Hi, Searcher! Thanks for the info! I was simply wondering, due to the recent exchange... justme trusted on another person's words; only to be shocked by the findings... since I noticed that the individual continued to post the website in question, I wondered if there could not be a way to either block the address or remove the post from both general list and the restricted list... And, since justme mentioned that the problem was reported, Hank clarified that it was a taxing task to perform (not all systems have access to the same tools), and Lockman has restricted the thread... there's not much else to do... Angel, picking up on your observation pertaining to errant posts and errant posters (those Forum users who do not choose to comply with stated Forum guidelines): You wrote, "there's not much else to do." Oh, but there is! Renegade users are dealt with by either (a) a warning letter from the Lockman Foundation or (b) immediate revocation of their privilege to post to Study Bible Forum, depending on the nature and severity of the abuse of user guidelines. Please be assured that users who persist in violating Forum guidelines will be dealt with firmly. I cannot over-emphasize how important it is for every user in good standing who values the Forum and wants to see it conducted the way it was designed to be conducted to report abuse of those users who refuse to follow stated Forum guidelines. Hi, Hank! My comment was in regards to the material already posted... though I did not check the site, it is my understanding that justme did and was shocked by its content... From several past exchanges, I understood that the Forum does sanctions/terminates habitual abusers... still, it would be nice to not only restrict abusive posts but to also remove/block out text that is offensive or that offers links to offensive sites... God Bless! Angel |

Thanks for responding, Mr. and I emphasize Mr., Angel :-) I quite agree with you that it would be helpful to be able to eradicate grossly offensive posts quickly, or better still, to pre-empt and dispose of them before they ever appeared on the pages of the Forum in the first place. The first option involves the installation of sophisticated software and the re-writing of complicated programs of which I know next to nothing and do not presume to understand. The second option involves flesh-and-blood full-time moderators. Both are expensive and neither guarantees a perfect, smooth-running Forum. The Lockman Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that makes it fiscal way in the world by sales of Bibles and by gifts from supporters of its mission, which has always been chiefly the translation and distribution of Bibles. ..... There was a time when I felt that this Forum should have a live moderator (or moderators), but having thought the matter over carefully I now am convinced that there are at least as many talking points in favor of not having a moderator as there are for having one. For example, how likely is it to be able to find a moderator who was totally unbiased, knew Scripture thoroughly, and was absolutely reasonable and fair in all his decisions? And on the matter of having the ready capability to erase a post: Lockman has this capability, as I've stated before, and has used it very sparingly for two reasons: (1) The process under the existing system is painstakingly cumbersome and time-consuming and (2) in the four-year history of the Forum, the occasion to use it has arisen extremely rarely. ..... My conclusion: Given that Lockman's chief raison d'etre is the translation and and distribution of God's word, and given that Lockman is a not-for-profit organization and does not have unlimited financial resources, I'd much prefer that they continue with their main mission of translating and putting Bibles in the hands of spiritually hungry people across the world, using their financial resources chiefly in this endeavor, than to dump more funds into questionable schemes in the hope of streamlining Study Bible Forum. The majority of users of this Forum are responsible adults and dedicated Christians. We can help ourselves and improve the quality and usefulness of this Forum at the same time by shouldering our responsibility to abide by clear Forum guidelines ourselves and report offenders who do not. Lockman through the years has been highly responsive to requests by "law-abiding" users to deal with abusers. No matter how much sophisticated equipment is installed and no matter how many moderators are employed, this Forum will never rise above the level of the quality of the people who use it. Not many of us are geniuses and not any of us knows everything about God's word, but all of us can be kind and loving toward one another on this Forum, all of us can be honest in all we say and do, and all of us can take the clear guidelines seriously and abide by them. And I saved the most important thing for last. All Christians on this Forum can pray for one another and pray that God will use StudyBibleForum.com to his eternal glory. --Hank | ||||||

Hi, Hank! I agree with you totally! There's a limit to what man can do (given authority and power) without getting caught up in that biased business... and, complete automation would require extensive and expensive equiptment/programs that do not always work as prescribed (there are some currently in use where a constant response (a or b) is given no matter how the query is composed... even googles and others have their crunching errors and supply everything but the correct response to the search!); that is why I said that it would be nice to have the capacity to remove/block offensive text... As it is this forum has a great variaty of people (age, experience, religious affiliations...) and it is more homogenous than many special interest forums that I've experienced... Like you my computer skills are minimum... had I the knowledge I would offer to create and install a program that would block out text or remove posts that the general members would deem offensive--this I would do free of charge, of course... But as you noted, as long as the general populace continues to curb and educate the few whose agenda is to violate the forum's guidelines or to expound their anti-Christian rhetoric we will continue to have an excellent Christian Forum! Finally, I must concurr with you, our prayers will do more than all the monitoring (automated or otherwise) in the world! If we continuously invit the Holy Spirit to guide and protect the forum and its members, the Hand of God will accomplish all things! God Bless! Angel |
