1 | Ecumenical Movement Avoid or Not? | Bible general | Beja | 239708
Ed.O, This is a difficult question to answer while still remaining true to the intentions of this forum. The forum is very specifically meant to be a place where both catholic and protestant professions are free to come and study scripture together. Your question has another question imbedded within it. The imbedded question asks us to give a blanket verdict on the doctrine of Catholics and those who would join with them. While I would naturally and permissibly disagree with catholics while discussing particular texts on this forum, I think it crosses a line to simply discount their beliefs. It invites argument in the absence of working on particular passages. In respect to the intentions of this forum I will not answer that imbedded question but I will state this: Evangelicals still preach salvation through faith alone, and Catholics still argue some other merits are necessary in addition to Christ. In that sense, I do not understand what they could actually mean when they suggest the reformation to be over. We still disagree on the same things. Perhaps they mean to suggest that we no longer care about those things to the same extent as our spiritual forefathers? In Christ, Beja |

2 | Do the original books exist | Bible general | Beja | 240210
nugtweety, We do not have the original copies of any of the books of the bible. However, there is no ancient document in all of history for which we have more evidence and certainty that we have essentially the original words preserved for us. In Christ, Beja |

5 | Why "only begotten GOD" as against "Son | Bible general | Beja | 240833
PeterH, The reason is because different ancient texts vary on this verse. Some of them read son and others read God. It is a matter of text criticism to try and determine which is more likely the original reading. In Christ, Beja |

6 | Yes but why did the NASB choose "God" | Bible general | Beja | 240836
PeterH, A person could list the evidence for one reading verses the other. But only those who actually made the decision can tell you what particular evidence they found the most compelling. I would point you to "A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament" 2nd ed. by Bruce Metzger. On there you will find what persuaded that particular group concerning various textual differences of significance. They determined "God" to be most likely original in that passage and they briefly list why. From there you would need to look into what the NASB's policy was. Did they just accept the other committee's judgement or did they make up their own mind? This you might find in the foreword to you NASB. Best of luck. In Christ, Beja |

8 | Will Israel be destroyed? | Bible general | Beja | 241124
Beviek9, Welcome to the forum. Scripture has a great amount of predictions concerning Israel's destruction. From its very founding in Deuteronomy God promised their destruction (and restoration) if they abandoned his covenant with them. The prophets repeatedly predicted their destruction. And God kept his promise through the Assyrians and Babylonians when they destroyed Israel and Judah respectively. Then they returned from exile. In Christ's day he prophesied again over the coming destruction of Israel and again this came about through a foreign army, the Romans. However, I suspect you might be asking with regards to the current nation state of Israel. If this is so your question will be necessarily tied up with ones view of end times. Therefore the answer you receive will vary dramatically. As for my view, I believe this verse is relevant though I suggest to you that it refers to the church who is the Israel of God. Rev 11:7 When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. I hope this is of some help. In Christ, Beja |

Beviek9, Forgive me. In my haste I copied the wrong verse, I meant to give you this one. Rev 13:7 It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. In Christ, Beja |

11 | Am I Biblically free to marry? | Bible general | Beja | 243735
Brr101373, Greetings. As a Pastor, I find the most difficult questions to answer usually are about marriage. This is not from any short coming from scriptural guidance, but rather it is because of the remarkably implausible situations that people find themselves in by not following the Lord's instructions from the beginning. People come to a pastor and basically ask, "given that I've not followed the plan" what now would the Lord have me do? If you would permit me to make a parable out of thin air, most questions are like a man standing by the lake. A letter from the Lord is brought to him and the courier states, "I have instruction from the Lord that you are to get in this raft and cross this lake." As time passes the man one day decides he ought to obey but he is confused how to do so. He asks the courier, "Sir, I want to know what the Lord would have me do." The courier replies,"I told you." "Yes, but I have sunk the boat, covered the lake with oil and set it afire, and waited until I was too old and infirm to walk around the lake. Now please tell me what my Lord would have me do." The bewildered courier replies, "I just have this letter saying to get in the boat and cross the lake." This is what it is like answering most marriage questions. People have gotten themselves so far from what the word of God said, we no longer have specific instruction from God on what to do. God did not tell us, "Here is plan B and C assuming you reject every command I have first given you." He expects us to follow commands. I do not say any of this to scorn you, but to get you to understand why it will be next to impossible to get clear biblical advice. With that being said, here is my word of counsel in order of importance. First, your chief concern in life right now is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and strength. That should so be your focus that a question of marriage should seem a small thing. This we know for certain is your duty. Second, you need to get yourself in a scriptural church where their chief conviction is preaching, understanding, and obeying scripture. This forum simply can not give the measure of council you need despite how we long to help you. Third, my advice is to not pursue marriage again for two reasons. One reason is that I think one of the principles taught, is that remarrying is only permitted after a divorce that was scripturally allowed. I think your second divorce probably disqualifies you because you abandoned your wife for reasons other than her sexual betrayal. Yes she cheated on you, and that would have given you biblical permission to divorce. But that is not a "get out of marriage free" card you can keep in your pocket for a decade. The other reason is because you are not certain if you would be sinning by marrying, but you are certain that you will not be sinning by remaining single. In Christ, Beja |

12 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | Beja | 243769
Justme, I completely believe that demons are real and that possessions can happen in our current time. However, of all my sermons I have never preached a sermon on the topics of demons. The reason is simple. I believe a preacher ought to strive to preach the point of the text he is preaching. Whatever is the texts main point ought to be my main point. So since I have not yet come across a passage that has as its point to teach about demons, it has never been the thesis of my sermon. Now does scripture contain passages where demons are on display? Yes. But consider it. Even in the gospels the point of the passages containing demons is not to teach us something about them, but usually seek to show Christ as sovereign over all, even them. In other words, even there Christ is the point rather than them. So I think it is well that we don't see many sermons on them. In Christ, Beja |

