2 | Understanding the Greek word Porneia | Matt 5:32 | EdB | 237863
I found this write up and would like opinions on it. First let me agree with those who have pointed out that it's the EXCEPTION clause that tends to get all the attention as people look for a loophole to escape their marriage . . . the PRIMARY intent of Jesus was to combat the attitude of many Jewish rabbis in his time, which was that the Mosaic commandment that a bill of divorce be given to the woman proved the legitimacy of divorce itself. It is this that Jesus denies, by showing God's original intention from the account of creation before the time of Moses. Marriage is intended to be permanent. The exception clause is not mentioned in either Mark or Luke. It's worth noticing that when Paul writes to the married believers in Corinth, he also does not mention the exception clause but gives the Lord's command regarding the non-separation of the parties in a marriage (1 Cor 7.10-11). So what does the exception clause mean in Matthew 5 and 19? The Jewish community of that time regarded marriage unions between people of certain blood or legal relationships as a form of incest, and used the Greek word 'porneia' for them. These were the kinds of relationships spelled out in Leviticus 18. These unlawful marriages, so offensive to the Jews, were often acceptable to Gentiles and became a real problem for Gentile converts to both Judaism and Christianity. Strict rabbis required Gentile converts to end those relationships if they were entangled in them; liberal rabbis allowed them to remain in those unions. Jesus is endorsing the stricter view, in keeping with his belief that God's word cannot be altered to suit man's whims. It is this meaning of 'porneia' as incestuous unions forbidden by God that we see again in Acts 15. Once the issue of whether Gentiles were saved by God's grace just as Jews was settled, the Jerusalem church decided to send their decision in the matter by way of a letter to Gentile believers. That letter also included their request that, in order to foster good relations with Jewish Christians, the Gentile Christians abstain from those things which Jewish Christians still found offensive: "You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from [porneia]. You will do well to avoid these things". Here too, I think the word 'porneia' means something more specific than sexual immorality; it again means those unlawful incestuous relationships forbidden by Jewish law but allowed in the Graeco-Roman world. Finally, it is this same meaning of 'porneia' which we find in 1 Cor 5, where Paul deals with this problem: "It is actually reported that there is [porneia] among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife." Again, the issue is not just immorality, but a particular case of incestuous union. Thus the exception clause does not contradict Christ's absolute prohibition of divorce as found in Mark, Luke, and 1 Cor. 7; it deals with the uniquely Jewish issue of illegal and incestuous marriages, which to the Jews were unlawful unions to begin with. |

3 | Is there more needed than Rom 1:18-32 | Jonah | EdB | 232866
I meant to pose this as a question. Tim In the light of your past two answers to my question. Is it safe to assume you would agree that Romans 1:18-32 is not the definitive all emcompassing answer for the question of "what about people that never heard of the Jesus Christ"? |
||||||
4 | Sufficient to lead people to Christ? | Jonah | EdB | 232864
Searcher Again thank you for your response. However I think the question is more complex than finding similar verses. The real question is since Romans 1:18-32 confirms that nature testifies of the existence of God, is nature’s testimony sufficient to guide one to salvation in Jesus Christ? Thus making Romans 1:18-32 the definitive and final answer to the question of, “what about people that have never heard of the Jesus Christ? |
||||||
5 | Is Romans 1:18-32 the definitive answer? | Jonah | EdB | 232862
Searcher Thanks for your responses. Let me now ask you the question is Romans 1:18-32 the all encompassing and absolute answer for the question, "what about people that have never heard of Jesus?" |

6 | Know God but not Jesus | Jonah | EdB | 232847
Okay we now have scriptural proof you can know God but not be saved. Now can we know God and perhaps even think we are serving him but not know Jesus? |

