2 | How could Obed be Naomi's son? | Ruth 4:17 | Makarios | 12244 | ||
Greetings Steve, Aged Naomi could no longer bear children, but she obtains an heir in place of Mahlon through Ruth. Ruth bore Obed (whose name means "servant," in its full form possibly "servant of the LORD."). "Here is the only place in the OT where a child was named by someone other than the immediate family. ... Ruth vicariously bore the son that would restore the family name of Naomi's deceased son Mahlon (4:1). ... Boaz and Ruth were the great-grandparents of David." (MacArthur Study Bible) So in this way, Naomi has a son since this would be the son to restore the family name of Naomi. The book of Ruth begins (1:1-5) with Naomi surviving the death of her husband and sons, and Obed would be the new 'carrier' or 'continuance' of the family name down to the next generation, which was his son Jesse, and then to David, who would become King over all Israel- and ultimately, to Jesus Christ! --Nolan |
