Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I am wondering what is your very favorite Bible for quality as well as usefulness, i.e. - thumb index for fast reference - excellent quality leather cover - stitched binding for long wear - font size for readability - extra features, etc? I am looking for the best quality bible that will be my treasure for my days on earth and that I can pass on to my daughter. I prefer the NKJV but I am open to other versions as well. God Bless |

Dear "Taur" -- You indicated that you prefer the New King James Version in a translation. Nelson has the rights on that one and in my experience Nelson makes crummy stuff when it comes to printing and bindng of their Bibles. The pages are slapped together with glue, not stitched, and they tend to come apart in chunks after a fairly short period of use. I speak from personal experience. Oxford University Press offers a good quality genuine leather edition of the Scofield in the NKJV that you might wish to look at. ...... In my estimation the New American Standard Bible (NASB), 1995 Update, is among the very finest of translations of the Scriptures in modern English that is available today. What's more, the best quality printing and binding that I've seen in any Bible at any price is the NASB single-column reference edition covered in butter-soft calfskin leather (in black or burgundy) with Smythe-sewn binding. The print is clear and bold and set in an 11-point type font that makes it easy on the eyes. The paper is of exceptional quality with no annoying "bleed through" of the pages. It has thousands of side references and copious translators' notes, along with a good-sized concordance in the back of the volume. Beautiful to look at and a pleasure to hold in one's hand, this sturdy Bible is published by Foundation, which is a not-for-profit publisher owned by the Lockman Foundation. You can expect to pay a hundred dollars or more for this Bible, but it is worth every penny! You can order a copy from American Bible Sales which can be accessed from this web site. I am not an employee of Lockman, by the way; but I do recommend this Bible. And yes, I own one of them myself and it has become my favorite of all the others on my bookshelf ! --Hank | ||||||

Hank: I have this very same Bible. I agree the leather is soft and the quality of the paper and printing is the best quality I have ever seen. But, the cover on my Bible was put on off center, and one side has one fourth of an inch more over lap than the otherside. Also the printing on the back is not even close to being centered. I called Foundation, and was told these Bibles are as close to hand made as possible, and every Bible is looked at very carefully. They said they could do nothing! Even the Lemstone Book store manager agreed this was not what a onehundred fifty dollar Bible should look light. The store owner had ordered a thinline calif skin Bible from Foundation for someone, and when it came in the leather was soft and the brand was still on the front of the Bible. She sent it back. I have never spent this much for a Bible. I always buy leather Bibles, and most generally Bible publishers warranty their Bibles for a good lenght of time. Zondervan warranties their leather Bibles for lifetime, and they replaced for me a Life Application Study Bible NASB, and told me to give the old one to someone who needed one. I was very pleased. However I would never buy another Foundation Bible, as they do not stand behind the quality when it is poor workmanship. I use the Bible, but not near as often, the situation was unpleasent, and when I use it it bothers me to remember this experience. This brings me to a question when we as Christians run into the kind of situation such as the one I just told you about, what is the better way to resolve issues when the business is a world leader in the Bible production? I would really like to know, as this has been a thorn in my side. Justme |
