1 | A New Perspective!??! | Bible general Archive 2 | Reighnskye | 132676
Country Girl, This makes a good amount of sense, insofar as thoughts themselves are recorded within the brain as visual/audible imprints. There are three visual/audible imageries that run simultaneously in the brain at any one given time during all of our conscious waking states. Our eyes and ears function as a continual tape record, so to speak, much like a movie camera. Sights and sounds are recorded in our brain in tiny data bits, which are later replayed with appropriate memory triggers. Further, as we remember words, any such actual word is stored away as a picture and a sound in our brain. Unfortunately, I still don't know what "Paomnnehal" means, as per your title. 4 | trumpet-God's voice or instrument | Ex 19:16 | Reighnskye | 132755
I was taught by my pastor when I was younger that the trumpet of God was a war device used to send troops into a war. Here are a few verses on trumpets. - Exodus 19 16 So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder. (NAS95) Joshua 6 15 Then on the seventh day they rose early at the dawning of the day and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day they marched around the city seven times. 16 At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout! For the LORD has given you the city. 17 "The city shall be under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to the LORD; only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. 18 "But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things under the ban, so that you do not covet them and take some of the things under the ban, and make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it. 19 "But all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to the LORD; they shall go into the treasury of the LORD." 20 So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city. 21 They utterly destroyed everything in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword. 5 | Homosexuality, sin or not? | Lev 20:13 | Reighnskye | 132714
LibertyBelle, Here are some classic verses on homosexuality. The bible does indeed make specific references to it. Le 20:13 'If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. (NAS 95) - Romans 1 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. (NAS95) - Reighnskye |

9 | Date or time for an answer to prayer? | Is 38:5 | Reighnskye | 131076
MrsMcCurley :) I'm not precisely aware whether or not God gives a date or a time in answer to prayer anywhere in the scripture. Nonetheless, God is quite specific with a timeframe when He heals Hezekiah after he prays to God. And a specific sign is given in this particular instance as well. ---- Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying, "Go and say to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of your father David, "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. "I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city."' "This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that He has spoken: "Behold, I will cause the shadow on the stairway, which has gone down with the sun on the stairway of Ahaz, to go back ten steps." So the sun's shadow went back ten steps on the stairway on which it had gone down. (Isaiah 38:4-8 NAS95) Reighnskye |

10 | Who is this? | Is 38:5 | Reighnskye | 133935
Hezekiah was granted fifteen years of life in the book of Isaiah. - Isaiah 38 4 Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying, 5 "Go and say to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of your father David, "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. 6 "I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city."' 7 "This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that He has spoken: 8 "Behold, I will cause the shadow on the stairway, which has gone down with the sun on the stairway of Ahaz, to go back ten steps." So the sun's shadow went back ten steps on the stairway on which it had gone down. (NAS95) Isaiah 38 21 Now Isaiah had said, "Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover." (NAS95) - Blessings, Reighnskye |

11 | Can women rule in civil life? Isaiah 3:1 | Nah 3:13 | Reighnskye | 133403
Triumfunt, In the Old Testament, cowardly war soldiers were sometimes referred to as women, who were easily overrun by a foreign enemy. In regards to female roles in civil leadership, some may interpret these Old Testament scriptures as failing to endorse women as strong war tacticians. This may not hold true for civil peace roles however. Nahum 3 13 Behold, your people are women in your midst! The gates of your land are opened wide to your enemies; Fire consumes your gate bars. 14 Draw for yourself water for the siege! Strengthen your fortifications! Go into the clay and tread the mortar! Take hold of the brick mold! 15 There fire will consume you, The sword will cut you down; It will consume you as the locust does. Multiply yourself like the creeping locust, Multiply yourself like the swarming locust. (NAS95) - I further believe that our New Testament references to female leadership are largely cultural in nature. For example, Paul teaches that women shall not exercise authority over a man in a teaching role. Yet women are also resricted from even speaking publicly in church or bearing their heads without a veil. Please take the time to look up the term prophetess and deaconess in the scriptures, as these seem to be vital leadership roles also. In fact, Isaiah's own wife was a prophetess herself, as per this next verse reference. Isaiah 8 3 So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz; (NAS95) - Blessings, Reighnskye |

12 | Outer Darkness? | Matt 8:12 | Reighnskye | 130415
A truly interesting question. My inpression of this verse is that the term "outer" may have something to do with being "outside" of Christ's millennial kingdom (the New Jerusalem) during Christ's millennial reign (or possibly also sometime thereafter). One might ask how "outer" darkness is differentiated from simply darkness. |

