1 | Info on Church of Christ | Acts 2:38 | ACUYFM06 | 72389 | ||
Hi! I am a member of the church of Christ, and judging from the other three posts, the only one to answer your question, so here it is from the inside. The c of C has long had a bad reputation for condemning those of other denominations to hell. Granted, there are people, and even factions within our brotherhood who feel this way, unfortunately. One of the other posts got most of it right...the church of Christ has its roots in the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement of the latter part of the 1800's, which was a plea for the church to return to the Bible. It was a unity movement, but of late, the results have been disheartening. The plea for unity that was supposed to echo Jesus' prayer in John 17 has essentially backfired. You see, churches of Christ are autonomous, meaning that each is run by a set of elders, not by a central organization. Many churches get different ideas, and dissension occurs. Meanwhile, on the interdenominational front, others on the outside looking in see a hypocritical church who wants unity but can't have it within itself. At the same time, there are those who condemn others. However, on a positive note, there are a growing number whose philosophy seems to be, "Build bridges where we can, and draw distinctions where necessary." Yes, the church of Christ IS a Christian church -- very much so. We do believe in biblical water baptism for adults, and some references in that article are very superficial. I would be very happy to discuss them with you, and promise to keep an open mind. We also use a capella music in worship, and there are NUMEROUS other differences. Each could be expounded upon with a doctoral thesis. I am a freshman at Abilene Christian University, run by the c of C, so I still have much to learn, but would be happy to discuss these topics or any other related topics with anybody who is interested. My email is rlb02a@acu.edu Thank you for you time RLB |
