1 | When does wrongly divorced rule apply? | Matt 5:32 | tortoise | 129269
In Matt 5:32 whoever marries the unlawfully divorced woman (or man) commits adultery. But in 1 Cor 7:15 the unlawfully divorced may marry again. How do we decide which rule to follow when 2 believers are involved, with neither acting in a biblical fashion? for example: one may leave but the other critisized her into leaving.
2 | Is this refering to the law of love? | James 4:11 | tortoise | 129265
How could I, in judging my brother, break the law, unless it is refering to the royal law of love as in 2:8, for 1 Cor 13:5 says love does not take a wrong into account?
3 | Why would NIV say 500 cubits? | Ezek 42:16 | tortoise | 129263
Apparent discrepancy between NIV and other translation, NIV say five hundred cubits. I have a note in one NIV Bible saying something about the Septuagint. Does anyone know why the NIV would make such a divergent translation?
4 | knowledge of sin needed for salvation? | Rom 6:23 | tortoise | 113712
What do we need to know to be saved? a) Do we need to know that we have sinned and that sin is displeasing to God? Is this sufficient? (Some people see a few external sins but do not see the internal sins and the sick condition of the soul that Jesus spoke of.) b) Do we also need to know and comprehend that sin results in death, judgement and condemnation in order to be saved? c) Failing to grasp the full sense of our sins (a) and/or the result of sin (b), above, is it sufficient to know that Christ died for us and that it was a really big deal and to be assured of His love for us and to hold onto this knowledge? |

5 | have been enabled to fulfill? | Rom 3:31 | tortoise | 113314
Hi Ray, I am getting 2 things from your answer. First from Rom 2:29, that one is not circumsized in the heart by keeping the law but having been circumsized by faith we are now able to keep the law. Mt 5:19 says it is very important to keep all righteousness, that is not sin, and to solemnly point all others in the same direction. There is great urgency in this command. Does not Rom 8:4 say that He has enabled US fulfill the righteous requirements of the law? Rom 8:4 "so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." Have I got your meaning? tortoise |

6 | relationship of OT law and NT believer | Rom 3:31 | tortoise | 113296
Since we are justified by faith without the works of the law, (Rom 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law), then in what sense is the law established in this Rom 3:31?
7 | baptism and salvation | James 2:17 | tortoise | 113323
While there is no condition for salvation other than faith, do you think that it is too strong a statement to say that if someone refuses to get baptized they have not been saved? Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. Rom 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. tortoise |

8 | Meaning "dead faith" doesn't save? | James 2:24 | tortoise | 112332
James 2:14-24 is discussing the relationship between faith and works. James concludes in v24 saying: "You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only". Does not everywhere else in the NT say that we are justified by faith, not by works? "Not by works of righteousness we have done..." Titus 3:5, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not of works..."? What could James be saying here? Is he saying that "dead faith" and "said faith" do not save, but that only real faith can save you, that is if there is root there will be fruit? And then may we conclude that the root supports the fruit and not the other way around so that we may conclude that we are still saved by grace rather than works so that we don't have Scripture contradicting itself?
