Dear Bob, Determining cause in Scripture can be a funny thing. In our modern thinking we prefer simple answers. What, where, when, who, and how are often easier questions to answer than why -- and cause is right in the middle of the why question. For example, we can ask what World War Two was, where it took place, when it took place, and who were involved. The question of what caused the war is hotly debated. A debate that will probably never end. Any of the answers could be the right one, but more likely they are all correct to one degree or another. We understand that the question is incredibly complex. If you do a little reading on the classical understanding of causality, you will find that we speak of cause in four broad categories: material cause, formal cause, efficient/instrumental cause, and final cause. We could go through these one by one, relative to the cause of Christ's death. However, when I do that sort of thing, people start complaining about my lack of perspicuity. So I will leave it up to you to ferret through all the answers you've been given and categorize them accordingly... or not. :-) In Him, Doc PS We only sound like we are lecturing because of the nature of biblical studies, and the nature of textual communication. Please don't be quick to judge us until you have spent a while in our company. You may find our faults to be much different from the ones you thought you immediately perceived. |