7 | Romans in the light of Jonah does it say | Bible general Archive 4 | EdB | 232813
When the question is asked, "What about people that never heard of Jesus?" Many using an understanding of Romans 1:18-32 say nature attests to God therefore those people are without excuse. The question then becomes if that understanding of Romans 1:18-32 is correct why did God go to such extremes, as seen in the Book of Jonah to send Jonah, to Nineveh to tell them of God? Also we see in the Book of Jonah that God chastened Jonah for his lack of compassion toward the people of Nineveh because Jonah wanted to withhold from them the truth of God. I wonder if the understanding that nature somehow attests to God so that any lack of knowledge of Jesus Christ is without excuse is perhaps wrong. It is very possible to know God but not to be saved or not to follow after God. The Book of James 2:19 tells us the Demons believe and actually shudder in fear of God but that does not save them. I think Romans 1:18-32 perhaps becomes an over simplified answer to a question that when we hold it to the light of all of scripture, it just may be one we really don't know the answer to. |

8 | Why did Jonah need to go to Nineveh? | Jonah | EdB | 232804
With the present atmosphere here on the forum this might not be a subject we can freely discuss however never being one known for shyness I bring it up. In light of Romans 1:18-32 why was in so important for Jonah to go to Nineveh? Many have the understanding of Romans 1:18-32 to be saying that nature testifies of God to point that no one has an excuse not to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. If nature testifies of God to the point they are without excuse then why did God chasten Jonah for his lack of compassion on the people of Nineveh by refusing to go to Nineveh to preach God and His judgment to them? |

9 | Contradictions in Bible Study | 2 Tim 3:16 | EdB | 232519
In a discussion on another subject we explored contradictions that are created within scripture depending on our interpretation of scripture. I think we all agree scripture does not contradict itself. My question is when we come across these situations where apparent contradictions seem to exist how should be handle them? |

11 | What does dead to sin in Roman 6:2 mean | Rom 6:2 | EdB | 228642
What does the term we who died to sin mean? What actually changes in the person life? Are they still tempted? Can they still sin? If the continue in the sin not seeking forgiveness will they be eternally damned? If we say yes to those above answers what is different in a person that is not dead to sin? |

12 | Is sinless perfection possible on earth? | 1 John 1:8 | EdB | 228586
I light of 1 John 1:8 and Romans 7 and the fact that Jesus is our eternal high priest and intercessor should we consider living in sinless perfection a possibility or as goal at which to aim. Can we in fact live sinless lives? I realize we can be forgiven of our sins and when that occurs we are sinless. But can we go through life and never ever commit another sin? If not what verse other than Paul's decision in Roman 7 and this verse in 1 John 1:8 confirms that? Again I realize we should strive and make every effort to reach sinless perfection but my question is can we actually do it in this imperfect body in this imperfect world or will we only reach sinless perfection when were are given our perfect bodies? |

13 | The significance of Communion | 1 Cor 10:14 | EdB | 225436
I have been pondering 1 Cor. 10:14-22 for a while and I wanted some other takes on it. In this passage Paul is teaching on staying away from Idolatery. As you know eating food sacrificed to idols was one of the three prohibitions given to the gentiles by the council of Jerusalem in Acts 15:29. In the 1 Cor passage Paul in his warning to not get involved with idols uses the analogy to communion. In it Paul is saying eating food offered to idols brings us into the similar relationship with demons just as taking communion does with Christ. The Greek word Koinonia used here means communion, partaker, or to form a partnership. I guess you are wondering where I'm going with all of this. Well in Protestant church we view communion as ceremony of rememberance. This is based mostly on 1 Cor. 11:25 nowever this passage in 1 Cor 10:14-22 infers a much deeper meaning of communion. Just as eating food sacrificed to idols puts the eater into a relationship with demons, taking communion puts the participant into a relationship with Christ. It is this relationship and what really transpires in our spiritual lives when we take communion is something I think has been grossly overlooked or at least not fully taught. To the early church all indications are that the act we now call communion had a much richer, much fuller, much more important meaning. In fact Paul in 1 Cor 11:27 warns aboout taking of Communion in an unworthy manner. Many claim this means with unconfessed sin but I when read in connection with 1 Cor. 10:14-22 I now believe it means in an ignorant or manner where we don't realize the full significance of the action. Thoughts????? |

14 | denominations. | Eph 4:3 | EdB | 148727
How do we justify denominations in light of John 17:20-23 (NKJV) 20 "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. Which in effect is calling for unity and says the world will know Jesus is authentic by the unity it sees in the believers. Then we move to 1 Corinthians 1:13 (NKJV) 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 12:25 (NKJV) 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. |

