2 | Ruth - Born of Moab or Living in Moab? | Ruth 3:11 | mark d seyler | 176010
Ruth is called "a woman of excellence", or, in other translations, a "virtuous woman". How can this be, if Ruth is in flaggrant violation of the Law: Deut 23:3 "No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the LORD, And what about Boaz, who instructs the reapers to allow Ruth to glean even among the sheaves, and tells them to purposely drop handfuls for her? How does this square with: Deut 23:6 "You shall never seek their peace or their prosperity all your days. How is it that Boaz marries Ruth, while Ezra and Nehemiah have the people "put away" thier Moabite wives? Ezra 9:1 Now when these things had been completed, the princes approached me, saying, "The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, according to their abominations, those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians and the Amorites. Ezra 9:2 "For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has intermingled with the peoples of the lands; indeed, the hands of the princes and the rulers have been foremost in this unfaithfulness." Ezra 9:3 When I heard about this matter, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled some of the hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled. Ezra 10:11 "Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives." Nehemiah understood the law to exclude Moabites - 13:1 On that day they read aloud from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and there was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, Neh 13:2 because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. Neh 13:3 So when they heard the law, they excluded all foreigners from Israel. Neh 13:23 In those days I also saw that the Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. Neh 13:24 As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them was able to speak the language of Judah, but the language of his own people. Neh 13:25 So I contended with them and cursed them and struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. So my question is, if Moses commanded not to allow a Moabite into the congregation of Israel, nor to seek after their prosperity, and both Ezra and Nehemiah confirm that this specifically included marrying Moabite women, how is it that Ruth is excluded from this? How is it that Boaz keeps all points of the Law perfectly, then totally and completely disregards this Law regarding the Moabites? Could it be that Ruth was racially a Jew, while living in the "fields of Moab"? This would seem to fit all the critiria. A "Moabite" woman, in the sense of being an inhabitant of their land, who is racially a Jew? What do you think? Love in Christ, Mark |

3 | From Sowing to Harvest | Mark 4:26 | mark d seyler | 175526
Mark 4 26 And He was saying, "The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; 27 and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows--how, he himself does not know. 28 "The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. 29 "But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." Let's talk about this parable - is the seed the word? Love in Christ, Mark |

6 | Monergistic Invitation? | Luke 22:42 | mark d seyler | 166677
Hi Doc, Thank you for this simplified look at the historical perspectives. This is useful to me. Could you tell me how Augustinianism accounts for Paul's urging, in 2 Cor 5:20 "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." As I understand Augustinianism, man does not do anything involved with regeneration or sancfification until after regeneration is complete. Is that in fact what this view teaches? If that is so, what sense would it make to urge, or implore people to be reconciled to God? Either God would regenerate a person, and they would be reconciled, or God would not regenerate a person, and they would not be reconciled. The New Testament has what appear to be several invitations to come to Jesus. What place do these have in a scrictly Monergistic view? I do not wish to discuss at this time the merits of one view over another. I just want to understand how this particular viewpoint deals with this particular issue. Love in Christ, Mark |

7 | The ingathering of Israel? | Matt 24:31 | mark d seyler | 166066
Matthew 24:31 "And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. Mark 13:27 "And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven. Is this the same gathering prophesied by Isaiah, Jeremiah, and others? Jeremiah 31 10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, And declare in the coastlands afar off, And say, "He who scattered Israel will gather him, And keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock." 11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob And redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he. Isaiah 27 12 In that day the LORD will start His threshing from the flowing stream of the Euphrates to the brook of Egypt, and you will be gathered up one by one, O sons of Israel. 13 It will come about also in that day that a great trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and worship the LORD in the holy mountain at Jerusalem. Isaiah 11 11 Then it will happen on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, And from the islands of the sea. 12 And He will lift up a standard for the nations, And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth. Why or Why Not? Love in Christ, Mark |

11 | What do you think? | Deuteronomy | mark d seyler | 147207
Why do you suppose we choose some questions that have already been asked to just answer, and some questions that have already been asked to use as a launching pad for sarcastic chat-room posts? With over 100,000 posts on this site, would it be fair to say that probibily 80 percent or more of the questions people ask have been asked before? Is it beyond our grasp to think that we might consistantly answer in love and respect? |

12 | Partly under the Law? | Col 2:14 | mark d seyler | 146104
Thank you, Kalos. I haven't heard that view of this verse before. I had understood the "handwritten dogma" to refer to the tablets of stone. We could never keep them, so they were against us as an accusator. Do others on this forum agree with Michael Morrison's view? But to follow up on my original question, I have read posts that say parts of the Mosaic Law were fulfilled by Christ, (i.e. the ceremonial, or sacrificial), and other parts were left to stand. Does anyone have a comment on this? |

13 | Under part of the Law? | Col 2:14 | mark d seyler | 146101
Col 2:14 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;" Where in the Bible does it say what part or parts (i.e. ceremonial law, sacrificial law) of the Mosaic Law were were fulfilled by Christ, and what part(s) we are still subject to? |

14 | eisegesis and exogesis? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 145118
How does typology fit within the realm of eisegesis and exogesis. I hear some forum members speak of eisegesis as something not be be done, but where is the line to be drawn? In Genesis 22, for example, it seems perfectly obvious that there is the comparison to be drawn between Abraham and our Heavenly Father, and between Isaac and Jesus, yet nothing in the text actually says this. If I understand the term correctly, eisegesis is to read into the text something that is not actually written. But isn't this sometimes correct to do? What do you think? |

17 | Were angels created on day 2 or 3? | Prov 3:5 | mark d seyler | 128751
Ps 104: 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2 Covering Yourself with light as with a cloak, Stretching out heaven like a tent curtain. 3 He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters; He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind; 4 He makes the winds His messengers, Flaming fire His ministers. 5 He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever. 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains. 7 At Your rebuke they fled, At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away. Job 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5 Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? 6 "On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy? On the first day, God created light, and separated the light from the dark. Gen 1:3-5 On the second day, God created an expanse in the midst of the waters, Gen 1:6-8 On the third day, God gathered the waters below heaven, and dry land appeared. Gen 1:9-10 God tells Job that the angels were there when He laid the foundation of the earth. Psalm 104 parallels the creation, with vs. 2 the first day, the creation of light, vs. 3 the second day, “lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters”, and vs. 5-7 the appearing of dry land. In between vss. 3 and 5, it seems to be speaking of the creation of the angels after or at the end of the 2nd day, but prior to “establishing the earth on its foundations”. Does anyone have any comments on this? Love in Christ, Mark |

18 | Generation or Race? | John 5:19 | mark d seyler | 127744
Hi Steve and Fatherof4, When I have studied this passage (Luke 21), it seems that "generation" could also be translated as "race". This would mean that Jesus could have been saying that the Jews would not disappear until all is fulfilled. Does anyone have any information on this? Love in Christ, Mark |

20 | What is your take on Westcott and Hort? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 124305
I've been following the discussion regarding KJV vs. other translations. There has been a lot of good material presented. What is your take on the Westcott and Hort Greek New Testament. How widely used has this NT been in translating our modern versions. What about Westcott and Hort's well documented disdain for God's Word, and their background in the occult? I absolutely believe the infallability of God's Word, and that He will protect it against tampering, and will maintain the integrity of His message.
