1 | What does adoption mean this verse | Eph 1:5 | Jeff12 | 114891
This word "adoption" was a question that I had myself. I'm not exactly sure who I heard it from but their explanation was this: Paul had been to Rome and this term "adoption" comes from Roman culture. A Roman citizen could disown his own flesh and blood son but if they "adopted" someone they could never disown them. The adopted had full rights in that household and could not be tossed out or denied the rights of that household. They would also be quarenteed their rightful inheritance. I think this a beautiful and accurate meaning for the word "adoption". I'll use these Scriptures but there are probably better ones. Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 2 | Praying in tongues? | 1 Cor 14:1 | Jeff12 | 76720
1 Cor 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. KJV Speaking in tongues is always speaking to God including the interpretation of it if done. This verse here says that speaking in tongues edifies the one doing it. Paul does go on to say that speaking in tongues without the intrepretation of it does not edify the church simply because people do not understand the message because they don't know the language. But speaking in tongues in your own private prayer life will edify (build you up spiritually)you. |

3 | image of God | Gen 1:26 | Jeff12 | 53641
Since God is Spirit we know that is not the "image of God". I believe it to be the attributes of God: rational, reasoning, emotional, judgement, discernment. I'm sure there are others but essentially it seems we have many of the same "mental" faculties of God. God always uses His "faculties" with perfection whereas we don't.
4 | Evidence of holy spirit in a Christian? | 2 Tim 1:14 | Jeff12 | 51587
Gal 5:22,23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. KJV Fruit here being a good tree planted, watered and nourished over time with increase given by God bearing good fruit. The same is true of the seed of holy spirit. There are other evidences of the prescence of the holy spirit. |

5 | Why not Brothers? | 1 Cor 11:3 | Jeff12 | 49794
I used to belief in the Trinity but it was verses like these that started me questioning the basic doctrine of the Trinity. If you believe in the Trinity and want someone to fit this verse into the Trinity doctrine I'm sure they'll have some kind of explanation that might help you do that. In the OT God said He is "one God". Now from other Scriptures He uses the word "three" and "one" so if He really meant "three in one" God then wouldn't He have said so? Jesus said "greater works you will do" so we can do greater works than God? Obviously no. I have debated this doctrine on this forum and I respect a person's right to believe what they want. Do you know of one time where Jesus said somebody was stupid because they didn't believe what he said? Or made snide remarks? I have experienced this here on this forum and when it happens I bow out because I know I'm not going to change someone's mind who is so convinced. To me there is One God, who is Holy and who is Spirit, and God had a Son Jesus Christ. Simple and easily understood. The verse you question is answered very simply with this belief. Even top Trinitarian scholars say "no one understands the Trinity, you have to take it on faith." I fully admit there are many Scriptures that unclear on which belief is correct but there are just too many that are not easily or not explained at all under the Trinity doctrine. At the same time there are, in my opinion, many many verses that are very clear that Jesus Christ is not equal to God therefore the Doctrine of the Trinity can't be right. |

8 | how do we know that verse is accurate? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Jeff12 | 49166
For people who do not believe that the Scriptures are inspired of God there is no "knowing". The one requirement of God places on us is to believe and THEN we shall see. (Not always the case, but the vast vast majority of the time this is true). At some point in my life I believed some Scriptures and I saw that they were true and it gave me more believing that other parts of it were true. As I grew in believing what God says in His Scriptures I saw that He never lies. He always remains faithful to His Word. With the things I have seen and heard I could not be convinced otherwise. This is not to say I believe every single verse so that God is totally fulfilled in me because that is not true. We grow in believing as we believe. It's a paradox but we first must believe and then we see. But when we see is up to God. If you don't believe and want to you can ask God to help you with your unbelief. What do you want to believe? |

9 | accuracy of oral traditions? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Jeff12 | 49154
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, (NIV) You see it doesn't really matter when the actual Scriptures were written down because they were inspired from God to someone who wrote the Scriptures down. So any oral traditions would be meaningless. |

10 | Holy Spirit, holy spirit, or both? | 1 Corinthians | Jeff12 | 48881
I use the capitalized "H" and "S" for God who is Holy and who is Spirit. The lowercase "h" and "s" are for the holy spirit He gave to us when we first believed (born again). The KJV does it this way but sometimes they are not consistent. From John 16:13 we can derive that the holy spirit is a "connection" so to speak. "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." (NIV) It gets its information from God and relays it to us. This "holy spirit" given by God is synonymous with many things Scripturally: truth, power. You might take a look at the word "spirit" in the concordance and see what you come up with. The word spirit is used of devil spirits too but I think you'll see the difference real quick. Essentially we need to know how "our" holy spirit works in us and how we can tap into its power. You can read through out the Bible where the spirit of God worked in His people but that doesn't mean the spirit will work the same way in us. For example, with me it's usually through feeling but at rare times it's a "still small voice" but I'm not going to put this spirit in a box about how it's going to work in me. That's God's job. Not mine. This holy spirit field is one of the most mis-understood aspects of the Scriptures. We have people saying that the manifestations of the spirit listed in I Cor 12:8 - 10 died with the Apostles (original) and yet we have people speaking in tongues today. So first we need the correct doctrine, know from the Bible how it worked in others, and then learn how it works in us. |

12 | Though i speak with the tongues of men | Acts 2:11 | Jeff12 | 48807
Need to? No. But here are Scriptures that say a little of what speaking in tongues does or is. Acts 2:11 "Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God." (KJV) Speak the wonderful works of God. Acts 10:46 "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God." (KJV) Definition of "magnify": 1) to make great, to magnify; metaphorically, to make conspicuous 2) to deem or to declare great to esteem highly, to extol, to laud, to celebrate 3) to get glory and praise Though the person doing the speaking in tongues does not understand what is being said it is speaking the wonderful works of God and magnifying Him. |
