If it is impossible to lose your salvation, why did Paul warn Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:1 "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils; In order to depart from something you must first be in it. Judas was one of the disciples, who went out and preached the gospel and rejoiced because the devils were subject unto him, and Jesus responded "rejoice not in that the spirits are subject to you but rather rejoice for your names are written in Heaven." Luke 10:17-20 17 ΒΆ And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. Also consider Jesus' promise not to BLOT out the names of the Sardis belivers. Why would this be a promise that Jesus needed to make if it was impossible to happen anyway? Revelation 3:2-5 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. We must be careful of the eternal security doctrine, because it can leave a person with a false sense of security. The grace of God will indeed be longsuffering, and if a person backslides they have to go over many road blocks that Christ sets up. God has also given us all the power we will ever need to make it, and every gift of his Spirit to help us overcome. However if any man willfully turns from Christ, he will eventually "depart from the Faith". It is they that endure until the end that shall be saved. Matthewt 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. |
