1 | What date was Adam and Eve created? | Genesis | Rolff | 242695
Bishop Usher put a Creation date of 4004 BC, he had it down to the hour if not the minute. This was the date for over 200 years and the one I grew up memorizing. Smarter minds than mine found his numbers lacking and some rounded the date to 4000 BC or BCE. ... I am a grandfather, more than once I have called my grandson, my son. His father is no longer living and it is a term of endearment. There are places you can study in the genealogies where they skip several generations, possibly only mentioning important or famous members of the line. Can you imagine if every name for 4000 years were mentioned in scripture? It would take many pages of the Bible just to list them. ... Since we were not there, and since the Bible does not say, some put a date of no earlier than 10,000 BC. Our job today is to be like Jesus Christ. This creation date is one of the questions we will have to ask God in eternity.
2 | gifts from the holy spirit | Rom 12:6 | Rolff | 229888
Dear Squeakyford, Thank you for wanting to study the Bible. The passages include the following: A. Romans 12:6-8 B. Ephesians 4: 11-12 C. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11 There are a number of gifts the Spirit of God has been kind enough to help me discern • Apostles apostolous, Ephesians 4 • Celibacy, 1 Corinthians 7:7 • Discerning of spirits • Encourager • Evangelist • Gift of faith, pistis • Gifts of healing, iamaton of cures, 1 Corinthians 12:9 • Giver • Mercy • Miracles, dunameon • Pastors • Prophets in Ephesians 4. Prophecy , propeteia • Ruler • Server • Teacher • Tongues, gloson or glossalia, when used with phule (tribe) seven times in the New Testament • Interpretation of tongues • Word of wisdom, sothias • Word of knowledge, gonseos to know (compare with oida to understand.) Paul stated it correctly when he said, “There are diversities of gifts.” I do hope this answers your question and helps you find your peace in the abiding presence of God. |

3 | God as my light house | John 8:12 | Rolff | 229886
Dear Snookie, I am not aware of a verse in the Bible that talks about God as a lighthouse. I checked my electronic concordance and it came up blank. There are numbers of verses that indicate God dwells in indescribable light. Heaven will be lit by the presence of God described in the last chapters of Revelation. There are numbers of verses, including the following that talk about Jesus as light. Mt 28:3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. Mr 9:3 and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. Joh 8:12 ¶ Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." Joh 9:5 "While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." (NAS95) Thank you for your question, hope this answers your query. |

4 | why bible says the body is the temple | 1 Cor 6:19 | Rolff | 229884
There are several verses in 1 and 2 Corinthians that indicate our bodies are holy, and should be treated well. 1Co 3:16 ¶ Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 1Co 3:17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. 1Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? There are others that may want to add to my answer, but Corinth was an evil city that did many improper things. Paul mentions some of them in 1 and 2 Corinthians. He reminds us that our bodies are not to use up for pleasure, but as Christians or bodies belong to God and we should worship God with our whole being, including our bodies. |

5 | Person that went to heaven without dying | Gen 5:21 | Rolff | 229882
Thank you for your quesion. There are two persons in the Old Testament that may not have died. GEN 5:21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. 22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Elijah may not have died...2Ki 2:12 Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. (NAS95) |

6 | Order of the books of the bible? | Luke 24:44 | Rolff | 228814
In Theology this is called the Cannon or Canonicity. There are no simple answers. The Old Testament has been long compliled. The gospels mention the Law and Prophets many times and Luke 24:44 mention the Law, prophets and Psalms. The New Testament is a different story. "In A.D. 363, the Council of Laodicea stated that only the Old Testament (along with the Apocrypha) and the 27 books of the New Testament were to be read in the churches. The Council of Hippo (A.D. 393) and the Council of Carthage (A.D. 397) also affirmed the same 27 books as authoritative." http://www.gotquestions.org/canon-Bible.html There are other books the Apocrypha and Pseudographs, which most Protestant churches reject. The men that picked the New Testament Canon were men of God, chosen by thier churches. At some point one has to decide to believe and follow or not to believe and not to follow Scripture. |

