Mom - Sunday School teacher - way back when doesn't attend church anymore. people "turned off" by organized religion. This latter statement -- said to me by someone I go to class with. I read bible stories to my children. My children know that I am very much into my bible. Well, I use to be anyway. turned off by people religion. This was one reason I left the Church of the Nazarene. I now attend the Lowell Assembly of God, friend, Jean , goes there. that I wish I had been somewhere else. But I am glad it is behind me.I got double prints. thinking about giving the HIndu TEmple some of the pictures. I am wondering if I really want to go back to the Temple. The other thing would be if the Church wanted some of my pictures of educational purposes. I am not sure exactly how good my report is. concentrate on architecture, how we felt, colors, smells, and our experience. We needed the address where the temple was. I had two photo albums in class. One I passed around the class. The other I kept up front with me.We also were told to bring in some things of our religion. I brought in two bibles. King James Version. Revised Standard Bible. copywright was 1901. I also brought in two hymnals. I only passed out one. Pilgrim Hymnal. And I had a combination hymnal / story book from "Ideals" . This book not only put in popular hymns, but gave the story behind each hymn. nice pictures. membership book from when I belonged to the Church of the Nazarene. Although I didn't become a member. And some information pamphlets on the Lowell Assembly of God. There were two reference books. Crudense Concordance. I usually like my Strong's. Vine's . (I am to lazy to put the full name of the dictionary.) Isn't that awful. Some of these I passed out in class. Others I did not.So I am at the halfway point in the class. Our class has dwindled down a bit. Last week we had seventeen students attend. This week it was only ten. I don't know how many students we originally had in class. But like I said, the class has dwindled down.I have a research paper do. I am thinking of doing it on Confucianism. But I don't know what specifically. I was thinking of a broader subject. Which was on woman rights. But that would engulf many religions and might be too broad. Next time we have class I need to come up with something. My book report is on a "The Tao of Physics An Exploration of the Parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism by Fritjof Capra". I got the book and the CD. I was playing the CD in the car on my way to work. Like chapters in a book.I was thinking I wanted to cover some of the subjects in the my "REligions of the World book" that we weren't covering in class. That way I would have some knowledge of different things. This course is now causing a lot of controversy.Someone in the class today didn't seem to understand that Protestants don't do the sign of the cross. Also, they were telling me that in the old testament there wasn't a heaven. I told them that there was always a heaven. That the devil fell out of heaven and brought one third of the angels with him. She was trying to bring up the idea of purgatory. Something Catholics believe in but Protestants do not. And she was trying to say that there was some sort of purgatory in the old testament before Christ was crucified.Perhaps I am not grasping a concept here. But if I can ask a question without getting into too much trouble, I will procede to do so.How were people judged in the old testament? What is the concept of heaven and hell? |

2 | What does a demon do? | 1 Cor 10:20 | Lon3RB | 184581
The orginal question was "What is a demon?" My first definition of a demon was "A being the prevents you from getting what you want." That came from my "Religion of the World Class." Not to beg the question. But the original discussion was between me and my professor. She thought it had something to do with sin. But demon is not sin. Then we went the route of disease. Then I told her it was a being. She added "A being that prevents you from getting what you want." This came out of her own philosophy. She is a philosopher. And I am sure she has taught this class before. My question is biblical. Doc has done a lot to answer my questions. He has done a good job. The confusion I had wasn't in lacking knowledge in what a demon was. It was in clarifying it. I knew or thought I knew what it was before class. After class I became confused. I didn't think about going to reference books that I had at home. And Doc referred me to sources. However, it dawned on me to look there. This question is actually driving me nutty. Probably because I am concerned about how to answer it on a test. I have done well on my tests so far. ON Hinduism I received somewhere between a 74 and an 80. I don't know what I got on Islam. But I feel that even though we are now studying Christianity that I am still back in Hinduism. I don't know why. What we were suppose to do was study Buddhism next. But Islam goes into Christianity better. I think I have the first part of my question answered. That was what was a demon. You can define demon as a spirit. But the word spirit doesn't necessarily mean demon. That is because of the way spirit is used in the