In the sight of God, is what we call a "white" lie ok? Is the intent of our heart the justification to tell a lie? E.g. "you look fantastic" when inside you think your best friend is less than normally attractive or they've put on a lot of weight. Rehab told a lie and she and her family were blessed because she recognizes God's Position behind the Israelite s in Joshua 2. Abraham lied (by deceit)Genesis 12:19, and Gen.20:2 And justifies his actions in Gen.20:12 He sets the example for Isaac Gen.26:7 and Isaac is blessed in vs 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him. Human law does not allow for the intent of the heart. E.g. "he robbed the bank to feed his children" or "She stole the pampers because she had no money". God does not categorize sin into 1. Infraction "ticket", 2. little sin "misdemeanor", 3. major Sin "felony". The biblical references for Bearing false witness compared to telling a lie is clear. This, to me, is clear in both the ten commandments exodus 20:16 Deut. 5:20, and in psalm 6:19. However in defining these positions above, "a lie is a lie and a sin is a sin" Traditionally we tell our children that lying is bad. We tell our children to tell the boss we are not home because we want to stay home and work on something. We always give mixed messages. The NT clearly mentions lies. In your answer, please consider: Acts 5:3 NKJV. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? Colossians 3:9 NKJV Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deed Romans 3:7 NKJV For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 1 John 2:21 NKJV I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Revelation 22:15 NKJV But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. More than one response is encouraged My primary bible is the NKJV. I like to parallel with the NIV because of the rendering differences. I love to use this sight, www.biblestudytools.com. |

The New Testament stresses it is not the letter of the law but rather the intent of the heart that is looked at by God. We can get ourselves tied up in legalism that will literally choke the life out of our being. Telling a lie to preserve the feelings of another, says the intent was not to deceive but rather to build up and I don't think God will fault you on that. So it is the intent that is judged not the act itself. Human law does not allow for intent as you said because as humans we can't look at the heart. However God can and knows the intent of the heart which enables God to judge by intent not by action or event. I think we miss it when tell our kids not to lie. We should teach them not to deceive, not to give false witness, not to cheat. That is the really the problem. Tell someone they look good to build them up is doing to others what you would have them do unto you. How far you carry this will depend on our integrity. Some will say you look good. Others will say you sure look better than you did the last time I saw you. Others will say that is a nice hat, or an interesting walk you have. :-) |

So true and right on point. I believe that the legalistic person has to do what is impossible for most. Look inside ourselves. One who would shackle another without giving the Good News according to scripture, is really condemning themselves. A person who struggles but with a contrite heart to overcome their sin and who goes before God with a true and humble heart, is better than the pharisee (see Luke 18:11) Some ask why the world is so judgmental towards Christians. I would ask "if one would stand a better chance if we took a better understanding of Matthew 7:1,2 ASV. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you. I understand that we judge the actions by (God's word) of those committing the act and not the heart of the person. I pray that as I speak to those who are still in sin that it is Jesus, the Gospel and His righteousness I focus on, remembering were my heart was the day before I turned to Christ. Thanks for your response continue if you please. |