7 | Zechariah in OT same as in Luke 1:5 | Luke | Rolff | 228811
I believe your information is correct, the two Zechariahs lived at least 450 years apart. How many Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and Alex do you know? Probably more than one. There are at least four distinct Marys in the New Testament. Zechariah means "YHWH remembers." Both had the same job of temple priest. Hope this answers your question as you continue to study your Bible.
8 | how does Pauls three journeys correlate | NT general | Rolff | 228393
You have asked a question that is too large for this venue. The three Missionary Journey's of Paul are found in Acts The first Journey is Acts found in Chapter 13 and 14. The second journey is found in 15:36 to 18:22 and the third journey is in 18:23 to 20:38. If you hear about a fourth journey, it is Paul's trip to Rome. Most of what you ask is in this text of Scripture. Ie. Ephesis is Ephesians. Philippi is to the Philippians. But Galatia is a provence like a state. It included cities in the Biblical text including Antioch, Iconium and Lycnonia. I would like to suggest you garner a copy of THE LIVE AND EPISTLES OF ST. PAUL by Conybeare and Howson for the classic on the topic. |

9 | Whence cometh the races? | Gen 11:7 | Rolff | 223395
I got interested in this question when I was not Chinese, but dating a Chinese. First, we don't know the answer to this question because it is not listed in scripture. Races may as you suggested have changed when God changed the languages. They may have woken up under the shadow of the tower and said, "Uh, you speak funny and look funny." and separated. Second, it could be related to geography, while there are many exceptions, light skinned people seem to be farther north and darker skinned people seem to be native to warmer climates. Third, it could be that before car and airplane travel closer relatives married and created the diversity of homo sapiens that add to our kind because God created that diversity in our genes.
10 | Obey your leaders ? | Acts 5:29 | Rolff | 216621
Question (long): In Heb.13:17 it says. “Obey your leaders and submit to them.” Who are these leaders, and should we blindly submit to them? The Hebrew passage appears to be talking to the Church and Church leadership. Jesus clearly stated in Matthew 22:21, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.” In the USA it would include but not be limited to Pastors, Policemen and the President. What is our responsibility in the cases where there are clear abuses of power? The Romans government clearly abused their power in the later part of the Empire, but Christians obeyed to the death as long as it did not contradict Scriptures. When there was a difference between Scripture and Law, Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, "We must obey God rather than men. Are they the same as found in 1 Pet. 2:13 1PE 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 2:14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 2:15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. Authority is authority, we should submit to our boss, wives should submit to their husbands, we should submit to our pastor, we should submit to policemen, we should submit to our federal government, except in places it contradicts scripture. 1 Timothy 2:2 for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 2:3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, |

11 | Is the ASV equal to the NASB? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Rolff | 216619
Is the ASV equal to the NASB? There are several ASV versions. There is the 1881 version several versions between and the 1901 version. We know much more in the later part of the 20th Century of geography, word studies as well as archeology. The NASB came out around 1970. I used this and the King James Version to translate the Greek text in seminary. Around 1995, a New, NASB arrived on the scene that had changes in the language, including removing the Old English, "Ye" and other obtuse language. I use this NASB-95 version as it is about as close to the Greek as one can translate from one language to another. To answer your question, I used the ASV-1901 before the NASB. Once the NASB, while quite wooden, it was a literal translation of the original languages. Once the NASB-1995, it is much easier to read, and remains very literal to the translated languages. |

12 | explain baptism into moses | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 216397
1CO 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all [pas, all or every]under the cloud, and all [pas, all or every] passed through the sea; 10:2 and all [pas, all or every] were baptized [dip or sink] into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 10:3 and all pas, all or every] ate the same spiritual food; 10:4 and all [pas, all or every] drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. I must confess I have not seen this passage before although I have read 1 Corinthians many times and my trusty electronic concordance was unable to pull it out. This is one of the reasons I enjoy viewing this Forum. The original question was, “scripture states that we were baptized into Moses explain and was it considered wet or dry.” I believe the answer is in the text above. Some date the Exodus including Moses around 1444 BC, most of the Christians in both Saul called Paul’s time and ours did not pass under the cloud or thru the sea in a literal sense. Therefore it must be a spiritual or dry baptism. This is stated concretely in verse 10:4. On 2/29/2004 the following was posted in this Forum regarding 1 Cor 10:2… Subject: Baptism a warning about overconfidence Note: xxx, I won't explain. But your response is exactly what I hoped to get from all parties to the baptism controversies here on the forum. More thinking, less posting would be good. Emmaus Blessings, I hope I answered your question on wet or dry. |

