1 | Sabbath to Sunday Worship? | NT general | justme | 242689 | ||
In the New Testament it appears that Sabbath Worship was always the day of Worship. When, where, what, and who made the change from Saturday to Sunday for worship? I know the reason we say we worship on Sunday, but under what authority was the change made? |

Hi, Justme... The primitive church adopted this practice under the auspices of the Apostles. We have solidly received this to the present day in our orthopraxy. The Scriptures themselves give us indirect references as to why. For example, I find Hebrews 4 to do just that. For further study, you might find the 22 chapter of the 1689 London Baptist Confession helpful. The following link also gives Scriptural references: http://www.vor.org/truth/1689/1689bc22.html In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc. Two questions. I was signed in and could not post a thing, even though I could not post to this answer you gave me. I had to sign even with it saying I was. I can't understand that. Now the second question. and I am really dialoging with a person on the issue of Sabbath Worship, so that's why I am asking all this. No where was any of the 10 commandments removed, and no where in the NT was Sabbath Worship stopped. So which Apostles say Sunday Worship was to be the new way? Does man have the right to change Worship days? These are serious questions my friens is asking, and I am unsure how to answer. Thanks for your help. justme |

Hi, Justme... In the absence of anything to the contrary, either Scriptural or even apocryphal, an appropriate answer would be: all of them. See Ephesians 2:19-22. The church was built on the kerygma (the teachings of Christ and the Apostles). We would be in grievous error to assume that there were contradictory views handed down to His church (see Ephesians 4:7-14). The Judaizers of Paul's time continued to plague the church -- despite the explicit instruction in Galatians and Hebrews. This issue became such a problem that in 364 AD a council was convened in Phrygia Pacatiana, called the Council of Laodicea. Article 29 states the following: "Christians must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the Lord's Day; and, if they can, resting then as Christians. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ." Throughout the Reformation this was affirmed with the same language of Sunday as being the "Lord's Day." You can also read similar affirmations by the old divines in the Heidelberg Catechism, the Synod of Dort, the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Savoy Declaration, etc. Various commentators also affirm this, often citing early church fathers (e.g., John Calvin, John Gill, Robert Jamieson, etc.). Good morning Justme, It was not until after Jesus death that the law covenant was taken away. As we see this at colossians 2:13,14. More specifically Jesus fulfilled the law, colossians 2:16,17 and romans 10:4. Afterward the law of christ came into effect, galatians 6:2. So how are we to know whether the sabbath was included in this fulfillment??? After Paul states, we have been discharched from the law, he went on to refer to one of the ten commandments specifically. We see this at romans 7:6,7. Of course, the sabbath is one of many included in the law. |
