going to pray for them. You can also offer to pray with them and pray for their salvation as well as the little girl while they are all present with you together and offer to study the Bible with them. Perhaps your compassion is something God will use to help them know Him. Don't throw away an excellent opportunity to be a loving Christian to an unsaved family in crisis, this is why we are here right? To provide a light to a dying world? Hope, faith, love, but the greatest of these is love, Tamara |

13 | Can you say no to God too many times? | Matt 7:21 | Tamara Brewington | 205747
Dear MickysMom, Good question, and welcome to the Forum! Let's start with Lord, Lord; Mathew 7:21 Jesus says many will come to Him saying Lord Lord having done the works of God and performing miracles and Jesus will tell them He never knew them. So some will appear to be Christians due to good works right? Let's look at Romans 3:27 - Paul says where is boasting about keeping the law, essentialy, and then is boasting of works? Then he says no but by a law of faith... You ever heard of once saved always saved? You ever heard of by faith alone by grace alone? These concepts come from reading Romans, the whole book. And these things are true, our salvation is not conditional on whether or not we are able to keep from sinning but on the grace of God who saved us. You raise a most interesting and troublesome point however because there are several schools of thought on how what you are talking about works, the processes that is, and it most of it comes from scripture. So far I have talked about Paul and what he taught on the concept of what is called that one's salvation cannot be canceled out by a next sin, or a series of sin. You have to factor in though that Paul does talk about the process of sanctification whereby you willl visibly get better at not sinning and get closer and closer to being like Christ in your actions. According to Jesus it is possible to do good things like miracles and not make it in, but according to Paul there is not a possiblity of making it in if you are not saved by faith alone, by grace alone, and your works, as he agrees with Jesus is not the measure of your savedness for lack of a better term. Now, let's turn to John's writtings - he sets forth a different concept about being saved and what that consists of than Paul, he does not contradict Paul ever, but sets forth a kind of standard of what a confessing Christians should look like and act like. Let's go to I, II, and III John. There are a number of things to see here. First let's start with I John 2; 1)Do not love the world if any loves the world the Father is not in him. I John 3; 2)Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness and no one who abides in Him sins and no one born of God practices sins. 3)Whoever does not help his brother who is in need does not love God. 4)Do not believe every spirit only those who confess Jesus are of God. II John; 5)Whoever does not acknowledge Jesus as coming in the flesh is not of God. III John; 6)The one who does evil has not seen God. Partial Quote, John MacArthur Study Bible; Fruit Proofs of Authentic Faith Love for God Repentance From sin Genuine Humility Devotion to God's Glory Continual Prayer Selfless Love Separation from the World Obedient Living Hunger for God's Word Transformation of Life The good tree brings forth good fruit and the bad tree brings forth bad fruit, by their fruits you shall know them. There is the possiblity that a person can be saved and be fallen for a protracted period of time, or go back and forth, but at some point before they die if they are really saved, God will convict them and they will turn around, repent and walk holy in Christ Jesus and not live that way anymore. Hope This Helped, Tamara |

14 | psychic vs prophet difference | 1 Cor 14:3 | Tamara Brewington | 205717
Dear Believer53, By the way welcome to the Forum! I Corinthians 14:3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. We need to be carelful to have a Biblical understanding of what constituted as prophecy in the first century church here. What kind of information a prophet such as Paul was describing is a bit different than what you are sort of describing as bing a Christian and "knowing things". Prophecy is not simply a matter of "knowing things". Prophecy is about knowing "certain things", not all things. Paul is qulifiying the scope of the gift here; 1)edification - information that builds up the body of Christ that would concern everyone in the body and also separately as an edification to the body of Christ of the conviction of an unbeliever because the secrets of his heart are exposed in the congregation - see verses 24 and 25 for this part, most miss this part as part of the possilities of the use of the gift in the equation of it being valid at all today. 2)exohortation - the clarion call to use sound doctrine to address life issues and Christian practice - see II Timothy 3:16 3)consolation - the use of godly knowledge to provide comfort in distress. All of these things are done by the prophet with knowledge provided by the Holy Spirit to the prophet. A good example would be Agabus the prophet in Acts 11:27-30 who predicted a famine and the need for the congregation to send relief for the brethren in Judea. The famine did indeed occur as a recorded historical event and the relief was sent in time to provide much needed help. Do you see how this edified the body? It is not about being not doomed if you are a Christian if you know stuff and doomed as an unbeliever if you know stuff. Most self proclaimed psychics claim they are hearing from God because they believe they are practicing white magic, which presupposes that God has some dead good spirits hanging around to wait to speak to the living as "guides" in order to give life intructions to the "lost". This is a Babylonian and Egyptian practice of pagan idol worship that included "spirit guides" - there is nothing new under the sun dear... Have you ever seen Oprah? Well you aren't missing anything if you didn't, she has on a whole lot of new age teachers of vairous beliefs. She has had on a bunch of folks who will claim that they are hearing from God to tell you your business. That is being psychic, to tell you something to edify only you, not the whole body of Christ or to convict you to worship God. Do you see the difference now? God's Day To You, Tamara |

