1 | Matt 5.29 (for eg) vs grace? | NT general | Susan000 | 231905 | ||
If Jesus came to save us by grace because we can't be good enough, why then did he say things like "better to gouge out your eye if it causes you to lust than be cast into the lake of fire"? (Matt 5.29) This implies that I am expected not to sin, no matter how hard it may be for me. But we all do sin. So why does he say that will get us cast into hell, if he came to save us from hell??? I'm angry and confused. |

The type of language Jesus was using here is known as hyperbole, which is an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally,ie."to wait an eternity". I googled "hyperbole" for this definition. John 6:53-60 is another example of Jesus using hyperbole in scripture.I hope this will be of use to you. God Bless. |

I'm not sure there is a quoteable source. A figure of speech is a figure of speech. Sentence structure, words used, context, understood meaning, rules of grammar and many other factors usually combine to lead us to the such conclusions. To fully understand this perhaps you need to understand what a figure of speech Hyperbole. to do that do a search on GOOGLE for hyperbole and read the definitiona and examples given. Not many commentators comment on a hyperbole when they are obvious most assume the reader has already figured that out for the themselves based on the commonly held rules of grammar. |
