Ok, I don't know how to respond to the people who responded to me. I'm new to this site. Anyway, neither of you answered my question. I know who the Midianites are. That wasn't my concern. I'm referring to the verses where God commanded them to attack these people. The verse is in Numbers like I said before. What were God's reasons for doing this?

I'm in an anthropology class and naturally they aren't fond of religion, especially Christianity. My professor recently told us of an example of genocide of the Midianites in the Old Testament in Numbers that was supported by God. I just came from a site where I found the verses, but I'm wondering what God's plan was at that time. He wouldn't support that would He? Our professor was saying that they killed all the men and took the women and kids for themselves because the Israelites were having bastard children with them or something like that. What was the real reason for them to kill the Midianites?
