Hebrews 2:14,15 "Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,(15) and might free thosewho through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives." C. Gordon Olson in his book GETTING THE GOSPEL RIGHT published by Global Gospel Publishers 2005 Olson says on page 29, "Even the power of death was delegated to Satan. Obviously God's exercise of His sovereignty has been limited thereby. God retains the ultimate sovereignty but has allowed Satan and fallen man to do their own thing in opposition to Him." After looking as several commentaries I am confused. Did or does Satan have the power of death? If Satan has the power of death then how does this fit with Psalm 139:16 where it states our days have been written in a book before we were even born, and our days are ordained by God? justme |

Hi, justme... I don't know about the rightness of Olson's definition of the gospel, but his theology misses the mark. Read about what the old divines called "secondary causes." See posts #151282, #166824, and #198348. "How frequently God’s saints see only Satan as the cause of their troubles. They regard the great enemy as responsible for much of their sufferings. But there is no comfort for the heart in this. We do not deny that the Devil does bring about much that harasses us. But above Satan is the Lord Almighty! The Devil cannot touch a hair of our heads without God’s permission, and when he is allowed to disturb and distract us, even then it is only God using him to 'try' us. Let us learn then, to look beyond all secondary causes and instruments to that One who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will (Ephesians 1:11). This is what Job did." --A. W.
