Hi, Luthern... Very good question! One which we should be frequently reminded. Unfortunately, in our day, catechisms, creeds, and confessions are frowned upon by most modern churches who would rather get their theology on a T-shirt or a bumper sticker. Sad, isn't it? If you and I could travel back in time, we could have asked the average Puritan child that question. Even at the age of eight, they would have been able to instantly give us the correct Biblical answer, along with the verses on which it was based. However, they would have worded things a little differently. The question would have been, "What is the chief aim of man?' In modern parlance we would say, "What is man's primary purpose?" Better yet, like you stated it, "For what purpose was man created?" Although the latter implies something passive, while the former implies something that we must be doing. The quick answer from the Puritan child would have been: "Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. First Corinthians 10:31 and Psalm 73:25 and 26." The child would then have obligingly quoted the verses, thusly, from the Geneva Bible: "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." and "Whom have I in heaven but Thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever." Of course, we find this theme throughout the Bible. It is, I think, especially well described in Ephesians. In Him, Doc PS That Puritan child would probably have gone on to ask us, "Good morrow, gentle sirs. Prithee whence comest thou? Hail thee from heathen lands where the fathers teachest not their children the Word of God?" :-) |
