1 | WAS speaking in tongues for unbelievers? | Acts | Hiram Abiff | 22552
Here is a short essay I had to write for composition class. My grade was A plus so it must be right, right? :) Paul's Advice on the Gift of Tongues to the Corinthian Church In today’s church, the gift of tongues are a hotly debated issue. Modern day Christians who practice the gift of tongues need to have an understanding of the purpose, use and importance of this gift. Paul addressed a problem that had developed in the church at Corinth. At Corinth, many believers were practicing tongues at the same time, without interpretation and in a disorderly manner. Paul’s words, “Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?” , suggest that certain gifts were being used as status symbols or signs of great holiness. In 1 Corinthians 14:1-25, Paul addresses the relative importance of the gift of tongues compared to prophecy. I believe Paul used the word prophecy in the sense; ”to teach, refute, reprove, admonish or comfort others while under divine inspiration”. The tongues referred to by Paul are a manifestation of heavenly language. This is opposed to the tongues in the second chapter of Acts, being unfamiliar (to the speaker) human languages given for the purpose of evangelism, by the Holy Spirit. Paul states that the act of speaking in tongues is man’s spirit speaking with God. He also states that man’s mind knows not what his spirit is communicating. Other believers present are not edified because they do not know the meaning of the praise. He believed that tongues were a sign for unbelievers. However, he believed that unbelievers exposed to tongues without interpretation might doubt the sanity of the participants. Prophecy or preaching on the other hand is edifying to the believer and nonbeliever alike. The first duty of Christians of Paul’s day as well as ours is to carry out the Great Commission. Carrying the news of Christ to the entire world should be accomplished using the most effective methods. Paul felt that five intelligible words were more effective than ten thousand words in tongues . Tongues are a desirable gift. Paul states; “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all”. We should use the gifts of the Spirit with wisdom and in the appropriate situation. We must always keep our priorities in order concerning worship and evangelism. |

3 | Why do people lose interest and leave? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hiram Abiff | 22389
Greetings, Although I never was a prolific poster, I did participate in the past. I felt I had to stop for a while because I found myself going to this forum instead of directly to the Bible too often. I guess I am now a passive participant. I read the forum occasionally and gain insight frequently, but frankly, looking at the topics, I still see some of the same discussions continuing (Baptism formula, etc.). God Bless, David |

5 | How's your relationship with God? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hiram Abiff | 10515
Hi Ben, My job requires me to deal with small businesspersons every day. Many of these are dishonest, greedy and back-stabbing. I usually pray for patience, wisdom and a long-suffering attitude. In the mornings I do not kneel and pray, but pray as I drink my coffee, usually on the back patio. I also try to read a chapter of Proverbs every morning for wisdom. My wife and I made a commitment to spend an hour or so in Bible study every day. Sometimes we do not study, but we are getting better at keeping this commitment every week. The end of my day includes reading a chapter of Psalms for courage to carry out God’s will in my life. At bedtime my wife and I usually kneel together, hold hands, and pray. Sometimes these prayers can be quite lengthy depending on what is going on in our lives at the time. I find the more I pray and study the Bible, the more I want to pray and study the Bible. |

6 | Can we now crown Him as Priest and King? | Heb 2:6 | Hiram Abiff | 7995
Ray, You asked for my answer to this question on another thread. This question may be over my head as I am still an infant in Christ, but it is food for thought. My interpretation, What is man : Thou hast made Him for a little while lower than the angels Or the Son of Man : Thou hast crowned Him with glory and honor The rest refers to the Son of man. |

7 | What is the Word-Faith movement? | John 10:27 | Hiram Abiff | 7844
I am no expert but a quick search for quotes from movers and shakers in the movement brings up this and a lot more of the same. Kenneth Hagin asserts, "Man…was created on terms of equality with God, and he could stand in God’s presence without any consciousness of inferiority…God has made us as much like Himself as possible…He made us the same class of being that He is Himself…Man lived in the realm of God. He lived on terms equal with God…The believer is called Christ…That’s who we are; we’re Christ!" (Kenneth M. Hagin, Zoe: The God-Kind of Life (Tulsa, OK: Kenneth Hagin Ministries, Inc., 1989), 35-36, 41. · Hinn made the following statement, "Man, I feel revelation knowledge already coming on me here. Life your hands. Something new is going to happen here today. I felt it just as I walked down here. Holy Spirit, take over in the name of Jesus…God the Father, ladies and gentlemen, is a person; and He is a triune being by Himself separate from the Son and the Holy Ghost. Say, what did you say? Hear it, hear it, hear it. See, God the Father is a person, God the Son is a person, God the Holy Ghost is a person. But each one of them is a triune being by Himself. If I can shock you—and maybe I should—there’s nine of them. Huh, what did you say? Let me explain: God the Father, ladies and gentlemen, is a person with his own personal spirit, with his own personal soul, and his own personal spirit-body. You say, Huh, I never heard that. Well you think you’re in this church to hear things you’ve heard for the last 50 years?" (Benny Hinn, Benny Hinn program on TBN (October 3, 1991). "So if we decree or affirm unwaveringly, steadfastly, we hold God by His own unalterable laws to do the establishing or fulfilling. . ." Lessons", Cady, pg. 52 |

8 | Scripture is clear, right? | Acts 11:1 | Hiram Abiff | 6931
Thanks for the warm welcome. I am actually a redneck from Katy TX. The screen name came from a running joke on another board about the Freemasons trying to take over the world. The practice is not so much a ritual as a tradition I suppose. It seems to be done through over-enthusiasm, but with the sincere desire to win souls for Jesus. I should have made my point clearer. I feel that focusing intensely on one gift or feature of salvation and the wonderful “Jesus experience” can be so counter productive as to drive a person away from Christ. (Other interesting features of this doctrine, men may not wear short sleeves or have facial hair. Women cannot cut their hair, wear any makeup or jewelry including wedding rings. Television, G rated movies and the Internet are all sins. Etc., etc.) Being a new Christian that counts his time in the church in weeks, and has little bible knowledge, I am very grateful for this board. Of course I realize that not everything I read here is correct or accurate, but it is still a blessing for a young Christian. Christian, Husband, Texan, American |
