1 | Can anyone speak in tonges | 1 Cor 13:1 | Darling1 | 147577
1Cor 12:11 teaches us that the Holy Spirit divides the gifts of the Spirit among the Body of Christ as He wills. 1Cor 12:31 instructs us to desire the gifts of the Spirit, but that there is even something better than having those gifts. As for speaking in tongues specifically, you can ask God for that gift, however 1 Cor 14:12 and 13 gives further instruction as to what our motives should be. Keep on seeking after Him alone and He will lead you and guide you into ALL truth. Read Prov 3:5 and Psalms 139 that you may be secure in the knowledge of His enduring care for you as you trust in Him. |

2 | Please explain 1 Cor 4:18-21. | 1 Cor 13:1 | Darling1 | 147576
The entire thrust of Paul's letter to the Corinthians was to lead these "babes" into a deeper knowledge of the power of God...I Cor 12:31 "...I show you a more excellent way". This power is defined in Chapter 13 as Love. Contrary to our natural thinking, the power Paul referred to in I Cor 4:18-21 was not pushy or showy, rather he would look for the characteristics of Love in the persons who were attempting to teach the Corinthians contrary to the doctrine that they had received from Paul. Knowledge alone is not enough, spiritual gifts are not enough. The process described in Rom 5:3-5 (tribulation works patience, patience works experience, experience works hope, and hope - love) is the culmination of Christ being formed in us. The mature one in Christ will have more than words, he will understand in the way Paul describes in 1Cor 13:12. When Paul arrived in Corinth he would be able to clearly expose the motives of these teachers. The very next verse describes some of the sins being tolerated by these same people. Hope this helps!