15 | Congratulations Searcher56 | Ps 19:14 | EdB | 146448
Congratulations Searcher56. Searcher56 has just passed the 7000 mark and is the highest contributor to the forum. I think what needs to be NOTED here is the fact that more than half of his contributions has been answering questions. To me this shows his interest in helping people find the right answer rather than pontificating and going “tit for tat” in endless debates. My hat is off to you! I wish my stats revealed I spent more time answering questions than responding to debate. EdB |

16 | My apology to the forum | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 145777
To the Forum Please let me apologize that I filled the forum with 10 posts saying the same thing. I deeply regret I needed to do that but it seems one of the forum members has decided to point to excerpts from the forum in his Web site. Since his web site is promoting his for pay services I view this taking my comments which were given without cost and using them a means to profit from them. I hope the point is made and I don't have to go into the rest of the threads and post a disclaimer. Again I apologize for even involving the forum in this but I felt I had to post the disclaimers in the threads that I was involved in. I hope you all understand my indignation of someone using my comments given here to help others being used then by someone else that charges for his services. Again I ask for you understanding and forbearance. EdB |

17 | Show me scripture that says we can sin | Acts 15:11 | EdB | 143071
Are we getting caught up in a snare set by the adversary? My first understanding of a Christian was person that came to saving grace in Christ as a repentant sinner. There were repentant liars, repentant murders, repentant thieves, repentant adulterers, repentant horse thieves, all had fallen short but had repented and turned to Christ for salvation. Today we try to define Christians as anyone the believes in Christ, they can be liars, murders, thieves, adulterers, horse thieves, anyone that falls short but has come to Christ for salvation. We neglect one word repentant. The definition of repentant is some one demonstrating repentance. The definition of repentance is the process of repenting. The definition of repenting is the process of changing ones thinking based on the regret of having committed past sins. To abjure or recant past sins, to turn away from. Is repentance necessary for salvation? My Bible says it is! Jesus said we must repent. Peter in his first two sermons said we must repent. Repentance and the need for repentance is woven all through the New Testament. Now the question really becomes does a truly repentant person willfully and with forethought continue to lie, commit murder, steal, commit adultery, and steal horses? Can you show me in scripture where it says that? And further can anyone show me in scripture where is says a Child of God washed in the blood can continue to sin with impunity? |

18 | Prayer for those facing Hurricane Ivan | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 132643
I post this as a question so it will stay before everyone for awhile. Please do not respond to this but leave it as an outstanding question until the Hurricane Ivan has passed. Let us all pray for those in the path of the hurricane. I know we have one forum member Norrie which lives in the direct path of the storm. Let us all join together in prayer this evening for her, her family and for all the people that must deal with this storm. Let us pray God’s peace and protection be upon them and asking God to give them the strength to endure this onslaught of nature. Believe me after living through two in the last few weeks I know what these people are going through. I was lucky Charlie was a near miss and Florence was really weakened when it got to me. But they were bad enough and I would dread going through a direct hit.. EdB |

19 | Tell us a little about yourself. | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 128328
Xerxes Your an interesting person and we would like to get to know you better. For that reason I ask that you update your profile and tell us a little about yourself. It seems so cold to communicate with a person without getting to know them. Therefore I'm sure you would want to tell us a little about yourself as a way introduction. EdB |

20 | What is your definition of love? | John 13:34 | EdB | 128258
Xerxes I have no interest in being inquisitioned here by you or anyone else. My words speak for themselves. If you can't figure them out I'm afraid I don't possess the ability to express them in a manner you could. However I find it hard to imagine you and the one or two others find them so un-comprehension-able while I have so little of a problem explaining myself with others in all my other posts on this forum. As for your other questions perhaps since I’m unable to make myself clear to you it would be better to explain how you see “Love” do you see it as emotion or action? To you see it being motivator to good works or do you see it as completion in and of itself? If you say you love your father, what does that really mean? Does it motivate any action in you, does it establish any standard of performance in you? How do you interpret 1 John 3:18 “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” ? To you does this imply that we need to do more than just have the emotion of loving? I hope you will answer these questions since I unable to effectively convey my thinking to you perhaps your able to convey your thinking to me. EdB |
