Jesus' words on the cross are a quote from Psa. 22:1. It would appear that in the quote Jesus expresses his sense of abandonment as he suffers on the cross. It would seem to indicate that Jesus was actually "forsaken" by his Father as he bore mankind's sins upon himself. The penalty for sin is separation from God. Jesus was "made to be sin" (or sin offering) for us (2 Cor. 5:21). Our Lord bore the cross alone, even bereft of his Father's presence, for this moment. So his exclamation on the cross, taken from the depths of his being where the Scriptures had been deposited, expressed not only an intense emotion, but the reality of his utter aloneness as the deepest wound borne for our transgressions. | ||||||
