This question has something to do with the commnetary on "An Angel Appears to Jesus." 1/1/06 ...It is the thoughtful, not the thinking whom God will guide. Isn't this contradictory to Christ's going after the lost sheep? |

Dear Roslyn, I'm not sure exactly to which commentary you are referring. I have one or two ideas, though, what it might be addressing. Zacharias and Mary in their angelic visitations both asked a question immediately after the angel recited the pronouncement of impending births. Their questions were quite similar: "How?" However, the question of Mary was more graciously received than that of Zacharias. There is much to discuss when contrasting these questions. But one might properly conclude that Mary's question was a more thoughtful one than was Zacharias question. Arguably, God never bypasses the mind in the process of drawing His own to Himself. Note that the Scripture is quite clear that the Holy Spirit illumines the Word of God (Ephesians 3:9-10). The words of the Scripture must normally come through some sort of communication: either spoken or read (Romans 10:17). It is then that the Holy Spirit begins to move on a person's heart. (cf Acts 2:37; Romans 10:14) Consequently, Christianity emphasizes the need to hear (Mark 4:9), study (2 Timothy 2:14), learn (Mark 11:29), think (Philippians 4:8), meditate (1 Timothy 4:15), reason (Isaiah 1:18), etc. We don't demean the operation of the mind as do some of the Eastern religions. In spite of our critics word to the contrary, neither do we hang everything on "blind faith." Ours is a faith of historic facts and testimony. On the other hand, we are NOT promoting intellectualism. There is a very significant difference between promoting the use of the intellect and promoting intellectualism. Furthermore, we do not believe that the truth of God can be arrived at entirely through the effort of the mind. Scripture clearly teaches that an inward transformation must occur before we can understand (cf John 8:43; 1 Corinthians 2:14) I hope this helps with your question. I apologize for not being able to answer it more directly. In Him, Doc |
