There is a Jewish custom that celebrate the child coming of age. It is called the Bar mitzvah or "rite of passage," a crossover from childhood to adulthood; a milestone in a Jew's life. Judaism deems a boy a "bar mitzvah" when he turns 13 and a girl becomes "bat mitzvah" when she turns 12. At that point the child, who is no longer a child in the eyes of Jewish law becomes responsible for his own deeds, spiritually, ethically, and morally. |

Hi, Shlomoh... The bat mitzvah grew out of the Jewish Reformed movement. I'd posit, therefore, that it would have little bearing on our interpretation of Biblical truths. The bar mitzvah is an aliyah, confering the obligation of a child to obey the commandments. This occurs at 13 even if the ceremony does not take place. Consequently, it implies an age of accountability. What is more significant, though, is that Jews believe that parents are accountable for the sins of their children before the age of 13. That is why at the bar mitzvah, the father recites a "release from punishment" as part of that ceremony. Which raises an interesting question. If we are to embrace the idea of an age of accountability, are we also to embrace the notion that parents are held accountability for the sins of their children? In Him, Doc |

4 | Age for baptism? | Bible general Archive 3 | SBoone | 157427
Hello Doc, Is there Biblical reference to 12 and 13 for Bar Mitzvah? My question is in regard to Baptism. Christ was baptized at the age of 27, but many Christian children are getting baptized at 8, 9, or 10. Would 12 or 13 be a good mark to say that a child who has not reached this age would not be baptized? God Bless, SBoone |

5 | Age for baptism? | Bible general Archive 3 | DocTrinsograce | 157430
Dear Boone, Well, no, not really. It is mentioned in the Talmud: Mishnah Niddah 5:6 states that when a vow is made by someone thirteen or above, it is a valid vow. It also says, "At age thirteen one becomes subject to the commandments" (Avot 5:21). Of course, I'd take all of this with a rather large grain of kosher salt. :-) I rather think that marking time is a human penchant and has value in jurisprudence, but has questionable value in theology. As a credo-baptist I'd discourage anyone from seeking baptism who was not saved, or who failed to understand the significance of the act. Anything beyond this, frankly, sounds a bit legalistic to me.