bible. Deity explains demon very well. I think I got that out of the Vine's. So that brought me back to being. The real confusion came with the last half of the statement. "A being that prevents you from getting what you want." There is actually a philosphy in the last part of the statement "prevents you from getting what you want." That comes from HInduism. And the teacher worded the answer that way because her roots are in India. And I gave background on where she was coming from. Maybe the answer was given a while back. Maybe I simply didn't get it. The reason being was because I was tied up in the philosophy while trying to have a biblical discussion. I have taken Intro to Philosophy before. I aced the course. So I am trying to stop my confusion. I was looking for an answer that could blow my confusion clear out of the water. |

3 | Christian philosophy - Only one Path. | Bible general Archive 3 | Lon3RB | 184573
I would like to take a moment to thank Doc. Out of everyone who had answered my question on "What is a demon?" , Doc came up with the best answer. I also thank him for his reference to the "Systematic Thology by Dr. Wayne Grudem." I actually have "The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible." Another book I have is "Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. by W.E. Vine, Merrill F. Unger, William White Jr." Eventually I used my Vine's to find an answer to "What is a Demon?" I didn't look at what Doc had said. But these two really helped me a lot. The full question was "Is a demon a being that keeps you from getting what you want?" Someone had mentioned that if what you want is God, then a demon prevents you from getting what you want. I think I have had a philosophical problem. In my last question I tried to elaborate on this problem. The person that is teaching my "Religion of the World" class is a Jaine. She has roots in India. India is actually big on Hinduism. There are other religions in India. Jaine is a religion. Another word for Atheist. Other religions that live in India are Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. Hinduism looks at them as different paths leading to the same "God." As Christians we recognize only one path. That is the path through salvation. Islam and Judaism are a lot closer to Christianity than Hinduism. As a matter of fact, Hinduism and Christianity are a far cry from eachother. Hinduism is polytheisitic (they have many gods). Christianity is Monotheistic (one God). There is no salvation in Hinduism. Hindu's believe in reincarnation. ONe big question in Hinduism , which is also a philosophy is "What do people want?" What we think we want is different from what we truly want. |

4 | Clearing up philosophical confusion | 1 Cor 10:20 | Lon3RB | 184570
The original question was "What is a demon?" This was first presented in my "Religion's of the World Class."At first she was connecting it with sin. But I knew that a demon was more than sin. I brought up Epilepsy. Strong's references Matthew 17:14-21. So the teacher wondered if demon was disease. I told her that wasn't it either. My last comment was that a demon was a being. The response was that a demon "is a being that prevents you from getting what you want." There was something inaccurate about that statement. In the Hindu philosophy I learned that the word "Yoga" in Hinduism actually means Yoke. Hindu's believe there are four paths to God. Christian believe there is only one. Christian's believe the path is straight and narrow. Christian's believe in salvation. t. Think for a moment about these four paths in Hinduism. For the reflective person, the path of knowledge. This is called jnani yoga. So in my notes I have Learning and Thinking. Under thinking I have prolonged , intensive reflection. I don't want to go too much into my notes. The second path would be for the emotional person. This is the path of love. Also called bhakti yoga. Hindu's believe that Christian's practice this type of yoga. The idea is to love with all your heart. Simply love. The third yoga was for the active person. It is the path through work. This is found in your daily chores and your job. You literally seek God out in your work. This type of yoga is called Karma Yoga. Karma also has another meaning. It is a philosophy within itself. "What comes around goes around." So if you do something bad to someone it will come back to you. And Hindu's believe in reincarnation. So they believe if you don't get it in this life, you will in the next. On the other hand if you do something good to someone, that will also come back to you. So you can have good and bad karma. The last path is a scary one. It is for the experimental person. Someone with a scientific bent. The book actually brings out experimenting with the mind. But they do this through the body. This is the psychophysical. It is called Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga has eight steps or "limbs" to it. I will only mention three. The first is to abstain from certain things. For example lying. The second is to observe certain things. For example cleanliness and purity. The third step is to keep your body from figiting. This step is posturing. It is the physical