1 | The age Mary conceived Jesus? | Luke 1:27 | Lindy21 | 234697 | ||
Nobody knows for sure how old Mary was when she conceived Jesus. But we can make a reasonable guess. In the culture of her times, a girl was often married by the age of 16. Many arranged marriages took place between a girl at age 14 to 16. This was necessary because of the shorter life-span of people in those times, and also because of the extremely high priority placed on having as many children as possible, and that meant getting an early start. Boys were slightly older when they were considered of marriageable age. The word used (which we translate as 'virgin') in her native language is 'almah'--and it means 'a young woman of marriageable age'--and that age would generally have been between 14-16. So, if we consider that Mary and her family most likely lived in accordance with the customs of their culture, she would almost surely have been under the age of 20 when she conceived Jesus. But, as I said, nobody knows for sure. Source(s): A study of Jewish customs and practices at the time of Christ. There is no verse that gives her exact age. But check Luke 1:27, which uses the word 'virgin' in many English translations, but which is 'virgo' in Latin, which means 'a young woman of marriageable age', and which is itself a translation from the Greek 'parthenos', which is a close approximation to 'almah'--a young woman considered old enough for marriage. I can not find this information right now! I read that Mary was 14 years old when the angel came down from heaven. I believed that I read this article in the Early Church Fathers last week. Mary parents were order to have Mary raise in the church by the priests. Mary was raised by the early church. |