13 | explain baptism into moses | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 216385
I was intrigued by your question. A quick search of my concordance came up "dry" on Moses and Baptism. I looked up “baptized into Moses” with no results. Even a quick scan of all references to Baptism came up as a dead end. Would you be so kind as to include a biblical reference to guide this writer? Thanks. |

15 | Blessings A Hundred Fold | Mark 10:28 | Rolff | 212324
Mark 10:28-31 NASB Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You." Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake, but that he shall receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first, will be last; and the last, first." Aloha: I am missing the question, to me this passage makes complete sense with the entirety of Jesus’ statement. Peter makes the statement, “Behold, we have left all to follow [You].” Joshua (the name of Messiah) states what you give up on earth for the good tidings (euaggelion or gospel) will get back 100 times more with eternal life. But many who are rich here on earth will be poor in heaven and the poor on earth will be rich in heaven (my loose translation.) Aloha, in this season we celebrate the Incarnation. |

16 | Murder vs Killing | Ex 20:1 | Rolff | 211885
kamschoolgrad, There are many sides to God. My father used to kid my mother about the husband that needed to hug, chalk and hug some more before chalking because his wife was so fat. In many ways, that is the way to look at God. In fact, that is how theologians look at God. We take what we call attributes and only look at one part at a time of the total of what God is, because we can't see all of him at one time. If we could understand God, He would not be God. I am not sure anyone can answer your question completely as it is in the heart of God. But the substance, when one peels off all the layers of God: is love. God is love, 1 John 4:8. God's love makes him love, at the fall this is what we lost. We do things and ask, what is in it for me? God not only made us when He did not need to but he gave his son to die for people that didn’t like him, because God is who He is. I might die for another, but I wouldn't give my children for another...that is how much He loved you and us. But there is another side of God after the chalk mark. God is a God of absolute purity that expects us to love Him. He is a jealous God. EXO 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, We can say this is unfair, but God makes the rules and he says that is the way it is. God's holiness demands holy. MAT 5:48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. [Some translations use mature, which helps me sleep at night.] When I first read the article you wrote in your question, my first thought was this is immoral person. I am 2200 miles and five hours by air from Maui but I have heard Dawson McAllister and Josh McDowell both mention that people that have hidden sin need to disprove God to prove they are OK. If there is a God then they need to repent, which they have no intention of doing—so they say there is no God or he is a bad God, as the author of the article was trying to prove. You will not win this argument by argument. You will win it by ... love. God loved so much he died...talk about an oxymoron. Your husband needs to 1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; Aloha, don dba Rolff |