15 | laying out fleece vs divining | Judg 6:38 | Tamara Brewington | 205702
Dear Believer53, The laying out of fleece was actually something the Lord decided to answer tha Gideon did out of a lack of faith. Think about it a little -Gedeon says If you will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken, etc." We can stop right there, Gideon says something very important here, he says, "as You have spoken". God had already told Gideon what He would do. Then in the next verse 37 Gideon divises a test to confirm what God already promised to do! Let's not even get into you shall not test the Lord your God... God decides in His own mercy and sovereign will to answer Gideon's request for a confirmation of His word to Gideon. That is not diving anything that is asking God to confirm His word and only becuase God decided to answer Gideon are we hearing about in the Bible. Not to teach us to divine things, but as an expample of God interacting with man in a miraculous way that was never, ever repeated, nor will it be. This is what the Bible says about diviners, which would include dousing as dousing as it is a form of divination; Deuteronomy 18:10-13 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. Deuteronomy 18:14 For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the Lord your God has nto allowed you to do so. Dousing is done by having one with the power of divination go out and point a stick at the ground in order to "divine" where the water is. Persons are said to be born with this power, it is said this power runs in families and the like. I would say this - being a psychic of any kind is done by the power of the devil and sometimes quite effectively and there are many things folks may be able to truly acccomplish by the power of the devil. I am sure that being a pychic can be real because I used to be one before I got delieverd from the power of the devil. I used to be able to walk up to folks and know their personall business down to details I should not be knowing, I married into a family that did this on the side for a living part time and they would sit there in the fanciest hotels where there were long long lines of people waiting to be read for ten dollars a pop. The power of the devil has deceived many for century upon century with impressive feats of knowledge and divinations of all kinds, dousing is just one of many that does work, but is evil. The devil has a kingdom of which he is ruler and it is called the world forces of this darkness, called so by Paul, it is also said by Jesus that the earth is the kingdom of the devil. This stuff is very real and not all supersition based on nothing, but it is indeed evil and you should gaurd your heart and your very life from it by studying the Bible to find out every truth in it. God's Day To You, Just a evil sinner who got saved by His Infinte Grace, Tamara |

16 | very few accept the Lord today | Gen 6:5 | Tamara Brewington | 205680
Dear Charlo, Genesis 6:5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Man's heart is infinitely wicked and no one on their own recognizance comes to God without the acitvity of the Holy Spirit, the cross and the Father to draw them to God and salvation. It has always been this way, there are less people who will come to Christ than there are those who will be going to hell. Hell is going to be bursting at the seams, but there will be a whole lot of room in heaven and the New Jerusalem because man is depraved. God's Day To You, Tamara |

19 | what does verse 4 chapter 18 mean | Gen 1:1 | Tamara Brewington | 205613
Dear mhigh, What we have here is the first genealogy of the Bible that is the very beginning of the lineage of Jesus! What you have stumbled onto is the beginning of the line of Jesus, most folks think that it begins with Abraham because God have Him the promise that He would bless His seed in all the nations. Others trace it from David who was given the promise of an heir to the eternal throne. Here is what I found studying this; Genesis 5:1-32; Adam to Noah. Genesis 10:1-32; Noah to Joktan. The important person to trace here is Shem he carries the genealolgy of Jesus. Genesis 11:10-32; Shem to Abram. The imprtant person to trace here is Abram who becomes Abraham he carries the genealogy of Jesus. Genesis 12-49; Abraham to Isaac to Jacob to Judah. Mathew 1; take all the names after Judah and look then up them up in the Strong's Concordance to see what book they appear in all the way up to Jesus. Hope this helped, God Bless, Tamara |

20 | who torments in the lake of fireer | Revelation | Tamara Brewington | 205612
Dear n8, I do believe that God is the owner of hell and the lake of fire, two different places though; Jesus speaks of hell in Luke 16 as being a place of torment, then in Revelation we hear of the lake of fire in 19. God made the heavens He made heaven itself, since He created everything He also created hell and the lake of fire for the wicked. Hell is going to get thrown into the lake of fire though and who ever is in their in hell is going to come out and receive immortal bodies capable of buring for ever as they are resurrected to receive the Great White Throne judgment - John 5, Revelation 20. God who created all of the elements in the lake of fire and of hell set these places up as places of infinite and eternal torment and of burning fire. Is it not God who punishes all sin? Is it not God who has a promise to visit wrath on the unjust? I don't think God stands there in hell stoking fires, or that He needs anyone else to either, I think He set it up as a place that is perpetually burning as how He set it up to keep operating and give folks an immortal body to endure puniishment forever.