yoga we think of as exercise. The fourth step is controlled breathing. Learning to breathe is very important. The fifth step is controlling the senses. You are fully engrossed. The sixth step is concentration. Concentration beyond the unconscious. The seventh step is meditation. Which is on staying focused. And the eighth step is Unity. And on my test I put "to become one with that which you are meditating on." This is what Hindu's believe. They, Hindu's also believe in four goals. There is the "Path of Desire" which is Pleasure and Success. We eventually get fed up with this path and move on to the Path of Renunciation. Under "Renunciation I have Disillusionment and Despair. The feeling that it's not worthwhile to extend oneself. Life hold more than one is now experiencing. There are two signpost of Renunciation. Community and Duty. Will to get versus will to give. Will to win versus will to serve. Faithful performance versus respect and gratitude. What do people really want? On one hand my notes point to being, knowledge, and joy. I also have the "infinite something which has no limits. Infinite being. Infinite Knowledge and Infinite bliss. Then I quoted from the book "The World Religions by HUSTON Smith." the word "Liberation moksha release from the finitude that restrict us from the limitless being, consciousness and bliss our hearts desire. What people really want is Pleasure, Success, Responsible Discharge of Duty and Liberation. That is what Hindu's believe. All this is actual background for the statement which came up in class when discussing what a demon was. The last answer the teacher gave was that "A demon is a being that prevents you from getting what you want." So now we can ask several questions. Does a demon keep you from pleasure or joy? Does a demon keep you from Success? Does a demon keep you from what Hindu's call the "responsible discharge of duty." And lastly does a demon keep you from liberation? It is hard to tie in one philosophy with another. All of a sudden you get confused. I had to go back into my notes to find out exactly what the teacher was talking about. Remember the teacher has roots in India. I don't know if she actually comes from India. But some of her roots are there. So we are getting her perspective. |

5 | What is a demon, spirit, or deity? | 1 Cor 10:20 | Lon3RB | 184576
I had asked the question earlier "What is a Demon?" Many people gave really good answers. I even thought about giving up on this particular website. I decided to ask some evangelists. After thinking about it, I decided to go to the "Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words with Topical Index by W.E.Vine, Merrill F. Unger, William White Jr. This is what I found out under the word Demon from page 157 Demon 1) daimon "A demon," signified, among pagan Greeks, an inferior deity, whether good or bad. In the NT it denotes "an evil spirit." It is used in Matt 8:31, mistranslated "devils." Some would derive the word from a root da--, meaning "to distribute." More probably it is from a similar root da--, meaning "to know," and hence means "a knowing one." Onto page 158 2) Acts 17:18 "it denotes an inferior pagan deity. "Demons" are the spiritual agents acting in all idolatry. The idol itself is nothing, but every idol has a "demon" associated with it who induces idolatry, with its worship and sacrifices . 1 Cor 10:20 Rev 9:20, Deut 32:17 Isa 13:21 34:14, 65 3,11. They disseminate errors among men, and seek to seduce believers. 1 Tim 4:1. As seducing spirits they deceive men into the supposition that through mediums (thos who have "familiar spirits, " Lev 20:6 , 27 they can converse with deceased human beings. Hence the destructive deception of spiritism, forbidden in Scripture Lev 19:31, Deut 18:11, Isa 8:19 "Demons" tremble before God, Jas 2:19, they recognized Christ as Lord and as their future Judge, Matt 8:29, Luke 4:41. Christ cast them out of human beings by His own power. His disciples did so in His name, and by exercising faith Matt 17:20. Acting under Satan Rev 16:13-14 "demons" are permitted to afflict with bodily disease, Luke 13:16. Being unclean they tempt human being with unclean thougahts Matt 10:1, Mark 5:2, 7:25, Luke 8:27-29; Rev 16:13, 18:2. They differ in degrees of wickedness Matt 12:45. They will instigate the rulers of the nations at the end of this age to make war against God and HIs Christ, Rev 16:14 Under Ver "to be possessed of a demon, to act under the control of a demon. Those who were thus afflicted expressed the mind and consciousness of the"demon" or "demons" indwelling them, Luke 8:28, Under Adjective signifies "proceeding from, or resembling , a demon, demoniacal. Jas 3:15" So now for the word Demon I have unclean or evil spirit. So a demon is a spirit. And I have deity. Which makes me believe that a demon is a being of some sort. That doesn't make the demon human. That is not what I am saying here. Question is what is a deity? Also, Does that Deity prevent you from getting what you want? Although I am not sure I should go back to that philosophy. |

7 | Do demons keep us from what we want? | Matt 12:24 | Lon3RB | 184487
