Does a person owe truth in every situation? If a man breaks into someone's house, kills the man, then asks the woman if they have any children, is she obliged to tell him "yes" realizing that quite probably he will kill them all? Is it sin against God to possibly protect others in a situation like this by saying "no"? And does that mean that those who hid the Jews during the WW, were sinning against God? In these cases, telling the truth WOULD/COULD bring harm to someone else. Question. Abraham told a half/lie (Gen.20:2)and had Sarah do the same (v.5) for his own self-preservation(v.11). Then Abimelech took Sarah, which was not wrong in those days apparently(v.6-7). Unless I'm missing something, Abimelech is the only one that got in trouble. I don't mean to second guess God, but to me Abraham was the MOST wrong because he did this for purely selfish motives (v.11). According to your idea that lying is always sin, then Sarah also was sinning in submitting to her husband in telling this half/truth and attempting to protect him. And Abimelech was more so the injured party in that situation. Yet God rewarded Abraham with silver, land, and possessions which were basically taken from Abimelech. It would seem that God did justify Abraham FOR his sin in this case. Any thoughts on this specifically? |

2 | believers "slain".... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 11898
Do you have some scripture to back this up? (I realize this is an old one on here, but I just saw it.) The only scriptures that I usually hear anyone use to try to prove it's a biblical thing for believers to be "slain in the spirit" are 1)Acts 9:4 “Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Up to this point Saul was not "saved" but was the persecutor of Christians. He “fell to the ground” before being "filled with the spirit" as shown in Act:s 9:17. Acts 9:17 “And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said “Brother Saul, the Lord who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” John 18:6 “Then --- when He said to them, “I am He.” --- they drew back and fell to the ground.” The soldiers with Judas who were unbelievers, “drew back and fell to the ground”. And Revelation 1:17 "And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, 'Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last'." That verse does not say that John did anything in the spirit, nor that God did anything to make him fall, but simply that he fell to Christ's feet apparently in fear --- since Jesus told him not to be afraid. So I would appreciate any scripture than you have that would prove believers were ever "slain in the spirit". Another question pertaining to this subject. Why would one who has died to self (born again of the spirit) (and was filled with the spirit) need to be "slain (killed) in the Spirit" by God? This strikes me as something that is similar to "holy laughter" and the recurring reverence for angels these days. |

3 | a lie is a lie is a lie... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 11930
A while ago I would have agreed with you one hundred percent that a lie is a lie is a lie, and it's sin. But I believe that when truth will do someone harm it is best to be silent on the subject. I'll explain why. Norrie had a point when she said that the the 9th commandment "Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor" is predominantly what God means when He speaks of "hating a liar". (See Ex. 23:1-2) And Jesus again states "Thou shalt not bear false witness". Paul also states it in Romans. God does not want us hurting one another. Both the Hebrew and the Greek words that are used in those verses mean something deceitful, or offering falsehood which harms another person, or an untruth (without cause), and these same words are translated in other areas of the bible as "lying" "liar" etc. [These [sheqer, shaqar, pseudomartureo]words and their base words are the most common words translated lie, etc.] The verse that says God doesn't lie uses a different word meaning to utter an untruth or attempt to deceive by falsehood. The verse that says God hates a liar uses the word meaning falsifier. All seem to imply that there is intent to do harm by speaking false words. So it would seem that any words that cause harm to another would be "false witness" and therefore sin. Perhaps that is why Abraham was not "punished" for lying, and Sarah too. It was not done to cause harm to anyone else. And in that same sense it would not be wrong to protect the Jews or your children from evil men using such words. You said: Abraham's lie Abimelech is not either. Look at the consequences of his lie (vv 17-18). I'm not sure what you mean in that first sentence, but the consequences of Abraham's lie did NOT fall on HIS shoulders. He was not held accoutable to pay for the lie. Abimelech on the other hand was held accountable for believing Abraham and Sarah's lie though. But I think this has more to do with the ultimate will of God than Abimelech's "wrongdoing". |

4 | Do you think this may be | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12005
Do you think this may be just another attempt by Satan to imitate God? "Slain in the spirit" may be just a very showy way in which Satan attempts to imitate through men what God's words say about "dying to self" or "renewing the spirit"? Satan is a great imitator and mocker. I think the whole "holy laughter" thing may be similar in that it too is an imitation of the real thing -- the joy of the Lord. |

5 | How much authority... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12006
Steve, I realize that there is a structure in today's church systems. But Shannon was not having a bible study in a church building. She was having it in her home. The pastor as an authoritive leader is not the authoritive head in her home. So how far do you think we must carry that pastor's authority into our homes in other areas? Overseeing a body of believers and watching out for their spiritual well-being would not give that person the authority to make all decisions for the individuals in a particular body of believers. Would one need his permission to study as a family as well? I guess I didn't know that anyone thought all groupings that study Bible together are under some other person's authority, pastor or otherwise. I thought God was our central authority when it comes to understanding His Word. Since spiritual things can only be understood by those who are spiritual ... Are we in trouble on this forum for not getting a pastor's permission to discuss or study Bible? :) |

