1 | why is spirit growth difficult? | Gal 5:23 | Sir Pent | 129447
My Answer............................................................. Hello Tgbishop, Welcome to the forum. Galations 5:22-23 tells us that one of the "fruits of the Holy Spirit" is self-control. Therefore, if a person lacks discipline or self-control, that would be evidence that they also lack the Holy Spirit's leadership in their lives. It then goes without saying that it would be difficult to grow spiritually without submitting one's life to the Holy Spirit. You have asked a large number of questions in a short amount of time. I am curious where these questions come from. Are you taking a class perhaps that has led you to ask these? |

2 | References for Trinity Study | 2 Cor 13:14 | Sir Pent | 128684
An alternative analogy ............................................... Hi TGC, You mentioned that you have been studying the Trinity, and directed us to a website that has one analogy to help understand it. I checked it out, and it seemed to be saying that God reflected on Himself and that reflection was so complete that it was also Himself, etc. Although that is an interesting idea, I did not find it to be a very helpful analogy of the Trinity. However, I have previously posted an anology of my own that I find to be much easier to understand and more helpful. Perhaps you will find it of interest to your current study. Another Answer........................................................ Hi Nallon, Emmaus directed you to the verse that you were thinking of regarding their being no tears in Heaven after the end of time. This does not mean that God does not experience emotions however. In fact, your question led me to do a small study on the subject and here are some examples of emotions that God experiences: Love (1 John 4:10) Anger (1 Kings 11:9) Pleasure (Matt 3:17) Sadness (John 11:35) Amusement (Psalm 2:4) Jealousy (Ezek 36:6) Delight (1 Sam 15:22) Impatience (Jer 15:6) |

9 | Ezra , Artaxerxes comes before Darius | Ezra 4:23 | Sir Pent | 127774
My answer, referal to website......................................... Hello Power of Grace, This does seem to be a confusing topic. The problem is that there seems to be several kings named Artaxerxes (at least 3 in the Encyclopedia Brittanica), and also several kings named Darius (at least 3 as well). Perhaps the following information will be helpful for you. I found it at the website "http://christiananswers.net/dictionary/darius.html" "Darius, king of Persia, was the son of Hystaspes, of the royal family of the Achaemenidae. He did not immediately succeed Cyrus on the throne. There were two intermediate kings, viz., Cambyses (the Ahasuerus of Ezra), the son of Cyrus, who reigned from B.C. 529-522, and was succeeded by a usurper named Smerdis, who occupied the throne only ten months, and was succeeded by this Darius (B.C. 521-486). Smerdis was a Margian, and therefore had no sympathy with Cyrus and Cambyses in the manner in which they had treated the Jews. He issued a decree prohibiting the restoration of the temple and of Jerusalem (Ezra 4:17-22). But soon after his death and the accession of Darius, the Jews resumed their work, thinking that the edict of Smerdis would be now null and void, as Darius was in known harmony with the religious policy of Cyrus. The enemies of the Jews lost no time in bringing the matter under the notice of Darius, who caused search to be made for the decree of Cyrus (q.v.). It was not found at Babylon, but at Achmetha (Ezra 6:2); and Darius forthwith issued a new decree, giving the Jews full liberty to prosecute their work, at the same time requiring the Syrian satrap and his subordinates to give them all needed help. It was with the army of this king that the Greeks fought the famous battle of Marathon (B.C. 490). During his reign the Jews enjoyed much peace and prosperity. He was succeeded by Ahasuerus, known to the Greeks as Xerxes, who reigned for twenty-one years." |

10 | The Doctrines Please? | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 127440
Hello Ancient, You have asked a very good question. This forum does have specific doctrines that fall into three (at least) categories. However, most of these are not actually listed anywhere, so a new person would not know what they were until an old forum member let them know. The first group would be doctrines that are supported so strongly that they are not allowed to be debated at all. These would include the fundamental beliefs such as those summarized in the Apostle's Creed. The most common instances of this on the forum are discussions about whether Jesus was really God, or whether the Bible is true (inerrant, etc.). People who deny these sorts of things are usually banned from the forum. The second group would be doctrines that are allowed to be debated, but not on the homepage (thus the threads are restricted). The most common discussions in this category are on the Calvinism / Armenianism debate, the Pacifism debate, or discussions criticising the forum itself. These threads get blocked from appearing but do not get users banned (unless the user exclusively writes about topics of this sort). The third group would be doctrines that are allowed to be debated publicly on the homepage. These would include about everything else. For instance, people often debate what is going to happen in the end times, whether Baptism is a requirement for salvation, what is the Christian approach to divorce and remarriage, whether there is an unforgivable sin, which Bible version is the best, and many other things. All of these are controversial, but seem to be allowed to be debated here without penalty. I hope that this is helpful in understanding the forum better, and will help you to decide what topics to participate in discussing here. |

