Lionstrong, You are onto something here. Let me quote a passage from one of my favorite books(unfortunately out of print) in which the authors touch briefly on certain aspects of the Book of Judges. "But why employ irony, why invite disgust when describing the heroes of Judges? The author's attitude toward them is surely not the attitude he has takes towards God's repeated deliverance of his people. This repeated deliverance would indeed be the cause of joy and exhultation. But this is only half the story--and the response of the reader is tied to the other half. Embarrasment, revulsion, disgust. God might well have been saving the sinful Israelites, but he was sending them exactly the kind of judges they deserved, judges who embodied the Hebrew's own weakness and perversity...Samson fits the pattern of a champion of a people unworthy of their God--a champion strong but stupid, willful, lustful, unclean..."
