2 | Are we ever "worthy" of God's love? | John 3:16 | NewLump | 51827
Kas, I've read the exchange with Hank and I'm wondering if you're asking a different question. The choice of the word 'worthy' has a conotation of the economics of redemption. i.e. We have no ability apart from God to save or justify ourselves. Is that what your trying to get to? Or is your question more along the lines of personal value, is there anything in us worth saving? To me, that is a very different question. Hope I haven't wasted your time. N.L. |

5 | Am I lost for eternity because of sin | 1 John 1:9 | NewLump | 37411
Listen to the Word of God, not the condemnation of Satan. 1 John 1:9, the book of Galations, Romans 5, etc.,etc.,etc. If the blood of Christ only washed us up to a certain point in time and after that we must live perfect lives, no one would be saved. We all continue to sin(live imperfectly and deliberately disobey)after salvation. Our only hope is Jesus and His payment of our debt. There is much about the 'economy' of salvation in the scriptures but there is also much about the state of salvation, i.e. being adopted into God's family. John 1:12 'to all who recieved Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God...' We are made part of His family. We don't stop being part of His family. Your guilt is from the Holy Spirit within you testifying that you need to turn around. Stop heading the way you've gone and start living the way you know He wants you to live. The way that brings life not death. Guilt concerning behavior is of the Spirit, condemnation of you as a person is not. Thoughts calling on you to correct your behavior are probably from God. Thoughts that suggest you are of no value and have no place in God's family are not from God. |

7 | Baptism of the Holy Spirit, #2?!?!?!?!? | Eph 4:1 | NewLump | 36536
Boy J.S. the fur will fly with this one. Here's my two bits... Read Ephesians, several times. I believe that we(bible believing christians) have a lot of problems with mystery. We want to stay inside the lines and if we can't find them, we create them. Often when they don't truly exist in scripture. I've been through 3 breakups in churches over this matter. No one has it right. It's not all one way or the other. There is scripture that talks about the 'baptism' of the Holy Spirit. I don't know of a way to objectively say you've been baptised in the Holy Spirit. Some say it must be by speaking in tongues. I don't believe that is scriptural, others do. I don't speak in tongues but I believe I have been 'baptised' in the Holy Ghost. I have been slain in the Spirit(an interesting event). For me Ephesians holds the key to the balance. The supremecy of Christ and the extravagant work of the Spirit to develop the Bride for Him. All for the glory of God. Truly incredible, truly a mystery. The key issue I see in this long-standing debate is that the hallmark is the building up of the body of Christ, not the tearing apart of the body of Christ. Eph.4:15 "but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ," Remember it's not about being right or wrong, it's about becoming like Christ. May God grant you wisdom and insight in your pursuit of Him. |

8 | Marriage | Gen 2:20 | NewLump | 36524
Wow, big question. My answer would be: The will of the people making the vows. There are lots of ways God blesses a marriage but when push comes to shove the decision will be by the person(s). They may be assisted by the Holy Spirit (although that isn't specifically promised that I know of). I have only been married for 25yr. I have seen several marriages break up and some get back together. It usually comes down to a deep seated belief that vows were made before God and His will is for them to stay together. So they go to Him for the solutions, character changes, but mostly grace to see the person that God sees and love them. That kind of faithfulness to God and each other seems to be blessed by God. But remember normally the blessing follows the obedience, not the other way around. There may be many ways spiritualize why Godly marriages stay together but in the 'heat of battle' frayed emotions cloud a person's thinking; the true God is often forgotten and a charicature of God is erected to support whatever one's argument might be. The argument usually breaches scripture, mis-quotes scripture or ignores it. Only a tenacious intent to obey God, fervant prayer and sacrificial surrender of one's 'rights' can keep a marriage together. One important note: I am not suggesting that in abusive situations that you don't take steps to address the problem. Love's intent is health and growth not continuance of a sickness. Just my thoughts. |

9 | Why claim your tithes on your taxes? | Rom 13:1 | NewLump | 36502
I'm not sure that you've asked a question. My personal reason is that He has told me to be a good steward, to be wise in my use of the resources He's given me. He's also said to obey the government. If telling the government that I support christian ministry will lessen the amount of tax I pay, I have more money to send to christian ministry. My tithe isn't compromised. I just pay less to the government. I'd really like to know if you see a problem in this line of thinking? Is this non-biblical rationalization?
10 | post modernism in the churches thinking | Bible general Archive 1 | NewLump | 36491
Aussie, I'd like to dialogue but I want to be sure I understand your question. I did a little reading yesterday about the post-modernism philosphy. I'm not the scholar that many in this forum are but I'm trying to learn. My understanding of the position is that philosophically we aren't to seek a wholistic approach to the universe, life or virtually anything. Situations, issues, accidents, stand alone and aren't necessarily 'connected' to other things. Life is basically a series of fragments that fall together. The reading I worked my way through suggested that some would say that humanism and new-age movements have their roots in this position. That is man is not connected to the universe via God. He(she) stands autonomous from any supreme being. I want to be sure I've not misunderstood the philosphy. Is this the position you were looking for comments on? |

11 | A question about Jonah | Gen 1:1 | NewLump | 33690
Chynna, I don't think your question is a joke. God used an animal in my life to communicate His love and reality. I understand the skeptical responses. We often forget that God is not constrained by anything except His own character. He is not limited in what(or who) He uses to communicate something to us. I don't see biblical evidence for animals having a soul or spirit. I do see many references to animals in the scriptures. Many animal traits are recommended to us for imitation and encouragement Prov. 6:6. Christ Himself(Lion of Judah and Lamb that was slain in Rev. 5) draws on images that these animals represent to us. Whales(great fish), donkeys, birds, bushes, God uses all of creation to glorify Himself and communicate His divine nature(Rom.1:20). Romans 8 poses some interesting thoughts about whether there is any knowledge of God on the part of animals(and all creation). That's something to ponder. Lot's of mysteries in the scriptures. Always more to learn. |

12 | Abortion for medical reason ??????? | Ex 20:14 | NewLump | 32749
Witp, I am joining in prayer also. I know this is a bible study forum but...I am ignorant and confused. Won't the pregnancy prevent menstrual cycles and thereby stop the bleeding problem? Is the IUD the ONLY method to deal with the problem? Remember the end of 1 COR. 10:13 "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." I believe God has good things in store for you my brother. DO NOT DISPAIR. HE IS THE GOD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE!!! |

13 | What are the works of the Holy Spirit? | John 14:26 | NewLump | 32604
'Works'? See John 15:25-26, and 16:8-11 The Holy Spirit brings God's infinite nature into a believer's finite life. His work is extensive, intrusive and pervasive. There is much in the scriptures concering His 'works'. |