11 | Background info on Bible translations | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 121056
Referral to another thread............................................ Welcome to the forum Nxdxgirl21, In addition to EdB's great answer, I would just like to mention that you can trust any major translation to be the accurate Word of God. By major translation, I mean ones like NASB, NIV, NKJV, and KJV. They were all done by a large group of people who had committed their lives to the study of the languages and ideas of the Bible, and the product of their work has been validated over a period of many years by the Christian church as a whole. For more information on how much you can trust the modern translations of the Bible, type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. |

12 | The culture war | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120960
A different perspective............................................. Hi Pete2, I agree with you that there are more battles in the "culture war" than there are Christians willing to fight them. This is unfortunate but it does not mean that "Christians are a no show" as you previously stated. Your statements make me curious though. How can you see so clearly that Jesus is the only answer for society as a whole, yet you are unable to see that Jesus is the only answer for yourself? |

13 | Cristians are a no show in Culture War | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120844
Disagreement......................................................... Hi Pete2, I am confused why you don't think that Christians participate in the culture war. It seems to me that there are many Christians who are actively trying to shed light into the culture around them. The Salvation Army is a great example of a church that puts into practice the Christian beliefs of meeting the needs of the society around them. They are certainly not in a bubble :) The crisis pregnancy centers run by the Catholic church in cities across America are educating young mothers and helping them to have the support and supplies necessary for taking care of their babies. The Prison Fellowship ministry started by Chuck Colson has just recently been turning America's prisons around and greatly reducing recidivism (prisoners who go back to prison after release for more crimes). My local church currently shares around 50,000 dollars each year to support missionaries around the world who are sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Many of them are even from our church. Thousands of other churches are similarly involved. These are just a few examples of how Christians are indeed allowing God to use them to change the culture around them. |

15 | biblical authority | Bible general Archive 2 | Sir Pent | 120597
My answer............................................................. Welcome to the forum Strts, It seems to me that there are three possibilities here. The first is that your pastor believes that your church needs help so much that it would require so much time that you would not be able to also be involved with ministry outside of your church. The second is that your pastor knows that the Bible study you participate in outside of church has cultic influences, and your pastor is trying to protect you from them. The third option is that your church is a cult and the pastor doesn't want you to be in a Bible study outside of the church where you might learn the truth and get out of the cult. Without more information, there is no way to determine which of these, if any, are the case in your particular situation. |

17 | what is the longst name in the bible? | Acts 20:15 | Sir Pent | 120526
A bit of comedy...................................................... Hi Voliefe2, Perhaps the longest name in the Bible is the place where Paul went after Samos and before Ephesus. That place's name has a "mile" in it. P.S. Where do these trivia questions come from? |

18 | Angels mentioned by name in Bible? | Dan 8:16 | Sir Pent | 120524
My answer............................................................ Hi Debbie, In protestant Bibles there are two good angels named "Gabriel" and "Michael". In Catholic Bibles there is a third good angel named "Raphael". As for bad angels, the only one named is "Lucifer" aka "Satan". |

19 | Sexual relations with my Fiance? | Gen 2:24 | Sir Pent | 120521
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Teachandsing, Previous people have also asked that question. Please type the number 114024 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen to see several perspectives that I have on whether people should get married legally before having sex. P.S. Notice that the verse says to "leave you father and mother". I don't think a situation of having sex with someone while you're both still living sepperately with your parents fits this Bible verse. |

20 | Civil punishment impossible? | Luke 17:3 | Sir Pent | 120487
A different perspective.............................................. Welcome to the forum Pete2, If I understand correctly, you are saying that as Christians we must have unlimited forgiveness, and that this would lead to chaos in society due to a complete lack of retaliation and punishment. The first thing that needs to be explained is that there are eternal consequences to sin and there are earthly consequences to sin. Imagine a drunk driver kills another person, and later repents of their sin. The eternal consequence of their sin (Hell) is then taken away and they can spend eternity with God after they die. However, some of the earthly consequences can not be taken away. Their car may be able to be repaired, but the person they killed will not come back. Thus even Christians can support earthly punishment. Even a forgiven thief would still have to repay his victims. The second thing that needs to be explained is that the "nice" thing is not always the Christian thing. Imagine a criminal who commits credit card fraud. They may repent and be forgiven. However, it could be the Christian thing to do, to cancel all their credit cards. It may seem like the "nice" thing is to just pretend nothing happened and let them have absolute freedom again. However, that would just be leading them into temptation. What is truly in their best interest may be eliminate the opportunity to sin again until they are able to overcome its tug. That is the key issue for a Christian. Our response to sin should not be to punish out of retaliation or vengenge, but instead out of tough love for the other person. We should be motivated by bringing them closer to God. |
