1 | What went wrong? | 1 Sam 4:3 | EdB | 242865
Eli the chief priest had two sons that sinned and Eli turned a blind eye to their sin. Read the first 3 chapter of 1 Samuel and you will understand. Also note what God said and what man decided to do on their own. You will see the answer. |

2 | Whose glory is being sought? | 1 Sam 4:3 | Mommapbs | 242866
Greetings Ed, it seems to me that this is not so much about the sin of the priests as it is a judgement of God on His people. Please note that this decision was not reached by the priests, but rather the elders of Israel. The man of God (2:27) announced God's judgment against the house of Eli and his descendants (v. 30) which gives us this warning as well: 'I will honor those who honor Me but those who despise Me will be disgraced.' My original question is about the elders. How did their action dishonor the LORD? My thinking here is that the elders believed that by bringing God into the situation the outcome would change. It did not. I suspect that we may be guilty of the same misunderstanding. God is about His glory first. Might we also cloak our self-centered desires in a similar manner as these elders? Of course God wants me to be rich . . . think of all I could do for Him then. Whose glory are we really seeking? Thankfully, in the end, God is glorified when we finally lay to rest the idol of self.
3 | Whose glory is being sought? | 1 Sam 4:3 | EdB | 242867
I agree that the people's motives were wrong. Instead of seeking God using their own wisdom instead they came up with a plan. Much like Abraham and Sarah with Haggar. But also God's judgement fell on Eli and his two son through this. I suspect the sons played a part in the decision to run ahead of God. When the u righteous try to use righteousness for their gain the results are not good. How many today try to fool God expounding great soundings reasons for their desire when in fact they are after personal gain. |

4 | Whose glory is being sought? | 1 Sam 4:3 | Mommapbs | 242868
Ed, the reason this strikes a chord with me is because I have a dear friend who is angry and disappointed with/in God. Her daughter has suffered a great loss and my friend believes that God has treated her unfairly because her daughter has served Him faithfully over the years. We forget that our system of "justice" is often not God's! This misunderstanding may also contribute to bargaining with God too. I suspect we do this because we are blind to the other god we most often worship - self.
5 | Whose glory is being sought? | 1 Sam 4:3 | EdB | 242869
Remind your friend of Job who served God faithfully and lost everything. Of Moses who had to endure the abuse of the Israelites for 40 years. And of Joseph who was rejected by his family, sold as a slave, slandered, thrown in jail, forgotten. No one said this life is fair the promise of God is we who OVER COME will enjoy eternity in His presence. Never look at your physical life to judge God, look to His promises. He never lies. |
