1 | What was Jesus writing? | John | gforceministry.com | 104026 | ||
I don't think He was doing either of the two things listed in the question although no one can be absolutely certain of what was written. Many Pastors and teachers have offered a significant variety of possibilities but I would like to provide a perspective that I hope you will find interesting. The scribes and Pharisees approached Jesus to challenge Him in the hope that they might find opportunity to discredit Him. They come to Him quoting the law in order to use it as a means of tripping Him up. As Jesus writes on the ground with His finger the scribes and Pharisees would have done well to recognize that with this very same finger Jesus wrote the law that they try to use against Him. Jesus is not caught of guard, but with decorum He writes on the ground with the same finger that wrote the law. They challenge His authority, continuing their refusal to acknowledge the evidence that Jesus has provided up to this point which points to His being the promised Messiah. Trying to challenge His authority they don't realize that He is the Authority. Exodus 31:18 18 And when He (God) had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. Deuteronomy 9:10 10 "Then the LORD delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. These verses make it clear that with His Finger, God wrote the law. As Jesus calmly writes upon the ground, the Jews just don't get it ! Jesus again displays His ability to stay above the fray. The devices of evildoers pose no danger to our Lord. Mike Welte / gforceministry.com |
