1 | How can an evil spirit from God be? | 1 Sam 16:14 | Ichabod | 216486 | ||
In 1 Samuel 16:14-15 it says (NASB), "Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him. Saul's servants then said to him, "Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you." I do not understand how God put an evil spirit in/on a man. This does not seem to fit the rest of scripture. I have researched this in Hebrew and literal translations and have found not clear answer. Can you explain it to me? Thank you, Bob |

Dear Ichabod, Welcome to the forum! Our God is sovereign. Every created thing, right down to the tiniest of particles, are under His control to fulfill His eternal purpose. This is not the only passage (1 Samuel 16:14-15) that makes mention of this sort of thing. See 1 Kings 22:20-23 (cf 2 Chronicles 18:19-22); Ezekiel 14:9; Job 2:6; 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. See also 1 Corinthians 5:5 and 1 Timothy 1:20. Your discomfort arises, Bob, because you seek to deduce God's nature by judging His actions. That may seem to make sense, but it will always yield error. We look at God's actions only in the light of His nature -- and His nature is perfectly wise, good, holy, loving, and righteous. In Him, Doc |