6 | I liked most of what... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12089
I liked most of what Glory777 said too. Except for the part where she implied that I was being legalistic (like the Pharisees) because I suggested that being "slain in the spirit" and "holy laughter" may be from the deceiver. I'd rather stick with biblical teaching and practices as much as possible instead of following or believing practices or doctrines that were added later on by men in any particular denomination. I know that God can do anything, but He does not do everything. Satan is alive and well, and still quite busy deceiving these days. EdB and Glory777, if the flesh is at work in some of the cases as you both mentioned in your churches, do you consider that to be OF GOD too? Or perhaps a better way to phrase that is: IF being slain in the spirit is NOT always of God (at least by some), then is it God's will? If it isn't God's will, is it sin? Could you give me a yes or no answer please, before you expound on the thought? |

7 | Going back to the same old same old... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12090
Hi Nolan, Going back to the subject again. Is Steve also saying that we (men and women in the church) need the pastor's permission to "reach out to others through inviting our neighbors for a Bible study"? I think we have THE LORD'S permission to do that. In fact I think we have His command to reach out to others, whether to invite them to a Bible study or to share the gospel in some other way. So I'm going back again and asking the same old same old. Why would a "believer" need any man's permission or blessing to do just that? |

8 | What is the gospel? | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12107
I'm interested in what any of you consider the "gospel of Christ" to be. When Christ says to go into all the world to spread the "gospel", what do you think He meant by that?
9 | I guess I'm asking because... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12117
Steve, I guess I'm still asking the question because the answer doesn't seem biblical. Can you give me concrete scripture that says anyone (man or woman) needs an elder's permission to study bible in their home (alone or with others) or to share the gospel with others? It seems to me that you have been indoctrinated into "man's religious structure" of the church rather than God's Word in this area. |

11 | A husband's responsibility | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 18681
Could any and all of you please provide sciptures that explain a husband is to "provide for" (work to support) his wife and children? Please feel free to make comments too. Just for the record, the "husband" in question uses Proverbs 31:16-31 to say a wife is to financially support herself, children, and home. And he uses Genesis 3:17-19 to say that God only tells man to support himself. |

12 | "queen of heaven"? | Gen 1:1 | There | 23744
Does anyone know which false goddess was called the "queen of heaven" in Jeremiah 7:8 and chapter 44? I assume it was an Egyptian goddess??
13 | Are they the same spirit? | Gen 1:1 | There | 23808
Do you think the appartition (spirit) that claims to be the "queen of heaven" today, is the same false god as mentioned in Jeremiah? Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving too! :) |

14 | Did Moses have a second wife? | Exodus | There | 19818
Exodus 2 tells of Moses marriage to Zipporah. Does Numbers 12:1 speak of a second wife? Please provide scripture proofs if possible (I haven't been able to find any to confirm that the Ethiopian could be Zipporah), and any other references or information that could add light to this question.
15 | Why? | Exodus | There | 19902
Why do you guess that Zipporah was not living when Moses married the Egyptian woman? The opposite assumption could also be made since it does not say that Zipporah had died. One assumption would be as valid as the other. I'm not trying to contend with you, but only trying to gain insight. |

16 | Does the Bible teach that it is sin? | Exodus | There | 19944
This is a subject I hadn't thought about until recently when someone brought it up to me. Since God did not condemn David or Solomon nor any other Old Testament man for having more than one wife, where did the teaching come from that a man should only have one wife? And since God didn't condemn it then, is it actually wrong? Personally I'm a bit repulsed by the idea, but that may be because I have been taught that it IS wrong. I was told that a man in a muliple marriage can easily accept the NT verses where it says: "let the husband render to his wife..." "let each man have his own wife..." "the husband is head of the wife..." and even "the two shall become one flesh..." because it is talking about the relationship between TWO people, and the husband should be that to each of his wives individually. Further comments by all would be appreciated. |

17 | Sorry to keep asking the same question. | Exodus | There | 20011
I'm glad Steve that it convinces you... but it gives very little with which to impress others one way or the other. 1Corinthians 7:2 is basically saying that if you can't control yourself... get married. Both men and women. But that in itself is not teaching marriage to only one wife per say. Paul states also that it is even better to remain single if one can practice self-control. After reading your last post concerning monogamy being the "rule", and polygamy being the exception to the "rule", I did some checking in the OT and found that MANY, MANY men either had multiple wives and/or concubines. So it is very possible that polygamy was not the "exception", but rather, an option. My question still stands though. If polygamy is wrong, why didn't God condemn the practice, and/or at least speak out against it to those who practiced it? Such as Abraham, Jacob/Israel, many of his descendants including David, Solomon, etc. |

18 | Leadership within the church | Eph 4:11 | There | 26197
What does the Bible teach concerning the leadership of the church? Does it teach a structure from top to bottom of bishop, pastor, elders, little guy? And what is the job responsibilities for each "position"? I tried doing a search before asking this question, and found nothing. If there is something, please give me a clue as to what search words I should have used. It would be much appreciated. God bless. |
