Encourager: Here are a few Scripture references to burning of bodies (cremation), all of them from the Old Testament: Amos 2:1, 2 Kings 23:30, Joshua 7:25, Amos 6:9, and 1 Samuel 31:12. With the exception of one verse, Amos 2:1, cremation is mentioned without sanction or condemnation. In Amos 2:1 Moab incurs the wrath of God because he burned the bones of the king of Edom, thus desecrating the tomb of the dead and taking post mortem vengeance upon Edom's king. It would appear that in this instance God's condemnation fell on Moab not because of cremation per se but rather on account of the sin of hatred for Edom that led to Moab's heinous act. Since this verse is the only verse in the Bible that links cremation to God's wrath, and in view of the unusual circumstances involved in this one incident, it would be a stretch indeed to conclude from this verse alone that cremation under all conditions and circumstances is condemned. ....
