1 | Which Philip is described in Acts 8? | Acts 8:14 | Shelley H. | 32050
I have a question about Philip in Acts chapter 8. Verse one says that all believers were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria EXCEPT THE APOSTLES. Then it describes Philip preaching in Samaria. At first I assumed that this was Philip, the apostle. But, looking at the context that the apostles stayed in Jerusalem and then in verse 14-15 where it says that "when the apostles heard Samaria received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit." Looking at this context it appears that Philip might not have been an apostle or else he would have been in Jerusalem (vs 1) and they wouldn't have had to send for apostles, Peter and John (vs 14-15). I was wondering if it could have been the same Philip that is mentioned in chapter 6 in the list of men chosen for distribution of food. That is the same list that includes Stephen, who is the focus of chapter 7 -- all very close in context to each other. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Thanks, Shelley |

2 | Insight on receiving the Holy Spirit | Acts 10:44 | Shelley H. | 32045
Some people believe that in order to recieve the Holy Spirit certain things must happen (i.e. laying on of hands, manifestations of the spirit). As I have been studying the book of Acts, it appears to me that God gave the Holy Spirit to different people in different ways. Acts chapter 10 is a great example of how the Holy Spirit comes to the first Gentiles without any human intervention. I am realizing that as humans, we want to make the Holy Spirit understandable and sometimes "put Him in a box" saying that things must happen this way or that way. I am searching for a better, more clear understanding of how the Holy Spirit comes to believers initially. Acts 2:38 says it is a gift for all who the Lord calls to himself. Acts 5:32 says that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him. Does anyone have any insight from the scriptures on this topic for me? Thanks! Shelley |

3 | Any biblical answers to Mormon beliefs? | 1 John 4:1 | Shelley H. | 30950
I have a close family member who is a leader in the Mormon church. He gave us a lot of material on their beliefs to read. There are a lot of rabbit trails we could disagree about, but I want to get to the heart of what they believe and be able to give biblical examples of the truth. Does anyone have good, sound biblical answers for me? I have been doing a lot of study in this area on my own, but would appreciate any wisdom that I can get. Thanks, Shelley |
