Beja, I looked in Wikapedia for both antinomianism and nomianism and didn't come up with anything BUT Wikapedia offered the following Novatianism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The Novatianists were early Christians following Antipope Novatian, held a strict view that refused readmission to communion of Lapsi, those baptized Christians who had denied their faith or performed the formalities of a ritual sacrifice to the pagan gods, under the pressures of the persecution sanctioned by Emperor Decius, in AD 250. They were declared heretical. Novatian Main article: Novatian Novatian was a Roman priest who in 251 opposed the election of Pope Cornelius, following the assassination of Pope Fabian during the persecution, on the grounds that he was too lax in accepting the lapsed Christians. He let himself be made a rival pope, one of the first antipopes. He held that lapsed Christians, who had not maintained their confession of faith under persecution, may not be received again into communion with the church, and that second marriages are unlawful. He and his followers were excommunicated by a synod held at Rome in October of the same year. Novatian is said to have suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Valerian I, 253-260 AD. Novatianism after Novatian After his death, the Novatianist sect spread rapidly, were found in every province, and in some places were very numerous. Those who allied themselves with the doctrines of Novatian were called Novatianists; their own name for themselves was the ("katharoi"), or Puritans, reflecting their claim not to be participants in the lax practices of the Catholics by which they believed the Catholic Church to have been corrupted. They went so far as to rebaptize their converts. Novatianists (including Novatian) were labelled by Rome as schismatics in not submitting to the bishop of Rome, and were by Rome labelled heretics in denying that the Church has the power to grant absolution in certain cases (such as to the Lapsi—those who had renounced their Christianity under persecution but later wanted to return to the church). Beyond that, their practices were the same as that of the Catholic Church in almost everything, including monasticism in the fourth century. End of Quote. Is this that to which you're referring? I've never heard of the word as you reference. Just looking for clarification. God bless, Inquisitor |

Inquisitor, Antinomianism is the error in which Christians take the truth of God's grace and bring it to a wrong conclusion. The truth is that we are no longer "under the law" but rather "under grace." The problem is a missunderstanding of what this means. What it rightly means is that once Christ has died for our sins and given us His righteousness the Law has no more ability to condem us. What they wrongly conclude is that since we are not "under Law" therefore that means none of the Old Testament morality rules apply to us anymore. In other words, a Christian can rightly say that, "Thou shall not steal" can no longer condemn me before God because Christ has died for me, but though it can not condemn me I still am to follow that command. An Antinomian would say that the command, "Thou shall not steal" no longer even applies to me because I am not under the Law. Therefore grace becomes a license to sin. That's me trying to explain it myself, Doc probably has a two sentence quote from some mighty saint of the past that captures it perfectly where I failed in a few paragraphs! In Christ, Beja |

Thanks, Beja. Appreciate the quick response. Looking forward to an objective source from the internet or a commentary. As you mentioned, Doc will most likely have some information for us. God bless you both, Inquisitor |
