I would like to take a moment to thank Doc. Out of everyone who had answered my question on "What is a demon?" , Doc came up with the best answer. I also thank him for his reference to the "Systematic Thology by Dr. Wayne Grudem." I actually have "The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible." Another book I have is "Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. by W.E. Vine, Merrill F. Unger, William White Jr." Eventually I used my Vine's to find an answer to "What is a Demon?" I didn't look at what Doc had said. But these two really helped me a lot. The full question was "Is a demon a being that keeps you from getting what you want?" Someone had mentioned that if what you want is God, then a demon prevents you from getting what you want. I think I have had a philosophical problem. In my last question I tried to elaborate on this problem. The person that is teaching my "Religion of the World" class is a Jaine. She has roots in India. India is actually big on Hinduism. There are other religions in India. Jaine is a religion. Another word for Atheist. Other religions that live in India are Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. Hinduism looks at them as different paths leading to the same "God." As Christians we recognize only one path. That is the path through salvation. Islam and Judaism are a lot closer to Christianity than Hinduism. As a matter of fact, Hinduism and Christianity are a far cry from eachother. Hinduism is polytheisitic (they have many gods). Christianity is Monotheistic (one God). There is no salvation in Hinduism. Hindu's believe in reincarnation. ONe big question in Hinduism , which is also a philosophy is "What do people want?" What we think we want is different from what we truly want. |

Hi, Lon... All human religions are about man's effort to make himself suitable to the divine. In other words, they involve the necessary steps by which men reach "heaven," however that might be defined. This is called "autosoterism" (see post #173908). Christianity is really the opposite. It clearly asserts that sin is so heinous that Adam's single act of disobedience condemned all of his descendants. There is nothing anyone can do to commend themselves to so holy a God. Therefore, the only solution is for God to very specifically and assuredly accomplish the redemption of His own. In Him, Doc |