Thank you for answering my question on demons. So a demon is an "unclean spirit." I also thought of a demon as an "evil spirit." Part one of this question is that a spirit , then, must be a being. A spirit is a spiritual being. We are human beings and have physical form. Spirits do not take on the same form as humans. Also, they must be a negative force in our lives. I thought that the statement of demons are "beings that prevent you from getting what you want" was actually a loose phrase. And the person who answered my question of "What is a demon" picked up on that. I am going to give you some background on the Hindu religion. I will give you it on there philosophy. This is not just so you can answer my question. It is also so that I can understand where my teacher is coming from. Once again I am looking for a deeper meaning. Hindus believe that people don't really know what they want. As a matter of fact , our first day of class we had to answer the question "What do you want?" I had read the chapter, so I don't know why this question had taken me by surprise. My answer was fulfillment. And quoting from my own writings "Someone else answered happiness. ONe person wanted to stay home. Another wanted to be a good father. Some wanted children. Many wanted success, power, money. I thought afterward "no one answered peace." Those are all material things . But perhaps the question goes deeper, than that . Maybe we don't really know what we want. It was also discussed in class that it is perhaps human nature, or maybe even learned behavior, that moves us to want more and more. The Bible mentions greed. Yet we get the things we want and aren't satisfied. We want more. So the answer lies, "What do you want?" That is what is it that you truly want?" In class while discussing Hinduism, we came up with three things that people really want. These are listed in the book by "Huston Smith called The World Religions" they are Pleasure, Worldy Success, Responsible Discharge of Duty, and Liberation. Liberation in my notes is "release from the finitde that restricts us from the limitless being, consciousness and bliss our hearts desire." In my notes under "Duty" , I have "Will to get verses Will to give. Will to win verses will to serve. And Faithful Performance versus Respect and Gratitude." I feel like I should have been better at taking notes. That way I could explain "Responsible Discharge of Duty " better. Anyway, the teacher is coming from this perspective in class. So when she says that a demon "is a being that prevents you from getting what you want," as loose as the phrase is, she is saying a lot. But she (her name is Mrs Shah) is also saying not what we think we want, but what we "really want." So according to what I have just written, and maybe I should think about this question, how does a demon prevent you from getting "what you really want?" What is a better way of stating this philosophy in Christian terms for better understand and accuracy? Also, I guess I need a better definition of the word spirit. Does it take an actual form or is it an idea? I think it might be a spiritual form. I think of it as a negative force in our lives. Once again this is for deeper meaning. It isn't for debate. If I had a teacher that was a Christian, we might approach this differently. |

8 | What is a demon? | Matt 12:24 | Lon3RB | 184467
I realize that you have a dictionary to look up words on your site. However, this particular question has a background to it. You see I am taking a "Relgions of the World Class." That means that I am discussing different religions. Hinduism and Islam is behind us now. I have already had the tests for those religions. And I am doing fairly well. We are now on Christianity. It may be to my disadvantage or advantage that my teacher has roots in India. She is a branch of the Hindu religion call a Jaine. Anyway, while discussing Christianity we were discussing the spirit world. Which would seem to be either good or bad. For example if you are discussing the Holy Spirit, Archangels, Seriphims or Cheribims, that is an up side to spiritualism. However, if you are discussing demons that is a dark side. We discussed all this. The question came up as to "What is a demon?" When discussing this the teacher brought up "The Seven Deadly Sins?" But is sin a demon. It seemed to me that it was an inaccuracy. Jesus "cast out demons." He "healed the sick." for example if someone had epilepsy , Jesus healed that person. So was a demon sickness or disease. That didn't seem right either. So I told the teacher that I thought that a demon was a being. So she replied to me that a demon "is a being that prevents you from getting what you want." I kind of agreed with that. However, I think there might be some inaccuracy in that statement. I have actually asked my senior Pastor of the Lowell Assembly of God this question about demons. I am using this website to gain a greater understanding of the word demon. I thought I did understand it. I thought perhaps a demon was an evil spirit. Yet it seems like much more than that. I haven't done a search for my question. I figure it is very much involved. So I would like some feedback. It's not that I want to start a debate. I actually want a deeper understanding of the word demon. |