13 | revelation, inspiration, illumination | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 207251
The difficulty you are going to run into is that people are going to consistently use these words to say different things. What is important is getting straight the ideas they represent. There is one thing in which God makes "new revelation." This is ofcourse often called revelation or with regards to the writers of scripture this was often called inspiration. On the other hand there is the process where God opens our heart to actually understand what has already been revealed in his word. This is often called illumination. However, what you need to understand is that people don't always use the same words for the same things. Some people refer to this process where God helps us understand existing revelation as revelation itself. Ultimately you have to try to understand what a particular person is saying by it. The sad fact is that two people can say the same thing and mean totally different things by it. Keep the concepts straight in your head, and then try to understand how a given person or source is using these words.
14 | What happen when we confess our sin? | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 220600
Tckprncss, First, let's make sure you understand what is the basis of your confession resulting in forgiveness from God. Your sin, and your lie, is not simply overlooked. It took Christ dying on the cross, enduring the punishment for your sin. When we trust in Christ for salvation, what we mean more explicitly is that we are trusting that all the wrath that God ought to pour out on us has been already poured out on Christ. God then, through our faith, credits to us the perfect rightousness of Christ. If you confess and hope for forgiveness based on that, then the blood of Christ truely clenses you from all sin. Now many may read this and wonder why I'm going over something so basic, but the truth is many professing Christians do not understand this and the reason is because pastor's have decided to assume the gospel is clear and they have moved on to teaching other things. However, if you truely are hoping in the finished work of Christ for your forgiveness and rightousness then you still may have a heavy heart as an effect of repentence. I encourage you to read 2 Corinthians 7:10,11. In this Paul lists indignation and longing as two of the marks of repentence. Indignation means that you are loathing your own sin. Longing is referring to your yearning to actually be and walk in a manner consistent with the rightousness God has given you in Christ. So if you truely are trusting on the work of Christ, then I would say to you that longing and indignation over your sin is a good sign, sir. Your hatred of your own sinful actions marks you a child of God. Weep when your heart is indifferent over sin, rejoice when God can make even one such as you into one who longs for the rightousness of God. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. (Matt 5:6) In Christ, Beja |

16 | Did John really baptise Jesus?? | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 223506
Cecilk, Welcome to the forum! John did indeed object didn't he. Mat 3:14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?" So John testified in that to Christ's sinlessness. Though John didn't fully understand what was happening. Though even still, I certainly hope that John's words did apply to Jesus in another way! One might say, how is it that Christ can be baptized for repentence of sins? I ask you also, how is it that Christ was slain for sins? Christ performed all parts of perfect righteousness for those whom He has purchased for the Father. This is what our Lord responded. Mat 3:15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he *permitted Him. Christ did not merely need to accomplish death, He also needed to accomplish everything which the Father expected of you and me. If we say that Christ can not live and work for sinners, it is also a denial that He can die for sinners. But praise God that Christ has not only died in my place (substitutionary atonement) Christ has also lived out perfect righteousness on my behalf! (imputation of Christ's righteousness). And so Christ became our righteousness (1 Cor 1:30). 2Co 5:21 "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." In Christ, Beja |

17 | adultery committed against our own body? | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 223911
Kay, I would be very careful not to missunderstand what the apostle Paul meant by this. He is NOT suggesting by this that other sins hurt people but you are really only hurting yourself by sexual sins. This could lead people to mistakenly believe that as long as they feel alright with sinning against themselves they are free to sin. I think what Paul is trying to say is that sexual sins are in some way especially defiling us in addition to all the normal ramifications of sin. It would take too long of post to explain what exactly I think he is saying, but do at least understand that Paul is presenting this as a more drastic thing not as a lesser sin. In Christ, Beja |

18 | What does it mean to lose ones crown? | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 223988
swill6ky, Do you have a scripture reference that suggests loosing crowns? This really needs some context to answer properly. For some it would mean a metal cap on one of your teeth fell off and for me it's probably in the couch cushion somewhere. Where in scripture does it speak of us loosing a crown? Help us out with that and I think we could answer your question much better by looking at the context. In Christ, Beja |

19 | Jesus doesn't answer me | Bible general Archive 4 | Beja | 224002
mamametal, May you be blessed from the Lord "under whose wings you have come to seek refuge." (Ruth 2:12) Let me say this, if I was personally asked something like this I would certainly not assume it to be an issue that could be resolved in a short time. It seems abundantly clear it is a matter for extended teaching and discipling. Let me ask you some questions. I do not ask these things to make you feel bad or to pick your post apart but rather they all matter a great deal in how to answer you. Do you regularly attend a church? If so what denomination is it? Knowing what you are being taught will help us to know if any mistaken notions drive you to such despair. Are you regularly reading scripture? You say, "Iam saved." How do you know? What are you resting such assurance upon? What is "being saved" in your understanding? When you say that you can't hear Jesus/God, what is it that you mean by that? Do you mean to say that you actually expect to hear an audible voice? Or do you mean that you don't feel particular leadings or convictions? How exactly do you think the Lord ought to be communicating to you? When you say that you want and need something personally, what is it that you mean precisely? When you say that you got a visit from the Holy Ghost, what do you mean by that? By what standards are you deeming that it happened? And what exactly in your thinking are the implications of it? All these things are important for giving you biblical answers. If you wish to discuss it with me, then it might be best if we do so over some e-mails rather than through this forum. This isn't going to be resolved with a few posts. In Christ, Beja |
