2 | IsRapturenearfuture | Matt 24:3 | Sean | 58840
Depends if you believe in the Rapture or not (I will not go into the arguments for and against here unless someone really wants to know.) Generally, Jesus could come back at any time (Matt 24:42-44, Mk 13:32-33, Lk 12:40, etc.) The signs we should watch for: 1) Gospel preached to all nations - (Mk 13:10, Mt 24:14) 2) Great Tribulation - Mk 13:19-20 3) False Christs and Prophets - Mk 13:22, Mt 24:23-24 4) Signs in the Heavens - Mk 13:24, Mt 24:29-30, Lk 21:25-27 5) The coming of "the man of sin" and the rebellion - 2 Thes 2:1-10 6) Salvation of Israel - Rom 11:25-26 We are warned to watch and notice these signs as Jesus said, "But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Lk 21:28. However, this wasn't to give as a warning He is coming, but to warn us of the false prophets and Christs who want to mislead us. Looking at the signs, it is easy to say that they are being fulfilled and we could be taken in the next few hours/months/years. You could also say that back in 1950 1) Gospel was available and preached in every continent and nation. 2) The slaughter of the First and Second World Wars was the Tribulation 3) The Spiritualist movement, started in the US in 1848, was on the increase. 4) The US and USSR were conducting atmospheric nuclear tests. 5) Hitler was The Man of Sin, The rise of Communism was the rebellion 6) New State of Israel proclaimed in 1948. My point is that although we need to watch, and we need to be on our guard, we cannot tell if Jesus is coming in 5 minutes or another 500 years. It is very easy to look at the world around us think the end times are upon us. Although I feel we are moving toward the end, one interpretation I have heard for the restoration of the state of Israel is that the Jewish poeple need to embrace Christ. We do not, can not and will not know the time of the return of Christ. Matt 24:44 "For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will. Matt 25:13 "Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour. Mark 13:32-33 "But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. "Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come." Live your faith like he could come in the next few minutes with prayers on your lips and praise in your heart, after all you could be hit by a truck tomorrow. But plan to live a long, wholesome, fulfilling life in Christ. He will come when the Lord our Father knows the time is right. Sean |

3 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | Sean | 58838
Jesus is from the Greek Iesous, which is from the Hebrew 'Jehoshua' (or just 'Joshua') which means "Jehovah is salvation". This is the name the angel told Mary to give her son (Mat 1:21, Luk 1:31) Immanuel, although a name of Isaiah’s son, the Brown-Driver-Briggs' Hebrew Definitions has: Immanuel - "God with us" or "with us (is) God" 1) symbolic and prophetic name of the Messiah, the Christ, prophesying that He would be born of a virgin and would be ‘God with us’ Based on this Jesus (or Joshua) was his name, Immanuel was his title. 4 | OT practices not followed today? | Rom 14:5 | Sean | 58833
As you are looking at the old rites, ceremonies, and sacrifices of the Mosaic (the Laws of Moses) institution, the best book to read through is the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews (or just "Hebrews" in most bibles.) In this letter, Paul - an absolute expert on the Law being a devout Jew until his fateful conversion - was writing a letter to converted Jews adressing these Laws. The letter explains that all the Mosaic Laws have Christ for their object and end, and to have had neither intention nor meaning but in reference to Christ. I suggest reading the whole letter with a good commentary, but just to highlight the main arguments to answer your question: Heb 8:1-5 The tabernacle on Earth is a pale imatation of the true Heavenly Sanctuary in which Christ Jesus is our high priest. Heb 8:6-9 In a similar way, our New Covenant with God through the blood of Jesus, is far superior to the Old Covenant. Heb 8:10-12 This New Covenant was predicted by OT prophets Heb 8:13 The Old Covenant is abolished. The actual verse is: Heb 8:13 'When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.' NASB Hebrews chapter 9 then goes on to compare the ritual of the old Covenant, and it's purpose compared with the new. The basic premise is that the OT Laws where no longer a physical action, but written on our hearts. As christians, we cannot simply commit a sin, then burn a calf to gain forgivness - we must sincerly repent all our sin in the whole fibre of our being - we must live in Christ, and Christ in us. Hope this helps, Sean |

5 | Church should be on Saturday, Sabbath? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sean | 58648
As Christians, our Sabbath is Sunday to celebrate Easter and the Resurection. The important thing is to keep the Sabbath, the seventh day (See Luke 6:1-11)
6 | what happened to souls BC? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sean | 58647
This is an awkward one as this whole episode has been interpreted in one of three ways. Either 1) God allowed Samuel to appear to the woman, 2) she was actually in contact with an evil spirit in the form of Samuel who deceived her, or 3) through telepathy/clairvoyance she discerned Saul's thoughts and pictured an image of Samuel in her own mind which Saul would identify with. In any case, the fact Saul consulted a medium in violation of Lev 20:27 ("Now a man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist shall surely be put to death.") would imply it would be unlikely be case 1 since God forbids using mediums, but who knows the Mind of God? The key for your question is that the Hebrew word translated as "spirit" in the NASB is the plural form of "eloheem" which was used for rulers, judges, divine ones, angels or gods according to Strong's Hebrew dictionary. This is backed up by Albert Barnes' Notes on the bible which uses the word "gods" not "spirit" and states that eloheem "is here used in a general sense of a supernatural appearance, either angel or spirit. Hell, or the place of the departed (compare 1Sa 28:19; 2Sa 12:23) is represented as under the earth Isa 14:9-10; Eze 32:18." - so probably not the soul of Samuel. Either way it was fulfillment of the words given by Samuel 1 Sam 15:26 'But Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel."' and 1 Sam 15:28 'So Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor, who is better than you."' As for the place where they were going, this would depend on which thought you followed. As one exposition of the Bible put it: "and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me" seems to be a lie of the devil, and at best an ambiguous expression. If an evil spirit, it could not be true of Saul and all his sons, that they should be with him in hell, especially of Jonathan who appears throughout the whole of his life to have been a good man. If he was Samuel, the idea Saul being with him in heaven is a great stretch of charity, since Saul was a wicked a man, and who died in the act of suicide (though some belive that his sins were pardoned, and he was saved.) The final conclusion is that Saul and his sons will be in the state of the dead. (It should be noted that not all the sons of Saul fell in that fateful battle, as the expression seems to suggest; for there were Ishbosheth, and his two sons by Rizpah, which survived him; nor was it true of Saul and his sons that they were cut off, and that they died the next day; for the battle was not fought till several days after this. Thus "tomorrow" signifies some future time, and not strictly the next day, this shows the ambiguity of the expression used, and the insignificance of it to the present purpose; for who knew not that Saul and his sons would die some time or another? So when finally Saul and some of his sons died, they went to heaven or punishment just like any of us. Phrases such as Jesus saying "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43 cf. 2 Cor 5:8, Heb 12:23) support the view that when we die, our souls go straight to God's presence, or to eternal punishment (cf. Lazarus and the rich man - Luke 16:24-26). We are only returned to our bodies after the Second Coming before the Final Judgment. The fact they died before Christ meant they would judged on the Jewish Laws as stated by God. Abraham, Joseph , etc. had already died and were with God. The point to remember is that God is a fair judge. As Peter put it, we call "address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work." (1 Pet 1:17) Hope this helps. |
