1 | Jesus' sense of humor? | NT general Archive 1 | cwade | 68854
Jesus’ sense of humor? Why did Jesus nickname James and John the “Sons of Thunder”? Our Lord used an Aramaic term: “Boanerges” to refer to James and John: Mark 3:17 and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder"); Was it because of their request in Luke 9:54? Luke 9:54 When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" I apologize if this offends anyone, but I find it somewhat humorous. I know Our Lord had a very serious reason for coming to earth and I would never make light of that. However, it seems that at least on this one occasion during His 3 years together with His disciples, Jesus was being humorous in his choice of surnames. James and John seemed to be somewhat “boisterous” and probably deserving of some good-natured teasing: Mark 10:35: James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You." Then, they tried to put themselves ahead of the other disciples: Mark 10:37 They said to Him, "Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory." They even got their mom to help them out: Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. If I am wrong in finding humor in the name Jesus chose for James and John please chastise me sternly. I find pleasure in imagining that Jesus might have laughed a few times while he was here on earth. If that is in any way disrespectful please point that out to me. |

2 | Why does God deliver SOME from sin? | Ex 34:7 | cwade | 66063
I work with drug addicts and alcoholics. I have known many who accepted Christ and were immediately delivered from the DESIRE for drugs and alcohol (cured of their addictions). But I have known just as many who accepted Christ and WERE NOT delivered from that desire to sin. Why does God "cure" some and not others? Is it a question of submission?

What is spiritual pride? Is it a sin to be proud of one's knowledge of the Bible?
5 | Was Jesus physical body deformed? | Is 53:3 | cwade | 66033
Was Jesus ugly or deformed in some way in physical appearance? Could this be why Mary and the disciples did not recognize him after the ressurection? Was his ressurected/perfected body so much different than his physical body?
6 | Does Is:53:3,4 mean He sufferd deformity | Is 53:3 | cwade | 66042
Thank you and God bless you. I appreciate your well thought out answer. What do you think of Isaiah 53:3,4? Is it at all possible in light of these verses that Jesus' physical body did suffer some deformity?
7 | Are little ones trusting, easily led | Matt 18:6 | cwade | 66477
Charis, could this verse be referring to "small" believers who to some might seem insignificant? By "small" believer I mean people who are very trusting by nature and easily led. Based on the context (in which Jesus was answering the disciples question about who among them was greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven), it seems to me that He was pointing out that even the most simple of people are just as important to God. He was also cautioning against causing those trusting, easily led "small" believers to lose faith. I think this would be in line with His statement about their angels. God has angels available to minister to all people, and the "little one's" angels are just as important messengers in that they stand before God ready to deliver His message and minister to the "small" believer. Just a thought. Forgive the intrusion into yours and Cyclist discussion. It was too intriguing to not comment on. |

8 | What does "perish" mean? | Acts 8:13 | cwade | 69453
What does Peter mean when he says to Simon (the Sorcerer): "May your silver perish with you"? In Acts 8:13, Simon had believed and been baptized: Acts 8:13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. But later, after trying to buy the power of the Holy Spirit from Peter and John in Acts 8:20, Peter rebukes him: Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!" Simon's salvation was already eternally secure, right? So how could he perish? Does the word "perish" here mean eternal separation from God? If so, would that not mean Simon had "lost" his salvation? Also -- what was the gift of God? I always thought that meant salvation through Christ. I thought Simon had already done that which was necessary (believed and been baptized) and had therefore already received the gift of God. For those of us who believe that our salvation can not be lost, how do we inerpret this verse? |

9 | Don't associate with Christians who sin? | 1 Cor 5:11 | cwade | 84653
HELP! I am having trouble reconciling two verses. I have 2 friends who both claim to be Christians. Both say they were saved at age 12. One is a Homosexual male, the other is a married woman engaged in an adulterous affair. In 1 Corinthians 5:11, Paul says: "But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one." But in the book of James, he tells us to turn our brethren from sin, and to do so covers a multitude of sins. How can I "turn them from sin" if I am not to associate with them?
10 | Doubt their salvation? | 1 Cor 5:11 | cwade | 84661
Itiswritten: Thank you for your reply. It sounds as if you doubt the salvation of my 2 friends. I have always been very cautious about doing that. I do pray for them continuously, but I have not been praying for their salvation (they insist they are saved), but for their full repentance and return to fellowship with the Lord. Please clarify for me; do you doubt their salvation? In Christ, cwade |

11 | Does God REQUIRE new believer to divorce | 1 Cor 7:24 | cwade | 66179
If a non-believer has been through three divorces, then remarries a fourth time, and AFTER the 4th marriage both he and his wife get saved and both REPENT of their prior divorces - are they then required to divorce? What if the divorce would hurt their three small children. Does God really want that? Didn't he forgive and FORGET their past sins including the divorces?

13 | Memorization technique (along w/ prayer) | Col 3:16 | cwade | 86238
I have recently begun memorizing SUMMARIES of Bible chapters (along with my individual verse memorizations). For example, I am currently memorizing the book of John in this way: Chapter One: The Deity of Christ, The Witness John, The Word Made Flesh, The Testimony of John, Jesus Public Ministry, First Converts. Chapter Two: Miracle at Cana, The First Passover, etc. I have found this really helps me with context and with being able to quickly locate particular verses. Being new in Christ, I just wanted to share this with other new Christians. I'm sure my more spiritually mature brethren have been using this technique for a long time. Any other Bible study tips any of you have would be helpful!

16 | "Age" of our resurrected/glorified body? | 1 John 3:2 | cwade | 67018
Age of our resurrected/glorified bodies? Does the Bible address (in any way) the "age" of our resurrected bodies? For example if an infant dies at 2 days old, when it's body is ressurected is it resurrected as an infant? Note: This is not an attempt to reopen the so-called "Age of Accountability" issue :-)! |
