1 | Does God Give Signs? | Judg 6:36 | ivory | 105948 | ||
Please read Judges 6:36-40 I know that this is OT, but as Christians today, can we be as bold as Gideon and ask God for signs? Or does the Holy Spirit take the place of the "signs" given back then, since we are to use the Holy Spirit to guide us? |

Not the usual way to find God's will "Gideon was not here seeking to learn God's will, because that had already been clearly revealed to him (vv. 14,16). He put out the fleece for two reasons: (1) to strengthen the weakness of his own faith; and (2) to give him evidence that would convince the people that he was really God's instrument. This is not to be taken as the usual method for discovering God's will. See Prov. 3:5-6; Jas. 1:5-8" (Note at Judges 6:37, New Scofield Reference Bible, Oxford, 1967). NASB Judges 6:37 behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken." |

It's good you referenced Jas. 1:5-8. Is one being doubleminded if you already know God's will but you want a deeper confirmation as Gideon did with "putting out the fleece"? I know in Habbakuk 2:1-3 about waiting on the vision, but in that "meantime", while waiting, you begin to doubt and grow weary.. |

I would not want to judge the mind or heart of one who wanted a deeper confirmation, as Gideon did. However, regarding seeking signs, the Scriptures tell us: AMPLIFIED Matthew 16:4 A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away. [Jonah 3:4, 5.] 1 Cor. 1:21-24 (ESV) For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. [22] For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, [23] but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, [24] but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. |
