I have not read too much of the Bible for about twenty years. I did study it in school, and have some memory of the stories and teaching of Jesus as well as some old testament stories. I feel very strongly that I need to read and study Jesus teaching. I do not have a single Christian friend to help guide my study and it is completely overwhelming me. Does anybody here have a suggestion of where I should start reading and how to understand it? Usually I just open the book to anywhere and read a little, but I need to actually study it somehow. Maybe there are lessons somewhere online that I can be directed to? I just found this board this evening and it is a very strange format for me so forgive me if this is not an appropriate type of question for this board. Thanks for any helpful suggestions. |

Dear Mary, Welcome to the forum. I am glad for your desire to study the Bible deligently. We have to labour and dig for this precious treasure - God's Word. From what I have read of your post, I would offer you a golden rule : never read a bible verse. We have to get the proper and correct meaning of the scripture based on the context. It is dangerous to just read a verse or two, draw our own conclusion and apply it to our circumstances. I strongly recommend you the book "How to read the Bible for all its worth" - by Fee N Stuart. Another book commendable is: How to study your Bible - by Kay Arthur. She has a website : Precept.org offering programmes for inductive Bible study. See posts (by our brother Doc) : 156695, 156918, 156920, 156917, 157835, 158836, 202827, 171562 It seems that you have not allied yourself with any local church. I hope you will find a Bible teaching church that holds to sola scriptura (i.e. scripture alone) stand that you may be edified. If possible, you may provide the location where you are (don't give full address for security sake) so that members of the forum might help you to get one from your area of proximity. May you be blessed. Shalom Azure |

Thank you very much for responding. I will see if my local library offers either of the books you recomend. I will visit the website that you mentioned and try to find the posts you recomend by brother Doc. I can't go to a physical church, my husband would not like that. God in a strange way has told me to not anger my husband or disturb the peace of my home by forcing the issue. I am just supposed to study the Bible and I know God will get me in touch with the right people to help me, one step at a time. | ||||||
