2 | Meaning of John 12:24-25 | John 12:24 | Phil12123 | 126143
Verse 23 says, "And Jesus answered them, saying, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.'" His glorification must be preceded by his death and resurrection. In context, Jesus may be saying that His death is the key to others' spiritual life and fruitfulness. And unless WE die to self and the old man is crucified with Him, we will "live" only to ourselves and then die ("will lose it"). Christ is our life (Col.3:4) and we who have given our lives to Christ "have died and [our] life is hidden with Christ in God" (v.3). It is interesting that in our pre-faith "life" we are described as "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph.2:1) and in our faith-filled life we have "died with Christ" (Rom.6:8) and are "dead to sin" (v.11). So, once dead IN sin, now dead TO sin. Perhaps Gal. 2:20 says it all, "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me." 3 | Hindered Prayer / wall of sin | Bible general Archive 2 | Phil12123 | 126002
Hi Carter, The two verses you already found are good and I would add to them Ps. 66:18 and Is. 59:1-2. All four passages give us the general idea that sin hinders prayer. And it is easy to see why--when we approach God with unconfessed sin in our lives, we are not, in a sense, on good speaking terms with the Lord. Anything we want to talk to Him about is really less important to Him than our needed cleansing, which He lets us know is of primary importance by, for example, letting us feel like our prayer is getting no higher than the ceiling. Sin affects fellowship, which may be another word for "good speaking terms." When fellowship is restored by confession and cleansing (1 John 1:9), prayer is sweet communion with the Lord. Phil |

4 | purgatory | Bible general Archive 2 | Phil12123 | 125832
That is correct, Mike, there is no purgatory. The idea is totally foreign to scripture and is based in part on the unscriptural idea that there are temporal punishments due for sins, even forgiven sins, which we must suffer in this life or in the life to come before we can enter heaven. Christ did all the suffering that will pay for our sins IN FULL (1 Pet. 3:18; Heb. 10:10-14; John 19:30). The idea that you can suffer to pay for your sins and thereby expiate them is totally unscriptural and takes away from Christ's all-sufficient sacrifice on our behalf. It also totally ignores Christ's righteousness which is imputed to the believer (Rom.4), as well as His present work of intercession on our behalf (1 John 2:1; Rom. 8:34). Phil |

6 | Rapture - dead rising | John 11:25 | Phil12123 | 125815
Yes, when a believer dies, his soul/spirit go "to be with Christ" (Phil 1:23), but his body is buried. At the rapture, "the dead in Christ," i.e., the bodies of those Christians whose souls have gone to be with the Lord, will be resurrected and reunited with the souls Christ "brings with him" when He comes back (1 Thess. 4:14). So, the Christian who has died will once again be a whole person, body, soul, and spirit. The body will "put on incorruption" (1 Cor. 15:53). Those Christians who have not died (are "alive and remain" 1 Thess.4:17) will be caught up, but at that moment, in the twinkling of an eye, their bodies will be changed and the mortal will "put on immortality" (1 Cor.15:53). The dead rise first because they undergo that reunion of body with soul/spirit, which the living ones don't need since they are already united, whole persons of body, soul and spirit. Hope that helps. Phil |
