Good morning Grace, shalom, These people were not selling things for the furtherance of God's Kingdom. The Temple had its own currency standard, its own farms for breeding the sacrifice animals as well. When the people would come from all over the known world for the pilgrimage feasts these money-changers went to work. They would exchange all currencies for the Temple shekel and would make large profits for themselves at the expense of their brethren (usually the very poor). By the time of Jesus, most of the sacrifice animals were also purchased through the temple as well and this just afforded the money-changers and lenders another way to cheat their own people. This practice was against Torah and infuriated Jesus. Is selling hot dogs and applebutter, etc. a good thing? I'll leave that up to the Holy Spirit - but it doesn't equate to what the money-changers were doing. |