17 | Problem sharing our faith? | Ex 20:1 | Rolff | 211871
Dear kamschoolgrad, Your question in part, “Well, we all know how preposterous it would be for such a story to be true, yet this is exactly what the god of the Christian bible did. Deuteronomy 5:17, "Thou shall not kill." Deuteronomy 13:9, "but you shall surely kill him." When are the people of the real world going to realize that although some of the bible stories may be historically truthful, most of them are fairy tales that can't be taken seriously?" Mahalo, actually, this is one of the best reasons for donating the King James to the library of antiquities. I love the KJV, but it is a foreign language to 21st Century readers. Thou shalt (not even in my word-processing spell-check dictionary) not kill is not a good translation for 21st Century readers. Second, your question is about definitions. In Exodus 20:13, Deut 5:17 both read, "You shall not murder." NASB. The language the Old Testament was written in, Hebrew uses the same word in both verses, ratsach, which is murder. The same Hebrew word is used six times in the Old Testament, let’s look briefly at them. EXO 20:13 ¶ "You shall not murder. DEU 5:17 ¶' You shall not murder. PSA 62:3 ¶ How long will you assail a man, That you may murder him, all of you, Like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence? PSA 94:6 They slay the widow and the stranger, And murder the orphans. JER 7:9 "Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and offer sacrifices to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known, HOS 4:2 There is swearing, deception, murder, stealing, and adultery. They employ violence, so that bloodshed follows bloodshed. HOS 6:9 And as raiders wait for a man, So a band of priests murder on the way to Shechem; Surely they have committed crime. Regarding murder, Miriam Webster’s Online Dictionary states: “The crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice or forethought.” There were six cities of Refuge, given by God to protect the person that took the life of another without intent. The example that is used is if the ax head comes off while chopping an tree and another dies. The one living could run to one of the cities of refuge until the high priest died and then go home. Numbers 13:35f . A person died, but the life of the one taking the life was saved by God’s decree because it was accidental. War as horrendous as it is, is not forbidden in the Bible. War is not murder. Accidental killing, be it by car, stupidity or accident is not murder. Murder is a drive-by shooter taking the life of a friend of mine. Murder is intentionally taking a weapon and using it until it removes the life of another. In Deuteronomy 13:9 kill means kill. The Hebrew word is harag according to my Hebrew lexicon means kill. Miriam Webster’s Online Dictionary states, “transitive verb, to deprive of life : cause the death of “ Quell is from the same etymological root. Capital punishment is not murder. Which begs to your question; If one takes the life of another, Deuteronomy 5:17 that person should be put to death Deuteronomy 13:9. [When I was a boy there was little murder because the murderer was a dead man in short order. He did not want to die, so he didn’t take the life of another. The more lenient we get on murderers the more murder occurs. The Bible never talks about prison, but it does tell us to remove the murderer from among the living.] Aloha, Rolff |

18 | Harmony between two thoughts. Joshua 7 | Josh 7:1 | Rolff | 211853
You are thinking as a western civilization person. I can't for the life of me understand why because the king died the country ran and lost the battle. After all it wasn't me and sorry it was him not me, but why loose the battle over one man no matter what his title. This story is in the history books of the Bible. In the Old Testament and to a great degree today in Asia it is group mentality. When one dies, all is lost. The group pays for the sin of the individual. Your question assumes they were inocent, there is nothing either way to assume Achan's doomed relatives were guilty or inocent. If my wife brings something large like a brick of gold and a closet full of clothes into the house, I and my children would know. These relatives proably knew about the sin and did nothing to expose the sin after all they were rich while the gold was under the floor. We as individuals are not to punish the children for the parents sin. It is a different perspective. Something to chew on while I run to church this fine California morning. |

19 | explain John 4:13-14 | John 4:13 | Rolff | 210568
Leanee, welcome to the Study Bible Forum. I am studying 4:23-24 in depth and looked up the page to verse 13-14. Jesus, in John 4, the longest dialogue in John is talking to a Samaritan woman. He moves the conversation from the natural to supernatural. He is sitting at Jacob's well next to literal hydrogen dioxide and moves the conversation to spiritual water. We need to drink 8 glasses of water a day to stay healthy. But Jesus stated spiritual water doesn't need to be replenished. As an outcast woman of the community who came to the well at high-noon to avoid the stares and words of judgemental women, a water source that would keep her from coming to the well was worth investigating. Jesus knew exactly how to pull her in from her physical need to get her to talk to her spiritual need and eventually her village was saved because of this statement. |

20 | time line for the rapture and after? | 1 Thess 4:13 | Rolff | 210493
Sue, Let me be the first to attempt an answer. First, the SBF has several rules and one is not to intentionally cause division. Your question by the nature of the question could be divisive as you attempt to understand the Bible. There are three views. The Pre-Tribulation theory. In a sentence this theory states that the Messiah will come before the tribulation. If so then the tribulation will be next in chronology. If you believe in the mid-Tribulation theory, then Christ will come in the middle of the tribulation and the last half of the trib will be next. If you are post-tribulation then the Millinium will be next. |