Roger, Are you saying that Satan indwells believers? PS. Please whisper. :) This particular verse that you present is likely referring to the world and not specifically to the church. Try these verses instead maybe. They are perhaps more to the point. "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. "I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 14 | the supernatural realm. | Matt 17:21 | Reighnskye | 133051
LSmith, It depends what commands that you are being obedient to. The method of fasting was often in used in scripture to remove the encumbrance of the flesh, wherein physiological changes occured. Basically, the spiritual essence of the Christian already possesses the full gamut of miracle capacity. So nothing changes there. Namely, every true Christian already has the capacity to resurrect the dead, walk on water, etc. in a spiritual context. The obstacle to the physical manisfestation, however, is our physical, fleshly body. Fasting removes this encumbrance, so that our flesh no longer restricts our spirit. Fasting basically deadens our physical sensitivities, and thereby allows increased supernatural sensitivity. However, the method of fasting is seldom practiced regularly today by anyone at the vast degrees that it was used in bible times. Also, fasting does not grant a person salvation, insofar as it is a work. Our modern day organized religion is no longer fluent in this practice. - Matthew 17 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" 20 And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. 21 "But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting." 15 | Are we told how to structure a church? | Mark 3:14 | Reighnskye | 133821
Whitt, I believe that the structure of church government is really a vital issue in our organized religion today, and that the practice of our common day church does not indeed reflect what is taught in scripture. Firstly, it is important to understand that Jesus had set up a very precise structure, regarding appointment of officership within the church. This structure is patterned after the Old Testament political government of Israel, and consists of a crew of twelve and a crew of seventy, as reminiscent of OT scriptures. Please notice here the comparisons between these Old and New Testament verses. Mark 3 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, (NAS95) Exodus 28 21 "The stones shall be according to the names of the sons of Israel: twelve, according to their names; they shall be like the engravings of a seal, each according to his name for the twelve tribes. (NAS95) Matthew 19 28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (NAS95) Revelation 21 12 It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. (NAS95) - After Jesus appointed the twelve, he then appointed seventy more, again after the structure of the Old Testament pattern for the nation of Israel. Numbers 11 16 The LORD therefore said to Moses, "Gather for Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. (NAS95) Numbers 11 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do it again. (NAS95) Luke 10 1 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. (NAS95) Luke 10 17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." (NAS95) - Moses gives us another example of structure, wherein entire national divisions are appointed. There are leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Common secular corporations more efficiently hold to this structure than does the common church. Without this many leaders, the care quality of a group will drop substantially. Exodus 18 21 "Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. 22 "Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be that every major dispute they will bring to you, but every minor dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. (NAS95) Exodus 18 25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. 26 They judged the people at all times; the difficult dispute they would bring to Moses, but every minor dispute they themselves would judge. 16 | Are we told how to structure a church? | Mark 3:14 | Reighnskye | 133822
Whitt, Here are some additional verses with specific qualitative prerequisites for the appointment of elders and deacons. 1 Timothy 3 1 It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. 2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), 6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. 7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, 9 but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 11 Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. (NAS95) Titus 1 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. 17 | With any wealth can we enter heaven? | Mark 10:25 | Reighnskye | 133237
Matthew 19 21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property. 23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 18 | Jesus Son of God ; God ; Spirit | Luke 8:28 | Reighnskye | 130844
This scripture unit had actually been quite instrumental in my own conversion. The lesser powers had indeed been evidenced to my senses directly, so I had no trouble believing in a higher spiritual authority that could subject them. These verses tell me that the title of Jesus as Son of God and Christ are more than simply earthly-originated titles. Jesus holds weight in the supernatural realm as well.
19 | "Bosom of Abraham" a Rabbinical Idiom? | Luke 16:20 | Reighnskye | 131317
Doc, I'm not quite sure if this would answer your question, and certainly there are others more qualified than me on the subject. I've done some readings in Josephus (including your excerpt) perhaps fifteen or twenty years ago, so it's been awhile. I've noticed that there are several Old Testament writings (predating Josephus) that are quite similar to this one here. Many of the ideologies within Josephus's writings are merely borrowed from other ancient source texts. Some of these ancient source texts are remaining and some are extinct. The most notable might be the book of Second Esdras (2 Ezra), wherein an even more detailed set of visions of the heavens and the hells are experienced under the instruction of an angelic messenger. Please check the apocrypha for this book. The NRSV apocrypha is quite particulary good. I suggest that the Catholic belief in purgatory more resembles the Old Testament version of heaven and hell, as was prevalent in many ancient Old Testament era (albeit extra-biblical) texts. I find it to be a very interesting and enlightening study to research what people during Old Testament times believed about the afterlife. This would be to the exclusion of New Testament beliefs on the subject. You would gather some very unique findings. I had spent a few years of my life loosely sorting through about 200 psuedapigraphal texts (approximately 100 OT era and 100 NT era), wherein many of these texts make references to the beliefs of ancient peoples. These ancient beliefs are not otherwise commonly noticed in scripture, without extra-biblical (psuedapigraphal) research involved. - Just a couple of notes on psuedapigraphal and apocryphal writings. 1. I suggest that there are many ancient texts that are 99 percent divinely inspired (except for minor doctrinal inaccuracies). However, if just one verse of a psuedipigraphal text would be deemed uninspired, then it is automatically rejected from the canon of divine scripture as a whole. However, we can say the same thing about any book authored by Billy Graham, Max Lucado, Charles Swindoll or John MacArther, yet we still read them and are greatly inspired by them. They also are not inerrently inspired, and occasionally a paragraph or two will be error-filled. 2. Some psuedipigraphal writings are outright forgeries (albeit ancient forgeries), that have been severely tampered with. Many others, likewise, are merely inaccurate re-writes of now extinct texts. However, even the forgeries will sometimes contain keys to the belief systems of the ancient world (the afterlife for example) that can still add to the richness of our knowledge of ancient culture. Just some thoughts. ---- It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." (Jude 1:14-15 NAS95) And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
