2 | Why wasn't David given the hot bread? | 1 Sam 21:6 | Searcher56 | 42638
Makarios "Showbread" is in the Amplified and other versions ... I gather from the passage "hot bread" replaced the "showbread" at a certain time. The "showbread" was days old bread ... "hot bread" was fresh, I think. Searcher |

3 | Why wasn't David given the hot bread? | 1 Sam 21:6 | Makarios | 42767
Greetings Searcher! The Amplified designation in this verse between "showbread" and "hot bread" is quite interesting.. I've noticed that the KJV, ASV, NIV and NKJV all include this distinction, as the Amplified does. However, that distinction led me on a little study of my own, beginning in Leviticus 24:5-9.. More dynamically equivalent translations help to explain 1 Samuel 21:6 a little more thoroughly.. (CEV) The only bread the priest had was the sacred bread that he had taken from the place of worship after putting out the fresh loaves. So he gave it to David. (GNB) So the priest gave David the sacred bread, because the only bread he had was the loaves offered to God, which had been removed from the sacred table and replaced by fresh bread. (GW) So the priest gave him holy bread because he only had the bread of the presence which had been taken from the LORD'S presence and replaced with warm bread that day. I thought that this distinction was interesting, as well as this commentary... "21:5,6 bread ... common. Since that bread was no longer on the Lord's table, having been replaced by hot bread, it was to be eaten by the priests and in these exigencies, by David under the law of necessity and mercy. See note on 21:4(*). The removal of the old bread and the replacing with new was done on the Sabbath (Lev. 24:8)." (1) "21:4 holy bread. Consecrated bread was set apart for use in the tabernacle to be eaten only by the priests (Ex. 25:30; Lev. 24:5-9). Ahimelech sought the Lord and received approval (1 Sam. 22:10) when he recognized that his spiritual obligation to preserve David's life superseded the ceremonial regulation concerning who could eat the consecrated bread (see Matt. 12:3,4; Mark 2:25,26).." (1) So after finishing this study, I read what you have posted, and you are quite correct! The "showbread" was that which was left out for days, while the "hot bread" was that which was fresh. Interesting study! Blessings to you, Makarios (1) MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word Publishing, John MacArthur, Author and General Editor |
