1 | Minor Prophets | OT general | Paul Birston | 207653
You might find this information helpful from the book "The Minor Prophets" by Jack Lewis (p. 11): "...it would seem that length and date play a part [in the order]. The Assyrian period prophets are placed first and the Persian last. Within these periods the longer prophets come before the shorter ones. However, no theory is satisfactory to explain the position of every book."
2 | this mean baptism saves you? | Acts 2:38 | Paul Birston | 201949
Hi belovedofgod: God saves us by several things working together including the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1-11), the blood of Jesus, grace, faith and baptism (lit. immersion). It is into the likeness of Jesus' death and resurrection that we are baptized and raised (Romans 6:1-11). Another helpful passage explaining the relationship between Jesus' death for our sins and baptism is 1 Peter 3:18-22, "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to him." May God bless you and guide you in your walk with Him and growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, Paul |

5 | Questions about Peter- Rock andkeys | Matt 16:16 | Paul Birston | 188911
Hi Christian 2003 One very helpful interpretation of Jesus' statement in its context is that Jesus will build His church on the basis of the truth that He is "the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is the confession that Peter makes. God revealed to him. The recognition of Jesus as the Son of God as revealed by the Father would seem to be the highlight of this passage rather than the person of Peter. You will find many key verses throughout the New Testament that support the truth that Jesus, the Son of the Living God, is the foundation of His church. 'Hope this helps, Paul Birston |

6 | Is there one or two Christain baptism's? | Eph 4:5 | Paul Birston | 184954
Hi UnityIII To your first question in Ephesians 4:5 Paul confirms there is one baptism. To your second, I hope it is helpful to know that there are indeed many congregations of the Lord's church that are operating with one baptism. In baptism we receive the forgiveness of sins, the gift of God's Holy Spirit and we are clothed in Christ (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1-11; Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21). There are many wonderful things happening at once and I think this is why Paul could teach what he did. I hope this is a helpful to start to answering your questions. Paul |

8 | Tongues mean Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:38 | Paul Birston | 181559
Dear WTB: It should be reassuring to you and for all Christians to know that there is a specific known time in one's response to God at which time a believer receives God's Holy Spirit. Peter made this clear on the Day of Pentecost when he answered those who asked what they should do in response to the gospel of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection: "And Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Paul spoke further about this important time when he wrote in Romans chapter 6, "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection" (Romans 6:3-5). All Christians should have peace of mind in knowing that at the moment when they are baptized into Christ they are united with Him and receive His Spirit. |

9 | Need Bible refs re: faith in hard times | Hab 3:17 | Paul Birston | 180064
Maggievt Here are three verses I find helpful from Habakkuk: 3:17 Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, 3:18 Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. 3:19 The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places. |
