1 | Why is tithing yet preached today? | Lev 27:30 | Got it!!! | 94812
Tithing is not a requirement - it is an honor. In fact, giving a mere 10 percent doesn't give God the credit He deserves for providing work for us and for what His work on the cross did for us. Many people try to justify their greed by claiming the 'old covenant' argument (not saying that is what you are doing) that we don't have to b/c the law has been fulfilled - tight wads all of them. They aren't under a curse or anything but they just don't understand what a real joy it is to give back to the One who gave all to us.
2 | Searching for the truth | John 1:2 | Got it!!! | 94513
Good question and one that is quite difficult to answer completely as there are some things that the human mind cannot quite comprehend. To answer this I am turning to an exerpt from a book by AW Tozer called "Knowledge of the Holy". It reads as follows: "A popular belief among Christians divides the work of God between the three Persons, giving a specific part to each, as, for instance, creation to the Father, redemption to the Son, and regeneration to the Holy Spirit. This is partly true but not wholly so, for God cannot so divide Himself that one Person works while another is inactive. In the Scriptures the three Persons are shown to act in hamonious unity in all the might works that are wrought throughout the universe. In the Holy Scriptures the work of creation is attributed to the Father (Gen. 1:1), to the Son (Col. 1:16), and to the Holy Spirit (Job 26:13 and Ps. 104:30). The incarnation is shown to have been accomplished by the three Persons in full accord (Luke 1:35), though only the Son became flesh to dwell among us. At Christ's baptism, the Son came up out of the water, the Spirit descended upon Him and the Father's voice spoke from Heaven (Matt. 3:16, 17). Probably the most beautiful description of the work of atonement is found in Hebrews 9:14, where it is stated that Christ, through the Eternal Spirit, offered Himself without spot to God; and there we behold the three Persons working together. The resurrection of Christ is likewise attributed variously to the Father (Acts2:32), to the Son (John 10:17, 18), and to the Holy Spirit (Rom. 1:4). The salvation of the individual man is shown by the apostle Peter to be the work of all three Persons of the Godhead (1Pe. 1:2), and the indwelling of the Christian man's soul is said to be by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-23). The doctine of the Trinity, as I have said before, is truth for the heart. The fact that it cannot be satisfactorily explained, instead of being against it, is in its favor. Such a truth had to be revealed; no one could have imagined it." I hope that helps a bit - it is but a couple paragraphs from a whole chapter discussing the Trinity. I would highly recommend the aforementioned book - it is relatively short but one increadible read! ISBN #: 0-06-068412-7 Phil |

3 | Dietary Law Today | 1 Cor 8:1 | Got it!!! | 94160
In your message you requested, "Any help from a "qualified source is appreciated"; therefore, I trust a scriptural response will suffice. Check out 1 Timothy 4:1-5. Anyone telling you to abstain from certain foods for 'biblical' reasons is not adhering to the Spirit, but listening to decieving spirits and things taught by demons (v.1). There is no 'biblical' reason to abstain from certain foods if you accept it with thanksgiving. This is as direct a statement releasing you from "dietary law" as you are going to find in scripture. It goes on to say in v.16 to "Watch your doctrine closely...". If a person has other reasons to abstain from foods, so be it. But "Dietary Law" is just plain rediculous in light of the sacrifice. You said, " I do not wish to take Jesus' sacrifice in vain". That is good - shows your heart is in the right place but don't you think that adhering to the letter of a law that he died to fulfil takes his sacrifice in vain just as much as living a lawless life? Live in love and you will fulfil the law. Adhere to the spirit of the law (love) - not the letter. God has already blessed you, Phil |

4 | Are all sins equal and delt with the sam | Matt 5:28 | Got it!!! | 94125
Got some good news for you friend - sin has been dealt with. The cross destroyed the power of sin. God does not have a problem with sin - He has a problem with people not knowing His son.
5 | Is lusting after wife sin? | Matt 5:28 | Got it!!! | 94121
To lust was to desire something that you cannot righteously have. In light of this I do not believe one can 'lust' after ones wife. You can have all the fantasies about your wife you want (as long as it doesn't involve other people or perverse behavior) - better her that the floosie down the street. Maybe that is why God gives men wives - so we will have a place for our sexual energy to be directed.

8 | Defending against lust | Matt 5:28 | Got it!!! | 94120
I don't think there is a 'special' verse that is going to 'magically' remove all the lustful thoughts in your mind. The only thing I can tell you is this: Don't concentrate on conquering sin - it has been conquered for you already. When Jesus said "It is finished" - He meant it. Sin has been defeated and you are free. Accept that as reality. You have been crucified with Christ. It doesn't make sense to keep praying "God help me to beat this thing" - when it has already been defeated. You see, God's problem is not with sin - it is with people not knowing His Son. Concentrate on getting to know Jesus more. Read the Word, spend time in prayer and, just as importantly, SHARE YOUR FAITH!!! Be active in your pursuit of God (The Pursuit of God by AW Tozer is an excellent book by the way) and your relationship with Him. Here is a practical application for you. Recently I took up downhill mountain biking. Now, when I first started, my tendancy was to look where I didn't want to go and you know where I would end up? Exactly where I was looking. Unfortunately for me that was usually down the side of a steep embankment - ouch! I quickly learned that if I wanted to stay alive and healthy while pursuing this activity, I needed to train my eyes on the place where I wanted to go - like the path in front of me - not the cliff beside me. Once I started doing this I fell less and less. Now, I still fell and still do sometimes but it's getting less and less. Get my point? Also, keep in mind that you are a work in progress. This is no excuse to sin but just keep things in perspective. Your heart is obviously in the right place as you don't want to lust - just pursue your relationship with God - the rest will take care of itself. God has already blessed you. |

10 | Where does Scripture say Christians... | Matt 24:11 | Got it!!! | 94116
I agree Hank - the whole "Name it and claim it" thing has been taken waaaaayyyyy to far. We need to understand what belongs to us 'in Christ' - but we certainly don't 'name it and claim it - that is just rediculous and breeds greed and selfishness. God owes man nothing - He has already given everything to us - we already possess every spiritual blessing there is to have in Christ - what else is there for God to give? Your statement, "...robbed God of his sovereignty and placed man in control of his own destiny", I differ in opinion a little. I agree that God is sovereign and ultimately His will will be accomplished (it already has been after all - we just exist in linear time and it hasn't passed for us yet), but in a way man does have control of his eternal destiny. God, in His grace, has allowed our faith to save us and we know that it is not God's will that any perish - but some will. Therefore, it can be said that God's choice of us only lays hold of us through our choice of Him - that is why He says, "Choose this day who you will serve." He has chosen us - He has done everything - It was all finished at the cross (actually, even before then - the cross just revealed it to us) and now the choice is up to us - do we accept Christ sacrifice or do we deny it and reject the only atonement for sins made available to a fallen mankind. |
